Commodore’s Report:

Spring came early and we have made the most of it! S.F. Alman presented a fabu-lous style show, “Sailing Into Summer,” at our March meeting. Ferrell Alman moder-ated the show which featured none other than the men of our GYC Board, their

spouses, and other GYC members wearing Spring and Summer fashions. Wine and cheese was enjoyed by members and their spouses during the show. It proved to be a fun evening for all, and it was especially nice that many members could attend the evening meeting who cannot attend our luncheons. Hostesses for our meeting were Betty Brown, Marge Montgomery, and Wilda Switzer. On Saturday, March 31st, very enthuaistic children came to have, “Breakfast with the Easter Bunny”, and hunt Easter eggs. All ages participated and many eggs were found including gold-en eggs which were redeemed for prizes. The children enjoyed breakfast and various activities while the eggs were being hid-den. Many thanks to Wilda Switzer who was the chairman of the event and to all of her helpers! In April our luncheon will be held on April 25th. Every-one will benefit from hearing our speaker, Frank Baskett from the Harrison County Sheriff ’s Department. He will be speak-ing about “Safety in the Home.” If you are not on the perma-nent reservation list, please call Camille Williams by Monday noon before the Wednesday luncheon. Ladies Auxiliary Happenings:

Say goodbye to winter because spring is here and Boating season has arrived!! The GYC hosted its first Regatta of the year, the Alfonso Sutter. It was a great success and many thanks to Sam Vasquez and his Race Committee. We had great weather and managed to sail 10 races.

It has been a very active March at the club starting with Asian Night followed by St. Patty’s Day kick-off party. The Entertainment and House Committee went over the top with these events. Hats off to the kitchen staff for some awesome sushi for Asian Night. St. Patrick’s Kick-Off par-ty was very well attended and a good time. This kitchen served well over 150 and the food was delicious. As I write this article we are approaching the Ladies Auxiliary sail into summer fashion show. I would like to thank Ferrell and Rose Alman for their support and contributions to this show. I would personally like to thank Ferrell for not embarrassing me too much.

Our membership drive has been a huge success with only a few remaining spots available, so please hurry and get those applications turned in to the office. Thank you Dick-ie Dunaway, Committee Members for the continuous sup-port numerous hours and dedication to the club during this drive. Getting new members to join the GYC is very important however, retention is even more important. Our club offers so much in the way of amenities, enter-tainment and boating. The Log Sheet and e-logs are great sources to be informed. If you have not given your email address to the office yet please do so. These emails contain Friday night dinner menu as well as upcoming events.

By now, most of you have seen this years “Log Sheet.” We have changed the format and quality of pictures in order to give you a better product. Thank you Laura Hansen and Sam Vasquez for all your hard work setting up and producing these publications.

Please mark your calendar for all the upcoming events at the club. Your Entertainment, Junior, Sailing and Power-boat Committee’s have worked tirelessly to fill up the cal-endar for April. It is shaping up to be a fun filled April. See you at the Club.

GYC Safety Tip: Safety – Whose Responsibility? At sea, the Captain is held accountable for the safety of his vessel and crew. I encourage everyone to be a good “Captain” while in port as well. Involve your crew (Family, Friends and Coworkers) in eliminating the hazards of the varied activities we share. As Sam says “If your ship gets hit by a meteor while sailing – You should have been looking up.” GYC Maintenance Manager - Jay Funderburk

SWIM TEAM PRACTICE will focus on stroke instruction and improvement, endurance, turns and starts. Practice attendance of at least 2x’s weekly is recommended to master skills. If the coach or parent feels a child needs additional stroke work, additional practice will be provided. Our goal is for each child to learn op-timal swim skills. Discipline will be strictly enforced. If a child is disruptive during practice, a timeout discipline will be enforced. Safety for all children is our main concern. Parents are required to pick up children after practice. Coaches are not responsible for children after practice. If you need a practice time after 5:00, please contact Christine.PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND AND ASSIST WITH VARIOUS JOBS DURING SWIM MEETS. The coaches will contact you prior to meets to discuss job options. The meets

will run more smoothly with your assistance.

If possible, please notify one of the coaches if your child is unable to attend a meet so we will not schedule them on a relay team. The meets are held on Tuesday evenings at approximately 4:30 and generally last 3 hours. If your child has transportation problems, please notify on of the coaches to assist you and your child with this need. Participation in the meets is encouraged but not man-datory. Each child is encouraged to swim a variety of strokes. This is to enhance individual improvement and team competitiveness. We would appreciate parental support and encouragement when a child is not swimming his or her favorite stroke or strongest stroke. We must accumulate times on each child’s individual strokes prior to Championships.

Managerial Functions and ResponsibilityGulfport Yacht Club Rules, revised 2011

Last month, the Bylaws and Rules Committee provided you with a brief summary of the club rules pertaining to minors use and presence in the Chart Room. This month, the en-forcement of that rule and other rules shall be discussed.

Club Rules, section XI, 3, entitled “General Manager,” clothes the club general manager with the full authority and responsibility of enforcing those rules. Under that section, the manager is authorized “... to temporarily suspend Club privileges of members and their dependents for violating Club rules, pending action by the Governing Board ...” and “... may also direct that guests and visitors leave the premises for violating Club rules.” That same power is reserved unto the Commodore, Vice Commodore, or Rear Commodore by Club Rules, Section III, 3, entitled “General Conduct.”

Section III does not limit the exercise of the suspension au-thority to acts of minors. In subsection 5, it itemizes certain acts that are club “no-nos” and could result in suspension of club privileges. Those specifically named are the following: (a) theft while on club property; (b) vandalism or destruc-tion of club property and/or private property which is on club property; (c) speeding on club property; (d) acts en-dangering the safety of others; (e) littering of club property; (f) violation of club rules; (g) fighting; (h) inappropriate conduct or obscene language on club property, or a vessel moored on club property, or on the race course during a regatta; (i) the misuse of charge privileges; (j) the misuse of docks/piers privileges; (k) the violation of club rules relative to the use of club owned boats; (l) the loitering on club prop-erty after the hours the club is closed; (m) and the bringing of food/beverages on club property without the permission of the general manager.

Some of these violations are obvious while others are ques-tionable and need further clarification. However, the pur-pose here is not to discuss or debate the merits of the viola-tions but is to inform you members of certain acts that could be a violation and to suggest that before you commit that act discuss it with the club manager.

The Bylaws and Rules Committee

From the Bylaws:
