Would you sleep on the street to help
homeless people?
On Friday 10th October, Father Ed and a group of volunteers, will be sleeping
out to raise money to help homeless people move off the streets and back into
accommodation.
Homelessness can affect any one of us. This is clear from the range of individuals who use the
West London Day Centre. Every day up to 100 homeless people visit the day centre and since last
year’s Sleep Out, the Advice Service has supported at least 233 people to move back into
accommodation. However, homelessness continues. In 2013 - 14, we saw 1,139 newly homeless people
at the day centre, which makes it vital that our work develops.
The sponsored Sleep Out will be held outside St Marylebone Parish Church on Marylebone Road.
All the money raised will go directly towards the West London Day Centre Advice Service,
helping homeless people off the streets and back into accommodation. There will be activities in the
early evening, followed by the sleep out until Saturday morning where there will be breakfast served at
the Day Centre.
Would you sponsor Fr Ed or take part?
For more information and to register visit www.wlm.org.uk/sleep-out or contact Fr Ed,

The theme of the week is EMBRACING THE UNKNOWN and
our poem of the week is ‘The Door’ by
Miroslav Holub (1923 –1998).
The Door Go and open the door.
Maybe outside there’s
A tree, or a wood,
A garden,
Or a magic city.
Go and open the door.
Maybe a dog’s rummaging,
Maybe you’ll see a face,
or an eye,
or the picture
of a picture.
Go and open the door,
If there’s a fog
It will clear.
Go and open the door.
Even if there’s only
The darkness ticking,
Even if there’s only
The hollow wind,
even if
nothing
is there,
go and open the door.
at least
there’ll be
a draught.
What is the poet suggesting will happen if you ‘open the door’?

Every little girl, wherever she is in the world, deserves the chance to wear a pretty dress and for
many of the girls the appearance of being well dressed & cared for can make a big difference to the
way they are treated.
After the October half term break, the DT Textiles Department will be running a ‘Dress a girl
around the world’ club after school on a Wednesday.
In order for students at SMS to feel they can help this worthy cause and for the club to run we are
looking for donations of the following:
- pretty cotton pillowcases or similar fabric (nothing too flimsy please)
- elastic, ribbons, bias binding & other pretty trimmings
Please drop off any items with Dot at main site reception.
Thank you in advance for helping to support this worthy cause.

Dress a girl around the world is a
campaign under Hope4Woman
International that has been bringing
dignity to young girls around the
world since 2006.
The idea is simple - to make a pretty
dress out of a pillowcase!

This year, all Year 7 and 8 students are studying French at SMS -
c'est fantastique ! Every month, there will be a bilingual item in
the newsletter about France, its language and culture. Allons-y !
Septembre is the month of vendanges,
when grapes are harvested after
ripening in the summer sun, in order
to make wine. The vendanges are done
either manually or mechanically, the
former being a typical summer job for
university students. This is also a time of numerous local
celebrations, as wine-making is a very old tradition in France.

