GUIDING LIGHT ST. MARY MYSTICAL ROSE

We the faithful of St. Mary Mystical Rose Parish are a Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Detroit. We serve God through His Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, with the empowerment and the

strength of the Holy Spirit: to celebrate the Holy Sacraments and Worship, Christian Service and Faith Education, to evangelize and practice our faith in active stewardship--with the faith, spirit

and humility of Mary, the Rose of God and our Patron Saint.

September 3, 2017 Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Whoever wishes to come after me must

deny himself, take up his cross, and

follow me, (Matthew 16:21-27).

There was a high school in Glen Arbor, Michigan that had

been fundraising and saving their money for a trip to Wash-

ington. They did very well in their fundraising, as the day to

set out for their trip to our nation’s capitol draw near. Sud-

denly they learned one of their classmates, Duane Richard-

son, had cancer. The treatment would be costly. They were

all in agreement, to give their travel funds to defray the cost

of their classmate’s expenses it meant giving up their trip.

Today’s Good News tells us something similar to that:

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take

up his cross, and follow me,…whoever loses his life for my

sake will find it,” (Matt 16:21-27). True, these generous

high-schoolers did not give up their lives for their class-

mate, but they were willing to give up part of their lives,

and a very enjoyable part at that. They were willing to deny

themselves.

As followers and people of God all of us have to deny our-

selves, to make some sacrifice. What we give up to be true

followers of Christ may not be as newsworthy as the gener-

ous sacrifice of the senior class in our story, but God will

“repay every man for what he had done.”

It is much easier for us to sleep in and not go to Mass, but

we are going to celebrate our lives in Him. It is much easier

to sit down and eat without asking God’s blessing. Getting

up and going to work is not always easy. A father and a

mother must forget their weariness and comfort for their

loved ones.

Our Lord did many things that were difficult. He carried

many little crosses before He carried the big one. Jesus en-

dured ridicule, rejection, and the prejudice of some people

who did not like His message. Yet, they even put Jesus and

nailed Him to the cross. Yet, He obeyed and bowed to the

will of His Father. Jesus not only taught us to pray: “Thy

will be done,” He showed us how to do the will of His Fa-

ther, no matter how difficult.

Why not take all our little crosses and big ones too, and

drop them at the foot of Jesus Cross. Then all of us, priest

and people, will offer them to God as our greatest gift. Jesus

asks us to carry our cross, to make some sacrifice as did the

young people in our story. He will always help you carry

that cross and make that effort. We must never be afraid of

doing what is good, for Jesus is on our side to help us

through, and to cheer us for all that we do in His holy name.

Amen.
