Sunday, 24 June 2018 The Nativity of St John The Baptist Year B

From the Dean’s Desk

Dear Friends,

We take a little diversion today as our liturgy centres on the birth of St John the Baptist, rather than that of the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time. So great a figure is John the Baptist that we make room for him on a Sunday.

Liturgically, we celebrate the births of only three people: Jesus (December 25th), Mary (September 8th) and John the Baptist (June 24th). All other liturgical celebrations recall the day of the saint’s death or some other significant date in their lives. There is a connection between the lives of these three people. They make up a significant part of the story of salvation history. Luke links the lives of these people in the early part of his Gospel. The birth of John the Baptist is foretold [Luke 1:5-25]; Mary receives and accepts the news of her conception of Jesus [Luke 1:26-38]; she then goes to be with her cousin Elizabeth to help her in her advanced years [Luke 1:39-45]; the birth and circumcision of John is related [Luke 1:57-66], and finally the birth of Jesus is told [Luke 2:1-20]. All this forms a grand scenario of the mysterious and majestic ways in which God has entered into our human story.

This mysterious action is again taken up in today’s liturgy. Isaiah recalls the calling of the prophet from the days prior to his birth [49:1-6]. It speaks of a predestined calling of the prophet from the womb. ‘The Lord called me before I was born, from my mother’s womb he pronounced my name’ [49:1]. What follows can be easily seen as a description of the mission and ministry of John the Baptist: ‘He made my mouth a sharp sword…he made me into a sharpened arrow…you are my chosen servant’ [49:2-4]. How aptly John fits this description as we see him confronting the might of Herod over the matter of his marriage to his brother Philip’s wife, Herodias. This led to his imprisonment and eventual beheading [Mark 6:17-29], which is celebrated liturgically on August 29th.

Today’s Gospel treats of the mysterious way in which John’s birth comes about [Luke 1:57-66.80]. His mother, although beyond the age of childbearing conceives. His father Zechariah is struck dumb when he receives the message of Gabriel, due to his doubting the essence of this message. The people even though they share in the joy of John’s birth are bewildered that his mother wishes to call him John as no one in her family has such a name. Zechariah’s speech returns once he reinforces his wife’s choice of name for the child. All are astonished saying, ‘what will this child turn out to be?’ Luke tells us that the child grows well in the site of God. The next we hear of John is during his ministry and at the baptism of Jesus.

The life of John always points to the person of Jesus. This is his life’s mission and he is faithful to it right up till the end, when he witnesses to Jesus through his martyrdom. As we celebrate his birth, it allows us to reach into the mysterious and often unexplained ways in which God acts in our lives and in our world. It challenges us to not be perturbed by God’s ways but to in fact, through faith and obedience, work with God in order to bring about God’s intended reality. In celebrating John’s birth today we are reminded that our mission too is to point to the life of Jesus through our words and most especially through our deeds.
