St. Patricks Monthly A Newsletter from Division 2, AOH April 2017 Hello everyone, Spring is finally here. Hopefully we are past the harsh weather of winter and moving towards the days of warmth and sunshine. I'd like to start with our 71st St. Pat- rick's Ball. To say it was a wonderful night would be an under statement. You could feel the love for our Hiber- nian of the Year Jimmy Reilly. It was a cold night, so Jimmy stayed home to be safe. You could feel his pres- ence the whole evening. Thank you to everyone who could make it to make the night special. I'd also like to thank the men and women who made the night possible. Jim Killen's committee worked many hours on pulling off a special evening. Billy Weiss and his staff did a great job in tight quarters. Please feel free to join the Ball committee or any of the other committees Division 2. Your input and participation are want- ed and needed. Just one more thing to mention about the Ball, I want to compliment the entire Reilly family. Jimmy is a lucky man to be surrounded by such love and respect. At our February meeting, the junior girls explored the Irish roots of some US presidents in honor of President's Day. We also prepared St Patrick's Day cards for residents of a local nursing home. The girls also dis-cussed different ways they might reach out to the retired sisters at the Sisters of St. Dominic's Motherhouse in Amityville. We were also happy to welcome our newest member, Enya O’hehir. We had a few members march in the East Islip Parade. We were very proud of their effort on a cold blustery day. The girls looks for-ward to our next meeting on March 24 at 7:30 PM. In our motto,

CELEBRATING BROTHER JIMMY REILLY.

As we mourn the loss of Jimmy, let us think of the joyous reunion in Heaven on March 17th when Jimmy met his par-

ents and brother Pete, and the Flanagan Family: Francis, Maggie, Mike, Nellie and John; and his good friends Enda

Dodd, Brendan McDonald, Pat Sweeney, Frank Murray, Pat Shannon, Jack McKean and, of course, Saint Patrick.

The Craic must have been mighty indeed!

Jimmy came to Division 2 in 1974 already a Hibernian, on transfer from the Bronx AOH.

His SERVICE to Division 2 and Suffolk County AOH included Division offices and stints as BARTENDER and

MAITRE D par excellence. We honored him on March 11th as HIBERNIAN of the YEAR at our annual St. Patrick’s

Day Ball and are thrilled he was able to attend via Skype.

His CULINARY EXPERTISE was put to work, when he cooked for Communion Breakfasts, Corned Beef & Cabbage

and Prime Rib dinners for both Division 2 and Suffolk County.

He served in the Tara Court Major Degree Team for 40 years and was even Division 2 Santa Claus.

Jimmy epitomized our motto: Friendship, Unity & Christian Charity. His FRIENDSHIP was felt by all. He was a most

GENEROUS and CHARITABLE MEMBER who supported all of our ENDEAVORS.

No one among us can say that Jimmy Reilly offended us and no one has a bad word about Jimmy.

He was a LIKEABLE and LOVABLE CHARACTER.

Jimmy will be remembered most for his KINDNESS, GENEROSITY And GOOD HUMOUR.

Jimmy was a great ENTERTAINER and we shall always remember his rendition of “My Native Town, Drumlish”

and, of course, his signature party piece, “There’s a Hole in the Bucket.”

Unfortunately, the void he leaves in all our lives cannot be fixed by a SINGLE STRAW.

Our families have been friends for more than 40 years and my heart has a big hole in it. I will close with this poem in

his memory:

A loving nature, heart of gold.

The very best this world could hold.

Never selfish always kind.

These are the memories left behind.

We hold you close within our hearts.

And there you shall remain.

To walk with us throughout our lives.

Until we meet again.

Farewell, my friend.

Leo Murphy.

day. In short order, Brian produced a

rhythmic salute to the happy lady.

Kudos and Thanks, Brian.

Jokes and other tall tales were re-

cited by Jack Leahy, Pat Vaughn and

Leo Murphy. Billy provided a season-

al corned beef, cabbage and bangers

lunch. Kathy Mulligan and Lily Gerrity

produced the usual abundance of

desserts.

Late February weather, balmy as it was, was short-lived, and morphed into the usual erratic (some might call it insane) March weather! It certainly brings to mind the story of Tantalus, with “true” spring being elusive this year, just as the overhanging fruit was elusive to him. Of course, the first week of March felt like the Twelve Labors of Hercules to those of us with the flu or common cold! But, our big day is in one week, and we hope that good health awaits every-one. Welcome back to accomplished piper Neil McPherson, who returned to the band after a several-year hia-tus. Also, please welcome piper Renee Runyon. Renee, a very good piper, is rumored to be working on a pamphlet about beverage-consumption etiquette, while Pipe Sergeant John Henderson has been touting his home brew as a veritable “Best-in-Class.” On a more somber note, Pipe Major Eric Stein relayed the following: “Please keep Dave McKell and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Dave was a member of the Color Guard in the early to mid 1970's. He was a retired Lieutenant of Suffolk County Police Department. He was an avid poet and his work was in the local papers for many decades.” Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Eric opined about the start of the parade season: “We had a bone chilling start to St Patrick's Month. We had quite a caper in the Kings Park parade with 14 pipers and a full drum corps. Piper Renee Runyon made a splash with her Saffron United debut. Neil McPherson was back on parade after a 10 year hiatus. Saturday evening we played on stage with the icons of Irish Tradition-al music, Paddy Maloney and the Chieftains. This incredible group of musicians have been on the go for 49 years. Back in the early 80's we opened up for the Chieftains at the Hunter Mountain Celtic Festival. I remember Pipe Major Matt Close's excitement the night of the engagement.

Saffron United

Pipe Band

Matt was smoking his pipe and had a huge grin on his face at the after party. The band won the contest that weekend so we had all the glory and a huge payday. This time we got to play two num-bers on stage at the sold out 2100 seat Queens College auditorium. We had a mere seven minutes of rehears-al time with these great masters. We played a tune composed by Paddy in memory of the Irish Soldiers who defected from the US Army dur-ing the war with Mexico. These sol-diers did not want to fight fellow Cath-olics. They we quickly rounded up and hanged. ‘The March of the San Patri-cios' commemorates this incident. We also played a traditional Breton dance tune during the encore. An Dro (the Dance) is a very lively tune which had the house rocking, and many in the audience took to dancing through isles and up and through a crowded stage. John Henderson, Chuck Patterson, Tom Donovan, Bob Farrell, Ken Gilloon, Patrick McLaughin, John Ka-vanaugh II, Nicole Kavanaugh, Maureen and I had a fantastic time. On Sunday we had 15 pipers, a full drum corps and new bass drummer Ryan Zegel as we played in a slightly warmer East Islip parade. After the parade a contingent from the band headed east for the Rocky Point Grand Marshal’s Ball. So the first weekend is in the books and we have a few days rest before weekend two of March Madness.” The Metro Cup results: Piobaireachd 1st Callum Beaumont 2nd Ian K.
