OUR LADY OF LOURDES 160 years ago, February 11, 1858, the Immaculate Virgin Mary appeared for the first time to Bernadette Soubirous near Lourdes in France, in the Grotto of Massabielle. Through the poor child, Mary called sinners to penance, and thereby there arose in the Church a marvelous spirit of prayer and charity, especially in helping the poor and the sick.

WORLD DAY OF THE SICK: Pope Francis tells us, "The Church's service to the sick and those who care for them must continue with renewed vigour, in fidelity to the Lord's command (cf. Lk 9:2-6; Mt 10:1-8; Mk 6:7-13), and following the eloquent example of her Founder and Master. The theme for this year's Day of the Sick is provided by the words that Jesus spoke from the Cross to Mary, His Mother, and to John: "Woman, behold your son ... Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home" (Jn 19:26-27)." World Day of the Sick - Sunday, February 11th

The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated after the homily at both Masses this weekend. If you are suffering from bodily, psychological or spiritual illness and wish to be strengthened through this holy anointing, please come forward and receive this wonderful sacrament. Peace, Fr. Dennis, ofm

SEASON OF LENT: Lent is the yearly celebration by the Church of its corporate conversion in Jesus Christ. During Lent, the liturgy prepares catechumens to celebrate the Paschal Mystery by the various stages of Christian Initiation. It also prepares the faithful for Easter as they recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for the greatest Feast of

the year. Lent has two major purposes: It recalls or prepares for baptism, and emphasizes a spirit of penance. Through forty days of closer attention to God's Word and to more fervent prayer, believers are prepared to celebrate the Paschal Mystery. Lenten instructions stress these baptismal and penitential themes. During Lent, it is important to reflect on the social consequences of sin as well as the fact that the heart of the virtue of penance is hatred of sin as an offence against God. The Church encourages penitential practices that are external and social, reflecting the circumstances of individuals and communities, as we pray and do penance for sinners.

DO SOMETHING SPECIAL FOR LENT! Make this season personally meaningful!! COME to the Stations of the Cross, Fridays at 7:00 pm, and the Parish Lenten Mission, Feb. 24-Mar.1, and the daily Masses, Tuesdays at 7 pm, and Wednesdays to Fridays at 9 am during this Lenten Season!

YouTube video called "Lent in Three Minutes." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo1mjuy1NA0

I dare you to watch it! Fr. Dennis, ofm

HUMOUR An Englishman, a Frenchman and an Irishman were talking about their children. "My son was born on St George's Day," remarked the Englishman, "so we obviously decided to call him George." "That's a real coincidence," observed the Frenchman. "My daughter was born on Valentine's Day, so we named her Valentine." "That's really incredible," drawled the Irishman, "exactly the same thing happened with my son Pancake."

Roman Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Calgary

MEMO Date: February 2, 2018 To: Catholic Parishes, Ministries, Schools and Organizations From: Communications Subject: Option Regarding the Canada Summer Jobs Attestation

Here is a possible option that Catholic parishes, ministries, schools or organizations may wish to consider if applying for the Canada Summer Jobs program:

1. Print out the application form 2. Strike out the following clause which is currently the third bullet point in the Attestation:

“Both the job and my organization’s core ...” 3. Insert the following clause (which would become the fourth and final bullet point in the

Attestation: “I attest my organization will abide by the law in our hiring practices and all our other activities.”

4. With the new bullet point having been added, check the box “I attest”. 5. Mail or fax the completed application form by the deadline 2 February 2018 - before

midnight. This should highlight how faith groups and media are questioning the government’s approach, especially in view of the Charter’s protections for the fundamental freedoms of religion, conscience, thought, belief, opinion and expression which are at stake. Here is a sample of the Attestation section from an application form that has been filled out as proposed above:
