A group of teens and adults from the Diocese of Missouri went on a weekend
mission trip to Joplin in July to help with tornado recovery efforts. Five mem-
bers from St. Martins joined the mission. Steve Gillies shares some of his ex-
perience with us here. For more of Steves story and pictures from the mis-
sion trip, please visit our website at www.stmartinschurch.org.

Reflections from Joplin

When Heidi Gioia made the

to discuss Major Pettigrew's
Last Stand: A Novel by Helen
Simonson. Newcomers are al-

discussion.
From Publishers WeeklyIn her charming debut novel,
Simonson tells the tale of Maj.
Ernest Pettigrew, an honor-bound
Englishman and widower, and the
very embodiment of duty and pride.
This is a vastly enjoyable traipse
through the English countryside and
the long-held traditions of the Brit-

Pastoral Care Lay Ministries combine efforts
P A G E 3S T M A R T I N S C H U R C H . O R G
Ministers can com-
bine forces with the
Eucharistic Visitors
that go from ourworship every Sun-
day for follow-up
visits that may or
may not include
taking Eucharist to
them. This means
that short term and
longer term visits can be achieved
by the same care team lay ministers.
Currently we are taking first steps
to develop and train lay ministers in
this new direction. For instance,
participants from the Pastoral Care
group have started a training proc-
ess towards being licensed by the
diocese to be Eucharistic Visitors.
There are two training dates sched-
uled which remain open to new-
comers who wish to share in this
ministry. The future dates are Au-
gust 17 and September 14
from 9 till 10:30 a.m. There will
be evening and/or weekend train-
ings forthcoming which will be an-
nounced via iMessages and
weekly bulletin updates.
You are also welcome to
attend the next PastoralCare Lay Ministries meet-
ing in September.
If you know of someone
with an upcoming surgery,

at home let us know how
we can be supportive. For more in-

Celebrating Creation: A fall weekend retreat for womenSt. Martins former Interim Associate Rector Susie Skinner
will be leading a weekend retreat this fall that promises to
feed your body, mind and soul.
Using the traditions of Celtic and Benedictine spirituality,
this retreat weekend will focus on celebrating creation and
the interrelatedness of every living thing to one another and
to God. Participants will have the opportunity to experience
what it is to pray while walking an outdoor labyrinth, watch-
ing a swan glide by on a glassy lake, listening to the sounds
of nature at eventide, baking bread or taking a prayer
walk among sculptures in the historic, picturesque town
of New Harmony, Indiana.
The retreat begins Friday, October 28 at 5 p.m. and con-
cludes Sunday, October 30 with noon Eucharist. The
cost is $200, which includes lodging, meals and materials.
A $100 non-refundable deposit is due by September 1.

form, go to http://test.confluencespirituality.org/category/

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
A new Pastoral Care Lay Ministries
team is forming! This ministry group
is designed to serve our parish by
visiting people who need pastoral
care for hospital stays, healing at
home, Eucharistic visits, and at
nursing homes. This group is open
for new ministers to join and oper-
ates under the supervision of the
clergy and lay leaders.
Aspects of this ministry have been
operating for some time and willcontinue to work with the clergy
and lay leadership to streamline the
efforts of several committees such
as our Eucharistic Visitors, The First
Responders, who provide meals,
and the Hospitality Committee, just
to name a few examples. These
various groups will continue work-
ing on their own much of the time,
but will also be in communication
with other ministries through the
Pastoral Care team.

creative thinker and dedicated colleague in
the diocese and believe she will fit into the
life of St. Martin's very well, says Fr. Jon
Hall. She brings many gifts as a priest and
congregational leader. I just want to support
her ministry with us any way I can so that
she can fly!
Emily was born in Richmond, VA as an
army brat, living in several states and Ger-
many while growing up. She moved to Mis-
souri to attend graduate school at Washing-
ton University, where she earned her PhD in
Medieval German Literature. She went on toattend Eden Theological Seminary in Web-
ster Groves and was ordained in 2007. After
becoming a priest, she served in two posi-
tions at one church: as an Assistant to the
Rector at Grace Episcopal Church in Kirk-
wood, and as the Vicar for the St. Thomas
Church for the Deaf (which shares Graces
facilities). Emily will continue to serve part-
time at St. Thomas, where she preaches and
celebrates the liturgy in Sign Language on
Sunday mornings.
Emily is married to Warren Davis, an Assis-
tant Dean in the College of Arts and Sci-
ences at Washington University. The couple
lives in Olivette and has three children: 19-
year old Sophia, 15-year old Alex, and 13-
year old Christian.
Emily is a cradle Episcopalian. Her mother,
The Rev. Kitty Hillquist, is also a priest, cur-
rently serving St. Pauls in Ironton and All
Saints in Farmington. Emily says she loves
the Episcopal Church because of the free-
dom to reason, to ask questions and to
come to things from different angles. You
can say the Creed every Sunday and believe
every part of it and have questions, she
explains. I love mysteries! And I love our
faith that seeks its fulfillment in delving ever
deeper into the mysteries without the need
to settle on one final answer.

