Religious Education

St Michael’s is a Church of England Primary Schooland as such we teach Religious Education using acombination of the Bolton LA and ManchesterDiocese Agreed Syllabus for RE. The syllabus isbroadly Christian, but also promotes learning andunderstanding about other major world religions, including Islam, Judaism and Hinduism.

We believe that Religious Education is anexcellent subject for learning about the valuesand practices of people all around the world. Itteaches about diversity, belief and culture, andfosters tolerance, respect and empathy.

EnglishEnglish skills are developed throughout the curriculum, covering all elements of speaking, listening, reading andwriting.

Our school provides an environment which is rich inlanguage – both verbal and written.

Children are encouraged to develop their spoken Englishskills using a range of strategies which then feed directly intotheir written work and responses.

An enjoyment and love of reading is promoted throughoutschool with daily teaching, reading opportunities andactivities, class reading areas and visits to our school library.Reading is an essential skill that all children need tomaster quickly and your support at home todevelop a love of books and confident readingis much appreciated.

Maths Daily Maths teaching and learning is focused ondemonstrating to our children that Maths is meaningful andhas a purpose in their everyday lives - from telling the time tospending money in a shop.

Children are taught to engage with numbers and developconfidence when completing calculations andwhen solving problems.

Mathematical skills are appliedthroughout the day and acrossthe curriculum usingproblems and challengesthat the children need to

find answersto.

Due to the nature of our thematic learning, elements of REoften take place above and beyond specific RE lessons. Each term we have a designated RE day throughout school. This is a key feature of our school and is underpinned by ourschool ethos and mission statement.

Our aim to is to enable children to be confident andcomfortable in their own faith (or non) and knowledgeableand respectful of other faiths. We work with the children inclass, at breaks and during lunchtimes to develop respect, tolerance and patience for others. A strong emphasis isplaced on understanding and fairness to enable our childrento grow in their relationships with others and to appreciatethe importance of peace.

“Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of justice”

Martin Luther King

Any parent with queries relating to RE and/or Worship areadvised to speak to the Head teacher in the first instance.

During 2019-2020 our school provision related to Artand Design is being enhanced to develop this key

area of learning and as part of our Artsmark Awardjourney. Linked to this the governors are working

towards providing a bespoke Creative Studio within theschool. Whilst the work for this designated teaching spaceis taking place, the hall-studio will be used to enablegroups of children to learn new skills and developexisting ones led by those members of our staff teamwith particular creative, artisticand design-technologyskills.

PE & Sporting ActivitiesAll classes take part in physical activity every day withallocated PE lessons also planned weekly.

We employ PE Coaches from Rees Sport Limited who workwith the children and staff in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 andYear 2 each week. The coaches teach the class for onesession weekly which is then followed up by a furthersession taught by the class staff.

Our KS2 children (Year 3, 4, 5 and 6) have weekly PE taughtby Mr M Hulton, our KS2 PE curriculum team leader. Heteaches the class for one afternoon session which is thenfollowed up by a further afternoon session taught by theclass staff.

Physical Education lessons enable pupils to develop awide variety of skills in situations suitable for theirstage of development.

Our school teams take part in a broad range of sportingactivities during the year, both during school time andbeyond the school day. Their success is renowned withinBolton and beyond! During the last twelve years we havebeen highly successful in athletic, cricket and hockey

Swimming

During 2019-2020 all children in Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6will have a two week intensive block of swimming lessons. These are being fully funded by the school.

Being able to swim is an important life-skill.

In Year 6 children are expected to meet the NationalCurriculum requirements for swimming and water

safety:

• swim competently, confidently and proficientlyover a distance of at least 25 metres

• use a range of strokes effectively

• perform safe self-rescue in differentwater-based situations

In order to meet these requirementsthere is an expectation that parents willsupport the school funded swimminglessons by taking their children forswimming lessons outside of school.

12 13

Computing Computing is taught as a discrete subject and is also usedas a tool to enhance learning across the curriculum.

Our children begin using computers and programmabletoys in Nursery and progress to producing their ownpower point presentations and digital story tellingsessions in Key Stage Two.

As our children become competent usingcomputers they are encouraged to use the internetto research and gather information. School staffonly use internet sites protected by Bolton LocalAuthority but older children will obviously becapable of accessing other sites. E-Safety isessential and school and home need to worktogether to guide and teach children to managerisk and be safe when using the internet.

Attendance Good attendance is directly linked to progress andachievement. Children who have poor attendance or arrivelate miss out on lessons (full or in part) and do not thereforehave the same opportunity to make progress or achieve thebest outcomes.

The staff and governors at St Michael’s CEP Schoolconstantly promote educational success by ensuring ourprovision is exciting, varied and motivating.

The head teacher has a responsibility to ensure that everypupil has the highest attendance possible in order to enableevery child to flourish and achieve his/her potential.

Please help us by ensuring your child is in school every day, unless they are genuinely ill or there are significantcircumstances. If your child is not in school please ring theschool office to explain his/her absence.

Road SafetyParents are responsible for their children’s safety travellingto and from school.

All St Michael’s CEP pupils have been provided with a freehigh visibility jacket to wear as they travel to school. Thehigh visibility jackets are part of our school uniform andshould be worn each day by ALL pupils. Replacementjackets can be purchased from the school office if needed.

Families must ensure that if they are crossing Green Lane, they do so using the Lollipop Patrol and the zebra crossingthat is situated near the main school pedestrian accesspaths.

The example set by adults when bringing and collectingchildren from school is vital. Please therefore always crossGreen Lane on the zebra crossing with the Lollipop Patroland do not cross further up or in between vehicles waitingfor the traffic lights. If a child sees an adult crossing in sucha way it can lead to them doing the same subsequently.

Car ParkingTraffic congestion on and around Green Lane can be aproblem, especially at the beginning and end of the schoolday. It is recommended that children and parents walk toschool, if this is possible, to ease the congestion and to keepour children active.

The main parking and drop-off zone is beyond the school site, further up Green Lane.If it is absolutely necessary to travel toschool in a car, the access drive-way into school must alwaysbe kept clear at all times for deliveries and emergencyvehicles. The school car park is for staff only.

The car park at the private nursery (Bright Futures) at thebottom of Green Lane is NOT to be used by parents droppingoff or collecting children from St Michael’s CEP. Unfortunatelywe are no longer able to use the Railway Club car park onGreen Lane. Please do not park in or across the entrance toeither of these private car parks. Thank you for your supportwith parking safely for the maximum safety of our pupils andfamilies and respectfully for our neighbours and other road users. 2726