Bonjour!
Key Stage 3
On the 14th- 17th of September, Ms McColl, Bryony Jones and I, took part in the battlefield tour
programme along with other schools from West London. We visited many graves, museums and
battlefields which were very eye opening and emotive.
On the first day we met at Twickenham train station with anticipation, fear and excitement bubbling away
inside us. We were soon to learn that there was nothing to be afraid of, as we were greeted by equally
scared looking people, all clutching suitcases and packed lunches (probably containing more sweets than
actual lunch food!). After loitering for a bit, meeting wonderful Bob (our tour guide who wore a panama
hat and fabulous shirts), and hugs and promises to send postcards home (that never actually happened…)
we set off to our first destination; a Kingswood site in Ashford!
The coach was full of lively chatter, getting to know names. The environment was incredibly encouraging,
reassuring me not to think of my previous fears.
After long journey we finally made it to Ashford, where cups of squash and tea were waiting for us. We
unpacked our things and were briefed on the days ahead of us. After that we made our way over to a
VERY daunting looking structure called ‘Jacobs Ladder’. After being told that I actually had to climb this
death trap I took a moment to re-evaluate my thoughts on the human race. The day continued with
more “team building” activities, followed by a delightful, and very much needed dinner, we settled into
bed and fell happily into a deep sleep.
This did not last long. At 6:30 we awoke and met for breakfast at
7am with our packed bags and very un-fresh faces. After shoving
down a mixture of beans, sausages, bacon, bread and other
delicious things we were all packed into the coach and set off for
France!
Finally we arrived at Calais!!! We made our way to our
accommodation, dumped our bags, learnt the names of the other
people in our room and were rushed off again to Tyne Cot
Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the
Missing in Ypres. This was a hard part of the trip as Tyne Cot is
the largest commonwealth cemetery in the world, everywhere you
looked were hundreds upon thousands of graves, and large stone
walls with the engravings of the names of many dead men with no
known grave.
From there we headed to Langemark, a German cemetery which
was drastically different. I found this very interesting, seeing how
the French displayed their dead compared to the Germans. As soon as you walked into the Lnage-
mark you were greeted with a mass grave containing 24,917 men who lost their lives in WWI.
To end the day we headed to Passchendaele Museum. I really enjoyed this as it was an incredibly good
museum that was very interactive, interesting and good fun! Ms McColl and I both tried on very heavy
helmets that did not suit us a bit! From there we headed back to our hotel and everyone changed into
slightly more formal attire. I changed into my school uniform as I was going to represent the school and lay a wreath at the Last Post Menin Gate Ceremony, which happens every night at 8 am every day of the
year.
First World War Centenary Battlefield
Tour
Key Stage 3
I felt incredibly honoured to do this, as the occasion was very poignant, and there were many ex and
present soldiers there. After this we headed out for a little bit of late night shopping in Ypres, which
involved the purchase of lots of Belgian chocolate!
The following day we went to Newfoundland Memorial Park, which was the site of the Somme battlefield.
It was very moving to think that people had fought and died for their country right where I was standing. I
particularly enjoyed the sheep, which were doing a great job of cutting the grass! Sheffield Memorial Park
was nearby so we paid our respects to the men that lay in the cemetery. Next we went to Thiepval
Memorial, this was very moving as everywhere you looked there were thousands of names engraved on
the walls, in fact there were 72,195 all belonging to British and South African men who lost their lives
during WWI. We then had a quick ice-cream break at Ulster Memorial tower in the glorious French
sunshine. After that we headed back to the hotel for our final night in Belgium.
On the final day we headed to the coach one last time. We
visited the ‘In Flanders Field Museum’ which I really enjoyed as it was very interesting, and moving. We then headed to a
workshop to make clay figures that were to be part of a bigger
exhibition. We really enjoyed this as it was great fun and it felt
great to be doing something that was going to be a part of
something beautiful to remember the men that lost their lives.
Finally we headed to Lijssenthoek Cemetery, where we were
given wooden tokens (some crosses, some other religious
symbols and some just a plain piece of wood) and found a grave
to place them on. We had a moment’s silence to remember all
who fought in the war, not just our allies, but everyone who lost
their lives; who had the courage to get out of their beds every
morning, put on their woodlouse ridden clothes, and step out
onto a battlefield not knowing whether they would ever come
back again. We remembered them.

Key Stage 5
Changing Your Negative Thoughts.... 1. Think of a situation that has worried you
stressed you out.
2. Write it down in the middle of the paper
3. Write around it all the negative thoughts
you have about it.
4. Now apply these techniques of disputing.
Logical – Does this thinking make sense?
Empirical – Is there any evidence for thinking
this way?
Pragmatic (Practical) – Is this way of thinking
helping me?
5. In ANOTHER COLOUR, challenge each of
those negative thoughts and write an oppo-
site, positive alternative thought for each
negative one.
Breathing Meditation 1 (Kabat-Zinn 1996)
Assume a comfortable posture lying on your back or sit-
ting. If you are sitting, keep the spine straight and let your shoulders drop.
Close your eyes if it feels comfortable.
Bring your attention to your belly, feeling it rise or expand
gently on the in-breath and fall or recede on the out-
breath.
Keep your focus on the breathing, being with each in-
breath for its full duration and with each out-breath for its
full duration, as if you were riding the waves of your own
breathing.
Every time you notice that your mind has wandered off
the breath, notice what it was that took you away and
then gently bring your attention back to your belly and the
feeling of the breath coming in and out.
If your mind wanders away from the breath a thousand
times, then your job is simply to bring it back to the
breath every time, no matter what it becomes preoccu-
pied with.
Practice this exercise for fifteen minutes at a convenient
time every day, whether you feel like it or not, for one
week and see how it feels to incorporate a disciplined
meditation practice into your life. Be aware of how it feels
to spend some time each day just being with your breath
without having to do anything.
