Dear Friends,
November, a month of contrasts! We start this month by looking back and remembering, with All Saints day, then All Souls day and then of course Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. But on the very last day of the month we have Advent Sunday, when we start to look forward to the return of Christ when he will come to claim his kingdom. Sometimes we think of this as an end, and a beginning, but it is one continual process as we live the yearly cy-cle of adoration, worship, reflection and hopeful preparation.
All Souls day is one that many find difficult because it seems that we are focussing on a painful loss, but the truth couldn’t be more different. We should be celebrating and giving thanks that we can still have a tie with the departed. Our time with them in this life was paralleled by a spiritual relationship and while the body may die and that part of the relationship ends, our spiritual relationship continues and of the two, is the more permanent. As St Clare once wrote, “compared to the spiritual existence of eternity, our short time on earth is almost insignificant”. As we progress through the year in the presence of God, developing our relationship with Him, we can still hold the departed in our hearts and minds, praying that through God’s grace and mercy, we may one day be reunited with them. A well-known reading used frequently at funerals comes from Henry Scott-Holland and starts:
“Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room, I am I, and you are you, whatever we were to each other,

The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held at 7.30 pm on Wednesday
5 November 2014 in the Coronation Hall, to which all are most welcome to attend.

Church Close Housing Development
Brooks and Wood Ltd of Ipswich have been appointed by Orwell Housing
Association to build the ten affordable homes at Church Close. The contractor plans
to start work on 3 November 2014, initially clearing the site, setting up offices and
storage and fencing the boundary (where no permanent fencing exists). Thereafter
construction of the dwellings will start with a view to its completion by September
2015. The contractor is committed to minimising disruption to the neighbourhood
during the building operations. Any questions, queries or complaints should be ad-

Public notice issued by Wilby Parish Council for the information of residents
Wilby Parish Noticeboard
The Parish noticeboard is located outside the school opposite the village hall and has
recently been refurbished by the Parish Council. It provides a space to publicise
events and services of likely interest to the residents of Wilby Importantly it is also
used by the Parish Council, which is required by law to display a range of notices
including the agenda for its meetings and statutory notices relating to elections, audits
and certain planning decisions ( even though such notices may also be publicised on
its website). Recently little or no space has been available for such official material,
which will normally be placed on the left hand side of the noticeboard. The Parish
Council reserves the right to move notices to enable the display of statutory items.
Also it would be helpful and make best use of the limited space available if private
notices of events/services etc. were restricted to one notice and were removed if no
longer current. The school, church and village hall of course have their own
noticeboards to display forthcoming events.
WIlby Parish Council - New Parish Clerk
Wilby Parish Council is pleased to announce that Mrs Julie Collett has been appointed
as Clerk to the Council effective from 1 October 2014. Julie is currently the Clerk to
Huntingfield Parish Council and will be taking on Wilby as additional responsibility.

As ever, we've been busy at Wilby School. Please take note of these upcoming events, to
which the whole community is very welcome (all in the school hall):
• Thursday 6th November, 9 -10:30am – ‘Tea & Toys’, an informal session for par-
ents and pre-school children to play and get to know each other. You’re welcome
to come even if you’re not already at Wilby School!
• Tuesday 11th November, 6:30pm - performance of 'Archie Hamilton’s War', to
commemorate World War 1.
• Wednesday 12th November - repeat performance of 'Archie Hamilton's War'
• Saturday 6th December, 11:30 - 2 - Christmas Fayre

Over the past month we've had a special parents session on how we teach maths at Wilby -
as it's very different to how it would have been taught when our parents were in
school. Our Harvest Festival was held in St. Mary's Church, with readings, prayers and
song giving thanks for the bounty of the season. An Open Day was held to welcome
prospective parents into the school.
The High Suffolk Sports Partnership Cross Country Trials were held at Mellis Common
on a beautiful Autumn afternoon. Several of our children made it through to the County
finals later in the year. Well done!
Our Key Stage 2 children had a fascinating trip to the Imperial War Museum Duxford,
as part of learning more about WW1. The day included some role-play, with the children
imagining the pressures, pros and cons of enlisting, as well as visits to the hangars and
special exhibits.
Like all schools, our strategic direction is guided by our Governing Body - which for
Wilby includes four parent governors, two staff governors, two Foundation governors
(nominated by the Church), one nominated by the Local Education Authority, and two
drawn from the local community.
Our community governors are Mrs Judith Rayner-Green and Mr Ian Chapman.
Last but not least, on Saturday 13th October our Headteacher Philippa Nunn was married
in St. Mary's Church, Wilby, to Robbie Coleman - so Miss Nunn is now
Mrs Coleman! We wish them all the very best.

Good neighbours is a scheme to help people in our villages with transport to doc-

Service of Remembrance and Dedication of our New War Memorial 9.30am Sunday, 9
th November on Brundish Village Green
LET US COME TOGETHER TO REMEMBER THEM
As we have all been reminded, this year is the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of
hostilities which came to be known as The Great War and latterly The First World War.
If we can cast our minds back to what life was like in Brundish in 1914, we would find it
difficult to see any real connection to how we live today. Yes, the old cottages might look
familiar; probably more run down, the church would be recognizable, maybe the pub. The
village hall would be populated by our children as it was the primary school and there
would have been a working forge, two windmills, a blacksmith alongside The Crown and
a shop at Mill Cottage with the post office up The Street. The roads would be no more than
mud tracks, and most of the men and women in the village would have worked the land.
Imagine then, after four years of war, the devastating effect on our village with less
manpower, nineteen good men having lost their lives. Men who were husbands, fathers,
sons, nephews, workers all. It was to take decades to recover before it all happened again.
Some surnames on the existing war memorial in the church are still recognizable to
residents today. James Abbott was Brundish’s solitary victim during the Second World
War and his loss was as poignant as everyone’s who died during the First World War.
These brave men have their names etched into granite tablets which are inserted into three
recesses on the plinth of our village sign and the tablets will become a permanent reminder
to us all of the ultimate sacrifice they gave us all for the freedom we enjoy today.
A great deal work and generosity has gone into providing our village with this new
memorial. The Memorial was finished with the help of Councillor Matthew Hicks; who
arranged a grant of £250 towards the cost of the engraving, from Suffolk CC. It is to be
hoped that as many of us as possible will give up half an hour of our time on
Remembrance Sunday to come down to our village green to pay our respects to these men
of Brundish, especially in such an important year.
There will be a short Service of Remembrance and the Memorial will be dedicated by our
Rector, Reverend David Burrell. Mario and Lesley at The Crown have very kindly agreed
to open the pub after the service to serve coffee.

