A couple of weeks ago I wrote an article on the Spiritual Works of Mercy and how we are called as Catholics to participate in them fully and actively. I also promised that I would write another piece on the Corporal Works of Mercy - those actions we need to take in order to assist others in their bodily needs. Like the Spiritual Works, these are not something that we can regard as optional. They are absolutely essential to the living out of our Baptismal promises. A young woman named Kerry Weber dedicated her Lenten journey to the Corporal Works just a few years ago. Each week she would place particular emphasis on one and do her best to make a difference in someone’s life during that week. She even wrote a book about it entitled “Mercy in the City”. Lent is just one week away. How can you develop (or continue) a habit of living the Corporal Works in your life? The Corporal Works of Mercy 1. Feed the Hungry In Sioux Falls we have the Banquet and the Good Shepherd Center operating feeding ministries and they are always looking for more volunteers. How could you help? You could also purchase or prepare a meal for a hungry person. 2. Give Drink to the Thirsty In most of the United Stated water is easily accessible. Many people work outside in the summer and need to drink a lot of water. The next time you drive by a worksite could you stop and offer water to the workers? Also, be sure that your children are getting plenty of water (not pop and energy drinks). 3. Clothe the Naked Take a day (or more) and go through your closets at home. Are there items that you do not wear or could easily do with- out? Donate those to the St. Vincent DePaul Society. 4. Give Shelter to the Homeless The Bishop Dudley Hospitality House does a great job of sheltering the homeless but they are always looking for more volunteers - how can you help? 5. Visit the Sick Many people in nursing homes, hospitals, or the home- bound would treasure a visit from you! Who could you spend some time with? 6. Ransom the Captive People in jail or prison are often the loneliest people around. Many of them get no visits or contact from the “outside” world. Consider visiting a prison through the M2, W2, or P2 programs. 7. Bury the Dead Attending funerals and being present to those who are mourning a loss are excellent ways to “bury the dead”. My uncle once dug the grave for his sister’s daughter who had died suddenly in the wintertime. The cemetery had a pol- icy against digging graves in the winter so he spent the night before the funeral taking care of it for them.

CATHOLIC FAMILY SHARING APPEAL 2016. Today we collect pledge cards for the Catholic Family Sharing Appeal. This is an opportunity for us to unite with all Catholics in the diocese to share our blessings and to show our concern for one another. Every gift, regardless of the size, is important to the success of CFSA and the many ministries that it supports.

If you did not bring yours this week, please fill it out and return it as soon as possible. We need participation from every-one to support the many works of our diocesan church. If you cannot participate financially, fill out your card and offer a prayer for the success of CFSA. Our goal is 100% participation through time, talent and treasure. Again, any amount raised above the goal will stay in the parish. To those who returned their cards, thank you for your generous response!

The Lenten daily reflections from our St. Michael School teachers and staff have been mailed to your home!! If you do not receive yours, stop by the office and pick one up to use with your daily prayers and reflections.

Jesus and the Gospel Gospel means “Good News,” yet many people think of Christianity as neither good nor as news-worthy, but instead as boring advice and rules we have to follow. The truth is, following Jesus and living His Gospel makes life an adventure, in which we see everything differently because of

Him! Attend a free diocesan workshop at Christ the King Parish on Sat., Feb. 13 from 9:30-11:30am to dis-cover how Jesus Christ desires to transform your life and how to share that Good News with others.

Catholic Relief Services RICE BOWL Our Parish will be participating in the CRS Rice Bowl Lenten program as a way to encounter Jesus through

others. Please be sure to take one home and use the easy and fun resources to deepen your family’s Lenten experience. Your prayers, fasting and alms-giving will help CRS continue to provide life-saving assistance around the world. Pick-up your Rice Bowl after Mass Today!
