TODAY IS THE FEAST OF THE HOLY CROSS AND WE SING

“To Your Cross, O Master, we bow in veneration And we glorify your Holy Resurrection”

Out of love for us using the Cross as a pen, You signed our decree of pardon with the Royal Crimson of Your Precious Blood. For, through the Cross, You have already granted us the joy of the Kingdom; Because through the Cross, we have passed to unending joy and are raised from earth to heaven, since the armies of hell are shattered

and the curse of old are utterly destroyed. So, let all the trees of the forest dance and sing as they look upon their brother tree - The Cross of Christ!

1. Parish Membership - We welcome all our visitors and guests who worship at St. Nicholas. We invite families and individuals who wish to become members to register with us by calling the Church Office at 273-6752 via e-mail: office@cerkva.com, or speaking with Fr. Mikhail.

2. Meetings: Our Mother of Perpetual Help – meeting on Mon., Mar. 16 after Akathist.

3. Palm Sunday Bazaar - April 5, 2020 from 12-3pm. Please mark your calendar and plan to help us prepare for the Bazaar during the week before the Bazaar.

4. Joseph's House and Shelter – this winter has a new set of needs for the guests that come into the shelter on a daily basis. There is a need for men’s and women’s underwear, socks, dryer sheets, toiletries along with the usual cold weather articles If you are willing to help, please drop items in the box marked Joseph’s House in the vestibule and they will be delivered.

5. Presanctified Gift Liturgy – has been celebrated on Wednesdays in Ukrainian and on Fridays in English. Please make all efforts to come. Delicious homemade soup and bread will be served after the English Presanctified Gift Liturgy during Lent.

6. Lenten Memorial Services "Sorokousty – Sunday - at 12:30 p.m. Please join us in prayers and give Fr. Mikhail the names of those whom you wish to remember during the service.

7. Liturgy of St. Basil the Great - will be celebrated every Sunday during the Great Fast. Except for some minor differences, it is the same as the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The difference lies in the silent prayers, which add about 15 minutes to the Liturgy. The chants sung by the Cantor are more involved to cover what otherwise would be an extended period of silence.

8. Sviato Shevchenka - on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the Ukrainian American Cultural Center in Watervliet. Please plan to attend and support our Ukrainian Capital District community.

"Those who love me will keep my word, and my Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them" (John 14:23).

5. You shall not kill.

Have I caused the harm, injury or death of anyone, including the unborn? Have I wished my own or anyone else's harm or death? Have I abused my health or the health of others by sinful and intemperate living (e.g. drugs, alcohol, etc.)? Have I given way to destructive anger or hatred? Have I failed to forgive anyone or harbored evil thoughts against them? Have I been cruel to anyone?

6 and 9. You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not covet your neighbor's wife.

Have I committed any sin of lust, alone or with others? Have I caused others to commit impure acts? Have I sinned by giving way to impure thoughts, words or conversations? Have I read immoral books or magazines, or delighted in obscenity of any kind? Have I associated with bad company or frequented places of ill- repute? Do I maintain modesty and decency in dress?

7 and 10. You shall not steal.

You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor's.

Have I taken or kept anything that was not mine? Have I cheated anyone? Have I caused others to steal or cheat? Have I tried to find the owners of lost things I have found? Have I damaged or destroyed anything that belonged to another? Have I defrauded anyone of their rightful wages? Have I paid my debts? Have I worked honestly and conscientiously for my wages? Did I spend beyond my means? Do I give alms according to my capacity? Have I looked with envy, jealousy or hatred on the possessions, talents, or achievements of others? Have I desired the downfall of others out of evil intent that I might benefit? Have I grieved the fact that God has bestowed greater blessing on others than on me?

8. You shall not bear false witness.

Have I given false testimony against anyone? Have I spoken evil, told lies, or spread rumors about anyone? Have I unjustly accused someone? Have I disclosed to anyone the sins or faults of another? Have I betrayed the confidence of another? Have I made careless statements or done anything else to harm the good name and reputation of another person? Have I engaged in idle gossip (discussing that which is doubtful as if it were true), hearsay and back-biting?

