The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four reasons for
the Incarnation, why God became man in Jesus Christ. The
third reason is “to be our model of holiness.” All of Jesus’
words and actions model for us what we ought to do. He also
shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism ought to re-
mind us of our own baptism and of the importance of baptism
in the Christian life.
The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity.
When we are baptized, we stand in solidarity with Christ,
bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims
our adoption into the family of God. “‘This is my beloved son
[this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased.’”
And the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit’s
grace and power to continue Christ’s mission on earth. We
received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to
dwell within us through sanctifying grace. We can — and
should — invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and
consider them in our own lives.
Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand years in
the past? Or do you see him as someone who can be encoun-
tered here and now? Ask yourself where you find your sense of
dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in success, social
status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to rest in being a
beloved child of God? Remember, baptism gives us a call and
a charge to change the world. Do you pray for the Holy Spirit
to guide you? Or are you so focused on your own life that you
miss the mission? This week, let’s do as Jesus did. Let’s live in
our baptism!
BAPTISMAL PREPARATION
If you are a registered member of St. Michael’s Parish and are
expecting a child in the near future, please plan to attend the Bap-
tismal Preparation Program in our parish. Since there are so
many decisions to make concerning baptizing a child – these
should not be made in haste. Our Baptismal Preparation Program
will help you to make decisions and preparations in a relaxed and
timely way. Parents are urged to contact the parish office at least
four months before the birth of their baby to discuss baptismal
plans. Parents and Sponsors (Godparents) are required to attend
instruction before their child is baptized. Please call Bill Bowden
at 231-5120, ext 4.
The Annual Respect for Life Mass will be
celebrated on Saturday, January 18th
at 9:00 am in the Cathedral of SS. Pe-
ter & Paul in Providence. Bishop Tho-
mas J. Tobin will be the main celebrant
and Rev. Nathan J. Ricci, Assistant
Chancellor, will be the homilist for the Mass. A reception with
refreshments will follow the Mass in Cathedral Hall. The im-
age of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be on the altar for venera-
tion during Mass. Everyone is invited to attend. Please let us
know if you are attending the reception following the Mass,
call 278-2518 or email: [email protected].
SIGN OF PEACE
During this season of colds, and flu, if you are not feeling well a
polite nod and saying ‘The peace of the Lord be with you’, is an
appropriate gesture at the Sign of Peace.

“FROM STRESS TO PEACE”
Day of Reflection
Saturday, January 25, 2020
There is no person who does not experience
stress in the different areas of life. This day of
prayer will focus on the process needed to move out of the whirl-
wind of stress into the realm of peace. It will begin with a defini-
tion of “stress” and the levels of stress; and will continue with peo-
ple stress, life-changing stress and spiritual stress. Each session
will end with suggested coping mechanisms and, of course,
prayer… a clenched fist then opens to an open hand able to give,
receive and share.
10:00am – 4:00pm (Registration begins at 9:15am)
Registration deadline: January 18th, 2020
Lunch included in the program
Suggested Donation: $45 per person
PLANNING A WEDDING?
Marriage has been raised by Christ
to the dignity of a sacrament.
To be married in the Catholic Church means far
more than to have the wedding ceremony in a church building.
To be married in the presence of God’s people means a man and
a woman are joined together in a lasting bond of love.
If you have become engaged recently and are plan-
ning a wedding at St. Michael’s, you should contact the par-
ish office as soon as possible. Wedding plans should be made
about one year in advance.
Today the Christmas season ends. Our Scripture for
today takes us beyond the childhood of Jesus to his bap-
tism by John the Baptist. When Jesus accepted baptism
by John, God showed that he was pleased, and a voice
announced that Jesus was God’s own Son. When we
were baptized in Jesus’ name, our sins were forgiven
and we received the Holy Spirit and were made children
of God. After Jesus’ baptism, he began his public minis-
try. After our Baptism, we are to live the life of a Chris-
tian by loving God and all people as Jesus did.
