Nearly 1.8 million students are currently educated in 6,352 Catholic schools in cities, suburbs, small towns and rural communities around the country. Ninety-nine percent of Catholic school students graduate from high school and 86 percent of Catholic school graduates attend college. This percentage has been consistent for over 20 years. Since 1875, our parish school has continued this proud tradition of faithful education. Presently, St. Mary School houses both an elementary school (K-5) and middle school (Grades 6-8) program. This is the time of year when families should be visiting our school and making decisions about enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year. If you are thinking about a Catholic education for your child or grandchild, please contact the school and apply. We have financial aid available for qualifying families, so don’t let anything stand in the way of a quality education in faith and service. Everyone is invited to visit the school this Sunday, from 12:00 noon through 1:30 p.m. This Saturday, February 2, we will have an extra Mass at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus and is also known as Candlemas Day (Spanish: Candelaria), since it is traditional to bless candles at Mass that day. The feast was first observed in the Eastern Church as “The Encounter” (Hypapante). In the sixth century, it began to be observed in the West: in Rome with a more penitential character and in Gaul (France) with solemn blessings and processions of candles. The Presentation of the Lord marks 40 days since the celebration of Christmas. The book Ceremonies of the Liturgical Year offers this commentary: “In obedience to the Old Law, the Lord Jesus, the first-born, was presented in the Temple by his Blessed Mother and his foster father. This is another ‘epiphany’ celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing and procession of candles on this day.” If you attend the Mass on February 2, please come early and bring candles to be blessed for home use at the beginning of Mass. You are also invited to bring the figure of the infant Jesus from your home Nativity scene; these figures will be blessed at the end of Mass, at which time there will also be a blessing of children. FROM THE PASTOR:

This Sunday is the first day of Catholic Schools Week, a nationwide observance calling our attention to the great things happening at Catholic schools all across America. Nearly 1.8 million students are currently educated in 6,352 Catholic schools in cities, suburbs, small towns and rural communities around the country. Ninety-nine percent of Catholic school students graduate from high school and 86 percent of Catholic school graduates attend college. This percentage has been consistent for over 20 years.

from Ascension Press (Jeff Cavins) Mondays, February 18-April 8, 2019, in the Commons

Paul’s letter to the Galatians speaks directly to the heart of Christians and addresses the most important question we can ask: “What must we do to be saved?” This fascinating letter reveals the merciful love that God the Father has for us, His children. It speaks of the extraordinary gift of salvation that Jesus has won for us, and it explains how we can unite ourselves to Christ’s redeeming sacrifice through faith and love. Galatians is a study that will reignite your love for God as you learn of the astonishing love God has for you.

This is an eight-week study session. The Participant’s book is $25.00. Please contact Mary Dutton via email at [email protected] or text/call 740-361-0121, or call the Parish Office to register (740-382-2118). Deadline is February 1st.