The Beatitudes are a key source for Christian living because they not only forbid various actions (as

the Ten Commandments do), but present a dynamic vision for those who have handed over their

lives to God in the baptismal font

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Do I really believe that all is God's and from God? Do I hand my life over to Him? Do I share the earth's goods with others, especially those in need? Do I turn to God and His word for my opinions and values? Do I acknowledge my intellectual poverty before God, accepting His wisdom and truth, or am I an idolater of my own views? Do I lust after wealth, power, and authority? Am I possessive, self-seeking, self-satisfied, self-righteous?

Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Do I lament people's suffering? Am I truly concerned — without bitterness — about troubles in Church and society? Do I empathize with those suffering in my family, my place of work, my school? Do I weep over my own sinfulness? Do I show compassion towards the lowly, the addicted, the selfish, the lustful, the marginalized — without being judgmental? Do I regret the failings of others, or do I in fact mock and gloat over that which a true Christian can only mourn?

2. Хресту Твоєму, поклоняємось, Владико, І святеє Воскресіння Твоє славим 3. 3 любові до нас, Вживаючи Хрест як перо, ти підписав наказ прощення царською багряною фарбою, cвоєю дорогоцінною кров'ю. Через Хрест Ти дарував нам радість Царства, через Хрест ми перейшли до безсмертної радості і стали піднесені із землі до неба, через хрест армія пекла проклята І знищенна зовсім. Нехай усі дерева лісу танцюють та співають, споглядаючи на свого брата, Дерево-Хрест Христа

5. Сорокоусти – відправи за померлих членів наших родин відправлятимемо у неділі, починаючи із неділі 1-го березня. Просимо подати імена членів родин, щоб виголосити їх в часі сорокоустних відправ.

6. Збори Церковних Комітетів та Організацій: Наша Мати Неустанної Помочі – у пон.16 березня о 11:00 год дня у церкві.

7. Відвідини - деякі члени нашої парохії відсутні у Церкві через недомагання, хворобу, чи перебування у старечому домі. Однак не так хвороба чи старість, а самотність та одинокість приносять їм страждання та смуток. Наші відвідини, телефонний дзвінок, чи сердечний лист матимуть цілющий ефект. Отож приносім жертву приємну для Господа.

8. Миска Рижу – традиційно із початком посту ми розпочинаємо збірку„Миска Рижу”. Зібрані кошти будуть направлені для допомоги бідним дітям по цілому світі. Просимо вас внести свою пожертву на цю благочинну ціль.

9. Передвеликодний Базар – Церква Св. Отця Миколая та 99-й Відділ Союзу Українок влаштовують Базар у Неділю 5-го квітня від 12 до 3 год. по полудні у церковній залі. Запрошуємо усіх на смачні українські страви, виставки та речі.

10. Завіщання: Пам’ятайте про вашу парафіяльну Церкву Св. о. Миколая у вашому заповіті.

11. Шевченківське Свято– Українська Школа запрошує українську громаду на традиційний річний концерт присвячений Тарасу Шевченку у неділю 15-го березня в Українському Клубі м. Вотервліт. Підтримаймо наших дітей та Українську Школу.

12. Писання Писанок з Українською Школою – 28 березня, з 10:00 - 4 по полудні довгоочікуваний клас писанкарства в церковному залі церкви Св. Миколая у Вотервліт. Для учнів школи клас безкоштовний. Для гостей школи - 25$ з особи. Після завершення класу вас чекають смачні вареники! Резервація місць: ukrschoolalbany@gmail.com.

13. Хрещення – традиційно уділяється у неділю близько 40 днів після народження дитини. Диякон або священник матимуть підготовчі класи перед хрещенням для батьків та хресних батьків. Присутність дідів та бабців не є обов’яковою. Батьки мусять бути активними парофіянами та зареєстрованими у парофії. Традиційно для дітей вибирають ім’я святого чи святої. Один з спонсорів мусить бути практикуючим Католиком, котрий бере участь у Святих Тайнах та підтримує парофію. Ця інформація має бути підтвердженна парохом.

