those are just a few of the items being collected

for St. Martins Garage Sale the first weekend of

June. This will be the 38th year St. Martins has

hosted the fundraiser. After taking a few years off,

organizers are excited about the prospects for

    this years event. Judi and

    Chuck Batch are co-

    chairs. It really was a

    tradition, says Judi. Its

a real service to the com-

    munity. People are so

    excited were having it

again. Judi says the sale not only provides our

community with a place to purchase quality goods

at great prices, it also brings St. Martins members

together as we prepare for the event. All the pro-

ceeds from this years garage sale will go to out-

reach projects including youth mission trips and

    Circle of Concern.

    Dear brothers and

    sisters in Christ,

    Spring is in bloom! And

    just like the signs of

new life in nature, I am

    very pleased with the

    growth in our parish.

    We are gathering

    strength with new

    members, programs,

    and leadership by the

laity. I enjoy being around St.

Martins because of the energythat you give to our church. You

are making a difference not only

    within the congregation, but in

the community. I am proud of

our staff and the work it takes to

offer the array of ministries we

have on an ongoing basis. Indeed,

one of the things that attracted

me to St. Martins was the

amount of lay leadership and the

    possibilities of a congregation

    working in a community like

    West County.

    However, one question that

keeps coming up for me is: how

    are we spiritually grounded? Pro-

    grams and leadership are impor-

    tant tools for discipleship but

they are not the foundation of

our identity as Gods church. I

    love outreach and missions and

know them to be instruments of

Gods grace in the world, but

they are the branches and fruit of

the spiritual tree, not the trunk as

the source of life. So what serves,

    for all of us, as

    that spiritual

    source for our

    various minis-tries?

    I think it has to

    do with our

    life of worship

    as individuals

    and as a con-

    gregation. I

believe the source of a faith-

oriented life has to do with acombination of prayer, devotional

    reading, fellowship and action.

Much of my focus as a priest is

    about encouraging the spiritual

work first, whether it is with the

    staff, vestry members, or any

other groups, and then order the

    steps for ministry. The sacramen-

tal life is our foundation as wit-

nesses to Gods love in action.

There are also times I need to be

reminded of this ordering so that

    my church involvement keeps a

    healthy perspective maintaining

the spiritual life as a priority.

    Otherwise the busyness of

church can take over the motiva-

    tions derived from paying atten-

tion to what the Spirit of God issaying to me and Gods people.

Therefore, I believe that it is time

for St. Martins to bring on board

at least one or two part-time

priests in this calendar year. The

    vestry has been addressing the

topic of an associate priest since I

    interviewed in November

2009. I am very much aware

    that adding a full-time position

may not happen in the nextyear, but I think we can be

    creative with some part-time

positions to add depth to our

    spiritual life, particularly in the

    areas of weekly Bible studies,

    worship opportunities and

    pastoral care.

I hope that you will pray for

our church and the wonderfulcall that God gives us to serve

    the wider congregation and the

West County area. I give God

the praise for who we are and

    who we are becoming. Please

consider adding at least one or

two more priests at St. Mar-

tins in your daily prayers. I

    believe this would deepen and

    strengthen our faith and wit-

ness as a church who is so

very blessed to be a blessing.

    Happy Eastertide, Fr. Jon

St. Martins Church, in conjunction with Cir-

cle of Concern, will again sponsor a scholar-

ship for high school seniors. This will be the

tenth consecutive year St. Martins has partici-

pated in this program. Sunday, May 1 will

be the kick-off for this years scholarship pro-

gram. The St. Martins Scholarship will be

granted to a west county high school senior

from the Valley Park, Rockwood or Parkway

school districts. The scholarship is to help a

student with financial needs get a good start

St. Martins scholarship programwith college. Glenn Koenen, Executive Direc-

tor of Circle of Concern, will be attending

both services on May 1 to explain the oppor-tunity this program provides. Please consider

supporting this scholarship with your dona-

tions. This program not only supports a de-

serving student but also publicizes St. Martins

Church within our local schools and specifi-

cally the senior class as they apply for college

funding. Special envelopes will be provided

    May 1 for your giving.

Financial updateI appreciate everyone for helping us finish

2010 very close to financial break-even. Addi-

    tionally, the congregation responded faithfully

to the fall Stewardship Campaign. This al-

lowed the vestry to approve a budget for

2011 that includes additional needed pro-

grams and projects while remaining close to

break-even. And through the first quarter of

the year, we are ahead of budget. Thank you

    to all.

The financial information for the church is

maintained on a cash basis and the numbers

you see weekly are reflective of our cash po-

    sition. Without borrowing from ourselves

(the Packwood Fund) or drastically control-

ling payments, we must try to maintain a con-

stant flow of income and manage spending

throughout the year. We simply do not have

a lot of flexibility. I encourage all of you to

help by keeping up pledge payments during

the historically lean months of summer and

early fall when attendance is lower. We are

working on some electronic capabilities thatwill allow you to pay your pledge even if you

are out of town. More on this in future arti-

    cles.