You may not be related, You may not know their names,
But the air they breathed was Brundish air, and they walked the Brundish lanes.
And like as not they liked the same things we enjoy,
tho’ the pace of life was slower when our fathers and their fathers played,
around here, as naughty little boys.
They left this village, families and friends and went off into the unknown.
Some were lucky, some came back…..but some will never come home.
So if you have a moment to acknowledge the lives they gave,
come to the Green on Sunday morning to say thanks to the Brundish brave.

Benefice Christingle Service 4pm Sunday, 30th November at Laxfield Church
You are all invited to this Benefice Services which combines a Christingle with the
marking of the 100th anniversary of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
Advent Carol Service by Candlelight 6.30 pm Sunday, 7th December at St Lawrence’s Church
A very atmospheric service for Advent which includes Bach’s Cantata Number 61
“Come Redeemer of our Race” (Num komm der Heiden Heiland), as well as carols
and hymns for the occasion. It will include The Chantry Singers and the Brundish
String Ensemble with celebrated singers Lindsey Gowers (Soprano) and John
Jones (Bass). Directed by Michael Spencer. We are very fortunate in Brundish to
be able to have the resources to celebrate Advent in this most moving way. Please
do come along. You will be most welcome.
Carols at The Crown 8 pm Wednesday, 17th December at The Brundish Crown
Lesley and Mario once again invite everyone to join in the convivial atmosphere of
our fine old country pub for an evening of festive cheer. It would be lovely to see
more of you this year as this is always such an enjoyable and friendly community
occasion. Sharpen up your vocal chords in time for the Carol Service, helped no
doubt, by the appropriate lubrication! See you there.

6.30 pm on Christmas Eve at St Lawrence’s Church
Last Christmas Eve, an incredible congregation of 178 people turned up at the
church. This was the biggest attendance for over 60 years. It would be too much to
ask that that be even equalled, but who knows? The Chantry Singers directed by
Michael Spencer will be there on the night (not that Brundish folk need any help
with singing!) and our wonderful old church will be bathed in candlelight to cele-
brate this most holiest of evenings. Last year the church went back to the tradi-
tional concept of lessons and carols, in a shortened version of the service from
King’s College, Cambridge that afternoon. It will be similar this year. It has been
said before, but St Lawrence’s on Christmas Eve has the ability to soother the
frazzled souls of even the hardiest individual. Please do join us, where, as always,
you will be warmly welcomed. Christmas Midnight Communion 11.30 pm Christmas Eve at St Lawrence’s Church
People from the length and breadth of the benefice will unite in Brundish to
celebrate the first Communion of Christmas. The Chantry Singers will be there
along with organist Michael Spencer. This is an important, age-old service and,
whether you are a communicant or not, you are most welcome to join us.

Brundish Harvest Celebrations
There is always a lot of work connected with the Harvest Service and the Harvest
Supper and that cannot be stressed enough. As usual, it is all down to the few who feel it
is important to keep these age-old traditions going. They may say it was all worth it
when it is over and they are right of course, but no amount of gratitude could be enough
to thank all those who organize these events and services for the village. The time,
money and energy they expend is over-generous on their part. They know who they are
and God bless everyone of them.
Brundish Christmas Market/Fair
Sadly, there will be no Christmas Fair this year.
Maybe we might be able to think about something less taxing on the organizational front
next year. The Fair, apart from its fund-raising advantage to the church, gave people of
the village a chance to gather to have a chat and a drink together. This year, we will
miss that, however there are plenty of other opportunities to meet such as the Christmas
Coffee Shop on 4th December, the Christmas Cinema Night on 11th December and Car-
ols at The Crown on 17th December. Let’s hope that we can all make a big effort to so-
cialise with our neighbours during this lovely time of the year and support those who do
all the organizing.
Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal
Our village co-ordinator, Diane Palmer will be calling on houses around Brundish this
month with poppies for sale. Last year’s village tally was one of the biggest ever, so in
this very special year please be as generous as you are able. Thank you.

BRUNDISH FILM PROGRAMME AUTUMN 2014
Brundish Film - 13 November 2014
We had a very good turnout for our first film of the season “The Book Thief”,
a poignant story of a young girl who learns to read whilst growing up in Nazi
Germany, the silence in the hall at the end of the film being tribute to the quality of
the film. DVDs of all the films shown in Brundish are available for hire at £3
on application to [email protected].
Our next presentation on Thursday 13 November 2014 is the thriller
“The Two Faces of January”
based on the book by Patricia Highsmith.
Starring Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst, the film tells the story of a glamorous
American couple on holiday in Greece who are not quite what they seem and having
got involved with a con artist have to flee Athens. Certificate 12A. Doors open as
usual at 7 pm, for a 7.30 pm start, tickets payable at the door (£5 for adults and £4.50
for Under 18s). Bar facilities including now Todd’s Suffolk Apple Juice. To reserve