Troparion (7): By Your cross You destroyed death;* You opened Paradise to the thief;* You changed the lamentation of the myrrh-bearers to joy,* and charged the apostles to

proclaim* that You are risen, O Christ our God,* offering great mercy to the world.

Troparion (1): Save your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.* Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies,* and protect Your community by Your cross.

+ Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, Now and for ever and ever: Amen.

Kontakion (Tone 7): No longer does the flaming sword guard the gate of Eden;* the tree of the Cross has quenched its flames gloriously.* The sting of death and the victory of Hades are banished,* and You, O my Saviour, came and called to those in Hades: “Return again to Paradise!”

Instead of “Holy God”: To Your Cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy Resurrection.

Prokeimenon (6): Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. verse: Unto You I will cry, O Lord my God, lest Your turn from me in silence.

Reading of the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews Epistle (Hebrews 4:14-5:6): Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has similarly been tested in every way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help. Every high priest is taken from among men and made their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this reason, must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to him: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”; just as he says in another place: “You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Alleluia (6): Remember Your congregation which You acquired from the beginning. verse: But God is our king before the ages; He has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.

Gospel: (Mark 8:34-9,1): At that time, He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life? Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” He also said to them, “Amen, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come in power.”

Instead of “It is truly...”: In you, O Full of Grace, all creation rejoices: the angelic ranks and all the human race. Sanctified temple and spiritual paradise, virgins’ pride and boast, from whom God is made flesh and became a little Child; and He who is our God before all ages, He made your womb a throne, and He made it wider that all the heavens. In you, O Full of Grace, all creation rejoices. Glory be to you.

Communion Verse: Let the light of Your countenance O Lord, shine upon us. Alleluia (x3)

До Євреїв послання св. апостола Павла читання : (Євр4,14-5,6) : Браття, мавши, отже, великого архиерея, що вже пройшов небо, Ісуса, Божого Сина, тримаймося твердо віровизнання. Бо ми не маємо такого архиерея, який не міг би співчувати нашим недугам: він же ж зазнав усього, подібно як ми, крім гріха. Приступім, отже, з довір'ям до престолу благодаті, щоб отримати милість і знайти благодать на своєчасну поміч. Кожен бо архиєрей, узятий з-поміж людей, настановляється для людей у справах Божих, щоб приносив дари та жертви за гріхи; що може співчувати нетямущим та введеним в оману, бо й сам він неміччю охоплений, і тому повинен так за людей, як і за себе самого приносити жертви за гріхи. Чести ж цієї ніхто не бере сам собі, лише той, хто покликаний Богом, як Арон. Так і Христос не сам собі присвоїв славу стати архиєреєм, вона бо від того, який до нього мовив: "Син мій єси, я сьогодні породив тебе." Як і на іншому місці каже: "Ти - священик навіки за чином Мел- хиседека."

Алилуя (8). Пом'яни громаду Свою, яку Ти придбав Тобі здавна. (Пс 73,2). Стих: Бог же Цар наш предвічний, вчинив спасіння посеред землі.

Євангеліє: (Мр 8,34-9,1) : Ісус , прикликавши народ разом із своїми учнями, сказав їм: "Коли хтось хоче йти за мною, хай зречеться себе самого, візьме на себе хрест свій і йде слідом за мною. Бо хто хоче спасти свою душу мене ради та Євангелія, той її спасе. Що бо людина може дати взамін за власну душу? Хто, отже, буде соромитися мене й моїх слів перед цим родом перелюбним та грішним, того посоромиться і Син Чоловічий, коли прийде у славі Отця свого з святими ангелами." І сказав їм: "Істинно кажу вам: Є деякі з отут присутніх, що не зазнають смерти, аж поки не вздріють Царства Божого, що прийде у могутності."

Замість Достойно: Тобою радується, Благодатная, всяка твар, ангельський собор і чоловічеський рід, освященний храме і раю словесний, дівственна похвало, що із неї Бог воплотився і младенцем став – перед віками сущий Бог наш. Лоно бо твоє престолом сотворив і утробу твою просторішою небес учинив. Тобою радується, Благодатная, всяка твар, слава тобі.