Creating a Christian community for youthBy Heidi Gioia,
Director of Youth Ministries
August signals
back-to-school
time and the be-
ginning of our
new year of youth
ministries. Youth
group is different
from other teen
activities because
it is a Christian
community dedi-
cated to spiritual
growth and fel-
lowship, service
to others and the worship of
God. So this year, our youth
group gatherings will place a spe-
cial focus on imaginingand then
practicingwhat a vibrant Christian
community looks like. Yes, well
still play crazy games and takesocial outings together, but well
also share meals together and
have small group discussions
about how the Good News in-
forms how we relate to each
other. Well look at communities
in the Bible and then examine real
life issues that face us today, con-
sidering how to live out our faith.
Please join us for an exciting year
of growing closer to God and
each other.

On any given day, an average of 38,000
units of red blood cells are needed for hos-
pital patients in the United States.
One in 10 people entering a hospital needs
blood.
In the United States, someone needs a
blood transfusion about every two seconds.
There is no substitute for human blood. It
cannot be manufactured.
The average body has 10 to 12 pints of
blood.

Our last Blood Drive was so successful that the Red Cross asked St. Martins to hold another one.
St. Martins will host a BLOOD DRIVE administered by the American Red Cross on Tuesday, Au-
gust 23 from 3 to 7 p.m. Anyone 17 or older is eligible to donate. Times for donating begin at 3
p.m. and end at 6:45 p.m.
You may sign up in Park Hall or online at redcrossblood.org. Use the sponsor code stmartins.
If you plan to donate blood: please discontinue drinking tea 3 or 4 days ahead of donating
as the tannins in it can block absorption of iron; drink lots of water; be sure to eat at regu-
lar meal times and drink plenty of fluids before donating.
For this to be a successful drive we need many donors , so please share this information
with friends and family members. St. Martins would like to share the gift of life with as
many people as possible.
For questions or to volunteer to help, please call DArcy Elsperman at 314-878-9248.

Life-saving trainingBy Sherrie Algren
St. Martins is in the
process of purchasing
an AED (automatedexternal defibrillator).
Each year approxi-
mately 250,000 people
die from an
out-of-hospital cardiac
event in the United
States. Without imme-
diate
CPR (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and early defibrillation
(within 3-5 minutes of the event), the
survival rate is approx. 6.4%. With
immediate CPR and early use of an
AED, survival approaches 74%.
An AED is only effective in conjunc-
tion with early CPR and no AED is
effective if left on the shelf when a
cardiac event occurs. It needs to be
used by people trained in CPR/AED.
Although we have a fire station down
the street, rescuers may not be able
to respond in that critical 5 minute
window.
For your protection, St. Martin's
has instituted a First Response
Program which includes CPR train-
ing and training in the use of an
AED. The training will be done by
an American Heart Association /
Red Cross instructor.
The cost of this training, in the
community, varies from $40 to
$70. But St. Martin's will be able to
offer the same training at a cost of
$10 per person with a grant available
(if willing to be trained and unable to
pay). Training times will be available
August 4, 5, 6 and 7. A class lasts
approximately 4 hours. Classes will
be offered morning, afternoon, and
evening.
It will be necessary for a representa-
tive or two from each group using
the church to be certified in CPR/
AED. This will protect our partici-
pants in case of a sudden cardiac
event.
Please sign up in Park Hall for a four-
hour session. We appreciate your
cooperation with this important pro-
gram.

St. Martin's Vestry
Treasurers reportBy Larry Cornelius, Treasurer
We are halfway through 2011 and we are tracking toour budget nicely. I see a lot of excitement and energy
at St. Martins and with this comes the revival of some
old ministries, the morphing of other ministries and the
genesis of new missions and projects.
We will be doing a lot of visioning and planning during
the fall and at some point we will start working on the
2012 annual budget and plan. Note this is not just about
numbers. If you are a vestry member, ministry chair,
staff member or just an interested member, please start
to think in terms of what the future needs are for your
missions, ministries and projects. If there are resource
gaps between what you want to do and the current
funding, please thoughtfully reflect on how those gaps
might be closed.
I would ask each of you to take time in the next couple
of months to pray and reflect on the future as we start
to plan how best to do Gods work at St. Martins
through the application of our time, talent and treasure.

