ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH GEORGIAVILLE, RI

As we march through Lent, it can be easy to think it's all about

sacrifice. No chocolate, no alcohol, no meat on Fridays. Yet here,

only in the second week of Lent, we have the story of the trans-

figuration. This reading reminds us of the "why" behind what we

do. We don't fast from dessert to lose weight. We don't donate

money or serve others because it's merely a nice thing to do. Lent

is about transformation!

Peter, James, and John trudged up the mountainside behind Jesus.

This must have been a difficult hike, because when they reached

the top, "Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep."

Despite our best efforts, perhaps we, too, can be asleep to the

deeper meaning of the Lenten season. Jesus is transfigured while

they slumber, but eventually they become "fully awake, [and]

they saw his glory and the two men standing with him."

This is no small thing! The disciples witness Jesus in his divine

splendor and see the miraculous apparitions of Moses and Elijah.

The entire mountain becomes a spiritual breakthrough. "A cloud

came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened

when they entered the cloud." These symbols are present in the

Old Testament. They are present on Mount Sinai when Moses

prayed alone and received the 10 Commandments. Elijah had a

similar experience when he prayed alone before God. But here are

ordinary men, former fishermen, who have been drawn up into an

adventure beyond their wildest expectations. Jesus is the Christ,

the Messiah, the fulfillment of all that came before. But Christian-

ity is not the religion of the elite, where only the select few are

allowed to participate. We are all invited into spiritual transforma-

tion. Lent is a privileged time for this!

2019 CATHOLIC CHARITY APPEAL

Next weekend, Jim Jahnz, the emergency

services coordinator for the Diocese of Provi-

dence, will speak at all masses. He will be

sharing information with us about Emmanuel

House and the Keep the Heat On program.

These are just two of the many Diocesan programs that depend on

donations to the Annual Catholic Charity Fund Appeal.

If you have not yet had a chance to respond to the Catholic Charity

Appeal mailing from Bishop Tobin with your 2019 donation, we

will be having an in-pew solicitation opportunity next weekend.

Donation envelopes will be available in the pews. You may take an

envelope and mail it directly to Catholic Charity or return it to the

collection basket. All gifts, regardless of size, help to make a differ-

ence in the lives of so many individuals. Thank you for your sacrifi-

cial help and support.

WINTER WEATHER

Please remember our parish policy that says:

If school is canceled or delayed in Smithfield because of

inclement weather, Morning Mass at 7 AM is cancelled.

If the Mass had a special intention, it will be rescheduled.

John 21:17

Why do we Fast during Lent?

Fasting is a spiritual practice and discipline.

The aim is to help us focus on God. By lim-

iting our intake of food, we exercise self-control and discipline

over our bodies. Experiencing physical hunger reminds us of

our utter dependence on God as well as puts us in solidarity

with those for whom hunger is not a choice but a fact of life.

Fasting does not have to be only about food, it can be about

habits and practices that distract us from God and others,

such as too much time at work or on social media.
