The PasTor’s Desk

Every once in a while it is important to remind ourselves that we all belong to something greater than ourselves. Individuals belong to communities, communities belong to larger communities and we all belong to God. The community of St. Mary’s belongs to the community of the Diocese of Paterson. As a parish of the diocese, we are subject to all sorts of things, not the least of which is a fi-nancial obligation to the diocese. Every parish with a parish school pays a financial assessment of 8% of its annual income. This is an important and reasonable program that helps the diocese meet its many expenses, including many of its charitable works. It’s like paying taxes. For the past 5 years the diocese froze every parishs’ assessment based on the income reported in fiscal year 2005-2006. Our assessable income that year was $1,592,838, so our annual assessment for 5 years should have been $127,427 but it was mis-calculated by the diocese, so we actually paid $98,810 per year. This year the diocese decided that the time had come to unfreeze the assessment and recalculate it based on the parish income for fiscal year 2010-2011. Our assessable income was $2,478,993 so as a result our new assessment is $198,318. I’ll give you a moment to catch your breath before I continue! As you can see, our assessment more than doubled, yet our income did not. So what’s going on? The diocese made a mistake 5 years ago in our favor. We submitted the proper income and expense report; however we took a deduction for religious education pay-roll expenses that was not allowed, so the diocese requested and we submitted an amended report. However, unbeknownst to us, the diocese calculated our assessment on the original report submitted, not the amended report. So for 5 years we paid an assessment that was lower than it should have been, but we didn’t know it. Now we are faced with this huge increase. I have asked the diocese to allow us time to gradually increase our assessment until it reaches $198,318 but as of this writing I have not heard back from the diocese. Obviously, this will put a strain on our parish budget. Our finance director, Greg Stripeikis, and our accounting manager, Carol Tarlo, are working very hard to make the necessary adjust-ments to the budget so that our services will not suffer. Unfor-tunately, I was forced to cancel a scheduled and much-deserved pay raise for the parish staff. I will keep you posted as this all progresses.Another project of the diocese that will affect the parish is its capital campaign called Partners in Faith. This is a 5-year, $40 million campaign for the capital needs of the diocese which include major repairs to the cathedral, Catholic Charities, Catholic Schools and diocesan priests’ health care. Each parish has been given a goal based on 85% of its income in fiscal year 2010-2011. The goal for St. Mary’s is $1,345,000. It is important to keep in mind that this is a goal and not an assessment. If the parish does not meet the goal, it will not be required to make up the difference. The parish will be able to keep 25% of all funds raised up to the parish goal and 60% of all funds raised over the goal. St. Mary’s is in phase

three of the campaign, so our efforts will begin in September 2013. Once again, I’ll keep you posted.

Moving on! Our GIFT program fall semester is in full swing. We partner with a number of area parishes in this great adult educa-tion program. We are happy to now be offering GIFT programs all year and at our different parish sites. Please check the bulletin and website for the program offerings. GIFT is a great way to learn more about our faith, scripture and our life as a church.

Today we are happy to welcome Franciscan Fr. Dan Horan, OFM to St. Mary’s. Fr. Dan will speak at all the masses and offer a pro-gram after the 12 noon mass on his new book, Dating God. This book is a great reflection on our life in relationship to God. The program will take place in Catherine Spina Hall.

By now you’ve all received a letter from me about Faith Direct. Faith Direct is an easy and convenient program to use and they even have a cool app for your iPhone! You will soon be getting a letter from me with more details about Faith Direct. In the mean- time, you may also want to visit the Faith Direct website, www.faithdirect.net, or call their toll-free number, 866.507.8757, for more information. If you so choose, you can also securely enroll online by using our parish code NJ23.

And just reminder to keep yourself informed as the Presidential election approaches. You can check out 2 excellent resources: the United States Catholic Bishops’ document Faithful Citizen-ship found at www.faithfulcitizenship,org or www.usccb.org and the Franciscans of Holy Name Province document called Franciscans are not “party animals.” This document provides broad parameters for our conscience formation drawing on the Franciscan tradition of five interconnected parameters that can guide our discernment. They are Care for Creation, consistent ethic of life, preferential option for the poor, peacemaking and the common good. The entire document can be found at http://www.hnp.org/jpic/election-2012.cfm.

Finally, sisters and brothers, we received word last Sunday after-noon that Fr. Gonzalo’s father, Jesus Humberto Torres-Mendoza died in Bogota, Columbia. Fr. Gonzalo left for Columbia on Tuesday. Please keep him and his family in your prayers.

Pace e Bene,

Over the years, the feedback GIFT has constantly received is that adults are interested in taking advantage

of opportunities to learn about our faith throughout the year – not just during the months of January and February. We heard you and are pleased to offer classes to help you grow in your faith during the Fall, Winter, Spring, on Saturdays and at different GIFT parishes. We pray that these changes will enable you continue to Grow in Faith and Theology!

GIFT Class B: Giving Flesh to Holiness: Saints as Living Witness to the Gospel “Saints are hints of what God is like...,” writes Father Andrew Greeley. Probe the richness of this treasure of our Catholic tradition with a celebration of the men and women who, throughout the ages, have lived with the Lord even while living among us. Why are they worthy of both our ven-eration and imitation? In this class, we will explore the theological and spiritual underpinnings we find in the great saints who serve as a “cloud of witnesses” and are members with us in the Church visible and invisible.

Instructor: Dr. Linda Barratte Location: Holy Spirit Church in Pequannock, Saturday, November 3 and November 10 from 9:00 AM to Noon.

GIFT Class C: A Journey to Bethlehem with St. Matthew and St. Luke Take a break from the holiday madness and mayhem and find out about the real meaning of Christmas as recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. This class will examine the first two chapters of each of these Gospel texts that recount the Infancy Narratives describing the birth of Jesus Christ. Both Matthew and Luke have a different and important message to communicate about how Our Savior came into the world and how it was that the first two disciples of Christ, Joseph and Mary, walked by faith and not by sight on their own pilgrimage to the tiny village of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.

Instructors: Fr. Larry Anderson, OFM and Steve Kass Location: Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Wayne, Wednesday, November 28, December 5 and 12, 7:15 - 9:00 PM.

Oct. 21: “Dating God” Join Fr. Dan Horan, OFM after the 12:00 PM Mass as he discusses his new book, Dating God. “The Jour-ney to God,” says Fr. Dan, “is a lot like dating.” You have to get to know God in the same way and in a similar process as you would with someone you date, when you want to explore another person’s truest self. Catherine Spina Hall from 1:00 - 2:30 PM.