I want to put in a plug for the HVAC Fund that

allowed us to replace many of the heating and

air conditioning units last year. We borrowed

    approximately $48,000 from the Packwood

Fund, which we agreed would be paid back with

interest in five years or less. We have already

collected 50% of this amount in donations and I

want to encourage the congregation to help get

this amount paid back well in advance of the five

year goal. We benefit each week from the use

    of this equipment.

Finally, we are all hopeful and excited about the

future of St. Martins, but it will take time and

the faithfulness of all of us to make it happen.

Father Jon Hall and the vestry are planning for

the future. However, the growth and expanded

ministries we all desire and pray for need to be

supported with our time, talents, and yes, our

treasures. Please help us build on the progress

we have made to become financially healthy. I

dream of a thriving church which shares our

good fortune with the diverse communities

where we have ministries and missions. Letsmake this dream a reality.

    Best regards in Christ,

    Larry Cornelius, Treasurer

For many teens, its the highlight of

    their church life, something that

    theyll remember and reference

    throughout their lives. Mission

    trips are so transformational be-

    cause they are all-encompassing.

Its a 24-7 immersion. They chal-

lenge limits and comfort zones just

as Jesus did with his disciples.

When our hands are busy with ahammer, were often open to lis-

    tening to Christ. Lifelong friend-

ships are formed on these trips,

often with someone who at first

    glance seemed so completely dif-

ferent than ourselves. They are a

    chance to embody ones faith

    through work and relationships,

with all of the accompanying pains

and joys. Its a transformation from

a learned faith to a living faith.

this month to continue his widely popular

classes on the Psalms. McCann is a noted bibli-

cal scholar and the Evangelical Professor of

Biblical Interpretation at Eden Seminary in

Webster Groves. He last visited us in Febru-

Christian stewardship is the grateful and responsible use of God's gifts in

empowered by the Holy Spirit, commit themselves to conscious, purpose-

    ful decisions.

Have you noticed a fresh, new look in Park

Hall, the Narthex and our main hallway lately?

That new look comes from a fresh coat of

paint and that fresh coat of paint comes

from the hard work of a dedicated group of

church members donating their time and

painting skills to get the job done.

Scott Pattengill and Sherrie Algren recently

completed the hallway and the Narthex. That

painting job took 16 gallons of paint and re-

quired some delicate and brave work on scaf-

    folding.

Another group of hard-working painters took

on the huge walls of Park Hall: Sherrie &

Doug Algren, Rich Luebcke, Steve Lyle, Mick

McCann, Jim & Alice McLaughlin, Bob

    Pomeroy and Mike Reeves.

Scott Pattengill is a painter by profession. He

says he sees this work as a part of his stew-

All new ministry events should have a Ministry

Reservation Request completed six weeks in

advance of the event. Once received by the

church office, the request will be brought to

the next staff meeting for clearance with the

parish calendar. After approval, the event willbe posted to the calendar and confirmed with

the ministry leader so that the committee can

confidently proceed with planning and pro-

    moting the event.

Requests for use of the facility by St. Martins

members for non-ministry events should be

made using the Campus Use Agreement

booklet (white, has icon with cross at the top

on cover). This booklet is taken directly from

the main policy and contains the pages perti-

nent for members who wish to hold a private

social event or secure space for another or-

ganization of which they may be a member.

The Campus Use Agreement booklet is also for

use by outside persons or groups who would

like to rent space for a meeting or other ac-

tivity. The Campus Use Agreement informs the

potential user of terms which will govern

activities held at St. Martins and gives details

regarding liability and fees. This Campus Use

Agreementbooklet should be used for all non-

    ministry requests.

If you have questions, you may direct them to

    [email protected].

    by Janet Theiss, Parish Administrator

A new Campus Use Policy has been ap-

proved by the Vestry. This comprehensive

policy document guides the use of St. Mar-

tins building and grounds by ministries,

members and outside groups who might

wish to hold activities and events at St. Mar-

tins. The policys stated goal is to utilize

the space in a manner that supports our

Christian Mission and to provide a positive

experience for the individuals and groups

    that utilize our facility.

All ministry leaders are urged to read this

policy which covers processes, risk, guide-

lines for safety and more. A copy is postedon St. Martins website under Schedules

FormsPolicies in the column on the left side

of the webpage. Hard copies of the Campus

Use Policyare available in the narthex.

In light of this new policy, the old pink

form titled Event Planning Form has been

replaced by the Ministry Reservation Re-

quest Form. This new form is also printed

on pink paper with the diagram of Park Hallon the back for your convenience. This Min-

istry Reservation Request form is available on

the bulletin board in the corridor, from the

church office or may be printed from the

    website under SchedulesFormsPolicies.

New procedures for planning church events

    Copies of the

    Campus Use Policy,

    Ministry Reservation

    Request Form and

    the Campus Use

    Agreement

    are available at the

    church or on

Upon returning to work in the church office after my suc-

cessful shoulder replacement surgery, I discovered I wasnt

as young as I used to be and it was time for me to retire

again. It has been my pleasure to serve this part of Christs

church for seven and a half years, but it is now time for me

to have my own schedule and not a time clock.

Speaking of my surgery, thank you for your prayers, cards,

phone calls, visits, and food. Each was a great support for

which I am grateful. A special thank you to Meals by ECW.

The meals were wonderful and lasted for days.