The images of the storm in
Joplin, Missouri are difficult tocomprehend. So many times
when tragedy strikes, we are
left feeling helpless and we
look for direction to channel
our help. Perhaps just looking
at the simple, yet powerful
words of the saint for whom
our church is named gives us
that direction.
This fall the people of Joplin
will face a new challenge.
Their school district has 7,700
students returning to the
classroom on August 17. Many
of the students families have
lost their homes and posses-
sions; the loss of loved ones
and neighbors has been emo-
tionally devastating. A por-tion of the students will be
going to alternate locations
for their classrooms while
the difficult work of repairing
and rebuilding schools begins.
Joplin School District has
developed the Adopt an
Eagle project to provide
school supplies for students(the Eagle is the Joplin school
mascot). Donations are being
accepted to help purchase
supplies for K-12 students.
An average of $40 is the cost
to supply a backpack with
necessary school supplies.
You can help these students by
adopting one or more EAGLE.
Of course any donated amountwill be gratefully accepted.

Reflections from Joplin, continued from page 1
the car went from laughs and conversation
to silence and disbelief. Even as I write this,
like the media tried, I tell you the town
looked like a war zone.
At first, I was okay cleaning up. But then I
found an old photo, probably from the 60's
or early 70's of a family and I started crying.
I wasn't even sure if the picture was the
family of the house I was cleaning up. A
picture that small could have blown from
miles away. But I pictured the family in the
photo and wondered if this was their
house. Where were they now? Were they
alive? Will they come back and rebuild?
Questions raced through my mind.
Even with frequent breaks including lunch,
the temperature took the wind out of our
sails early and frequently. We worked from
10 until about 4 and we were physically and
emotionally drained from the day.
Overall, it was a rewarding trip for all of us.
About 65% of the cleanup, we are told, is
complete. The storm damaged one third of
the city. Your prayers are still needed to
help finish the rest of the clean up before
the rebuilding begins. This trip meant a lot
to me and I will like to do it again in the
future some day. I would encourage you to
do the same. I'll never meet the family
whose house we cleaned up, but I hope
wherever they are, they are forever safe.
Lord, if your people need me, I will not refuse the work. Your will be done.
- St. Martin of Tours
St. Martins has a long
history of outreach. This
outpouring of generosity
is a celebration of our
stewardship. We will con-
tinue to present many
opportunities to help
those in need in our local
community, around our
state and throughout the
world.
Many people have asked
what they can do to sup-
port the people of Joplin
following the devastating
tornado that hit that city
earlier this summer. Many
worthwhile charitablegroups are forming to help
the tornado victims --
thanks to Beth Buehler
and Steve Gillies for bring-
ing these efforts to our
attention. You can find
other opportunities to help
on our website at

Spreading the Good Newsby Janis Greenbaum,
Communications Coordinator
We are working to update all our com-
munications at St. Martins and we need
your help!
Creating a Communications
Committee:
Were looking for members to join our
new Communications Committee. This
group will meet once a month and help
keep tabs on all our communications
needs at St. Martins. Duties will include:
reviewing the calendar for news-
worthy events
reporting your ministrys news to
the committee
posting on social media outlets
(Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
writing stories
taking pictures
creating graphics
providing technical computer sup-
portYou dont have to be an expert or a pro-
fessional to be on this committee! Obvi-
ously, no one can do all these things
well... if you have an interest in any one of
these areas, please consider lending your
energy to this committee. Our first meet-
ing will be Thursday, August 25 at 7 p.m.
Adults and teens are welcome!
Parish Directory:
We will be publishing a new membership
directory in early September. Please look
in the most recent blue Parish Directory
& Ministry Handbook and answer the
following questions:
Are you and your family listed?
If so, is all your information correct?
(please check address, phone num-
ber and e-mail address)
If you are a ministry leader, do we
need to update your ministry de-
scription?
If your information needs to be added,
corrected or updated, please get in touch
with Communications Coordinator Janis
Greenbaum at:
[email protected] as soon as
possible.
Website:
St. Martins website is under reconstruc-
tion following a disastrous run-in with
devilish hackers in July. Many thanks to
Mike Reeves, Eric Codak and especially
Kurt Greenbaum for helping us get
through this crazy time. The site is again
safe to visit. We continue to work to
create a new site that will provide an
even better outlet for information and
invitation.
Thanks for your patience!
