Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake

and that of the gospel will save it.” Mark 8:34-35

This passage from the Gospel of Mark follows the verses in which Jesus, who has been accurately named by Peter as the Christ, instructs his disciples that he must suffer, be rejected and be killed. When Peter protests this, Jesus tells him he is thinking not as God does but as human beings do. Then he clarifies that inherent in discipleship is the pain and suffering that goes with denying oneself and carrying one’s own cross. Jesus also tells us to lose our life. This does not mean we should be careless about our lives or not regard them as important. On the contrary, it means each one of our lives is incredibly important if we learn how to not be so controlling of our own ideals! We make plans for our lives, but God may certainly have other de-signs. The challenge is: can we lose the rigidity of what we think is best for our lives, including the best use of our talents and time, and open ourselves to a new direction that God may be asking of us to go? We continue to hear the challenging and practical advice from the Letter of James who in last week’s sec-ond reading reminded us to not treat others with partiality. Here, James challenges us to dispel the notion that faith and works are not interconnected. It does not make sense to have faith but then be apathetic to the people around us who are lacking the necessities of the body. In verse 18 of the second chapter of James he states clearly: “Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.” Doing good works involves losing ourselves, taking up our cross and as Simon of Cyrene, situated in modern day Libya, did for Jesus, helping someone else carry their cross in life. Fr. Dennis

Benefit Concert with Hallelujah Priest" Fr. Ray Kelly at Little Flower September 29 Fr. Ray Kelly will give a concert at the Basilica on Saturday, September 29, to benefit the Basilica Restora-tion Project. Reserved and VIP tickets include premium seating and admission to a post-concert wine-and-cheese reception with Fr. Ray, who will sign CDs. Tickets are available on Eventbrite or at the parish office at 824 Kentucky Ave. or by calling (210) 735-9126. Fr. Ray Kelly is a 64-year-old parish priest at St. Brigid's Church in Oldcastle, Ireland, who loves to sing. Now known as "The Hallelujah Priest," he became an internet sensation overnight in 2014: an amateur video surfaced of him singing a personalized version of Leonard Cohen’s iconic song “Hallelujah” to a young couple while he presided at their wedding. It was posted on Youtube and has since reached over 62 million views. This spring he appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent” and thoroughly wowed Simon Cowell, who declared Fr. Ray's audition to be one of his "favorite ever."
