THE RESPONSIBILITY OF OUR FAITH Today is a day simply to ponder the fact that in baptism we were claimed by God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading from Deuteronomy prompts us to fix in our hearts the truth that God is the Lord of both heaven and earth and there is no other god. Saint Paul reminds us that, because we received the Spirit of adoption in bap-tism, we are now children of God. In the Gospel Jesus charges us with the responsibil-ity to make other disciples. These realities make today’s solemnity a day of praise, adoration, and responsibility. It is a fitting day to thank God for the absolutely free gift of faith that we were given in baptism. It is also a day to ask God for strength to take on the responsibility of sharing that faith with others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

PARISH AND SCHOOL COUNCIL VOTING RESULTS

We thank all of our parishioners and school par-ents who voted for the open positions for our Pas-toral and School Councils. The new members of our Pastoral Council are Christiane Garcia, Pa-tricia A. Hill, Louie Gonzaba, Jaime D. Martinez. The new members of our School Council are Yvette Troche, Carolina A. Taboada, and Chris Guerra. They will be serving three year terms and act as advisory voices to the pastor, Fr. Dennis, and the school administration.

MEMORIAL DAY PRAYER

Heavenly Father, On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the example of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops, and fill their homes and their lives with your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen

The Church Office will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 and will re-open on Tuesday, May 29 at 8:00 a.m.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Masonry, plumbing, electrical, and air condi-tioning work is continuing on the interior, as well as framing underway in the main gym ar-ea in preparation for finish materials. Water-proofing of the exterior wall and stone work should be gin soon. We think you will really want to see the drone movies of the current state of construction. Drone videos are like a virtual tour of the pro-ject both inside and out. See theses, as well as time lapse videos from the start of construction to date at: https://spaces.hightail.com/space/VrhVBgbwuB. Click on “manual sort order” and change to “sort by date added” to bring the latest videos to the upper left of the pre-views.

SECOND COLLECTION On the weekend of June 2nd and June 3rd all parishes in the Archdiocese will be con-ducting a second collection for the Priests Pension Fund. The fund supports the pen-sion for priests who have reached retire-ment age. This year there will be 69 priests receiving pensions. After faithfully serving many years in the Lord’s vineyard, the Priest Pension Fund Plan ensures that our semi and fully retired priests may have a dignified retirement. As the average age of priests continues to rise and priests, along with the general population, live longer lives, there is a greater need than ever to ensure the viability and strength of our pension. Please be generous in making a donation on the weekend of June 2nd and June 3rd to support our Archdiocesan Priest Pension Fund.

Divine Mercy Chaplet The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be recited every

First Friday of the Month” (June 1st) at 3:00 p.m. in the Church. It will be followed with the recitation of the Rosary. Come and join us.

Please call Deacon Oscar at (210) 413-1463.

ST. MATTHEW PARISH REACHING A MILESTONE!

Many of you know that this year, 2018, marks the 300th anniversary of the City of San Antonio. Did you know that this November our parish will realize its’ 50th year of existence! Also, our school was founded in 1993 and is celebrating its’ 25th anniversary this year as well. What a blessing our founding families and first pastors have given us as they laid the foundation for what has become the second largest parish in the Archdiocese of San Antonio, with over 5,000 registered families, and arguably the parish with the most ministries and organizations and certainly the largest Catholic Elementary and Middle School! We have much to be proud of. In upcoming bulletins we will be announcing future events that will be offered as we celebrate our parish’s 50th anniversary.

HOLY SPIRIT RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY PRAYER SERVICE Holy Spirit Respect Life ministry invites you to our monthly prayer service on Wednesday, June 6th at 7:00 in the church. At the conclusion of the service Eddie Perez from A Woman's Haven, a Catholic pregnancy care center, will tell us about their newly acquired property which will be the new site of their center after some renovations have been completed. Many of you are aware of this development and have expressed a desire to help in some way. After his update, he will give out his information and looks forward to your contacting him so he can meet with people one on one. We hope many of you will be able to join us that evening. For more information please call Kay Delaney @ 210-342-5334.

Breaking Open the Word Have you ever wanted to dig deeper into the Sunday readings or wanted to ask a “follow up” to the homily. Starting Sunday May 27, 2018 (Trinity Sunday) we have a new class called “Breaking Open the Word” (BOW) where we will delve more deeply into the Sunday readings and feed on the rich banquet of our Catholic Scripture tradition. We will discuss among ourselves how the tapestry of Old and New Testaments is woven into our lives. There are no requirements for this class – except having heard or read the Sunday readings for that weekend. There is no cost and no registration. We will meet every Sunday in room 106 from 10:30 to 11:15 am. Bring your bibles and/or missal. All are welcome.
