Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes refer-ence to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a prepa-ration time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the full-ness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic commu-nities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of fami-ly and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British as-sault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the women of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is pre-served as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States.

First Reading — Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water (1 Kings 19:4-8). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love (Ephesians 4:30 — 5:2). Gospel — Jesus said, “I am the living bread; whoever eats this bread will live forever” (John 6:41-51).

NOVENA

CAUTION! CONSTRUCTION NOTICE!

SOCIAL JUSTICE

The Social Justice Ministry is once again collecting water for the homeless. It is greatly appreciated by those living on the streets as we get into our very hot summer months. You can leave your donations at the church when you come to Mass. Thank you!

Novena for the Legal Protection of Human Life: This nine week effort will include prayer and fasting for the intention that the change in the membership of the U.S. Supreme Court will move our nation closer to the day when every human being is protected in law and welcomed to life. The Novena will also include materials to help educate the public. It takes place from Friday, August 3 to Sep-tember 28. Individuals are urged to ign up for the Nove-na as part of the USCCB Call to Prayer at www.usccb.org/pray.

St Paul Parishioners and guests, just a friendly word of caution. In the next 30-45 days there will be construction work of the interior and exterior of our church and parish hall and parking lights. We are retrofitting/upgrading the lighting into more energy efficient fixtures. There should be no interruption or interference with our weekday and weekend Masses. The work will be done during the weekdays between the hours of 9am-5pm. St Paul’s is given this blessed opportunity to save on our monthly expenses and have an impact to our car-bon footprint on the environment. The reduction to our monthly electrical bill will greatly help our already tight budget for this year and years to come. The SMUD Complete Energy Solutions Program offers us this opportunity to upgrade our lighting fixtures. It will help save an estimate of $663 per month on our electri-cal bill, saving 5,393.50 kWh per month or $39,804 in 5 years-saving 323,610 kWh in 5 years. St Paul’s impact to our carbon footprint to the environ-ment is:

Remove 6.47 passenger vehicles from the road, Save 64,721.95 kWh which reduces our CO2 emis-

sions, and Sequester the equivalent of 95.14 acres of forest.

The overall Installation cost is $18,230.49 but with the 49% rebate offered through the program, our net pro-ject cost will be $9,363.58, the ROI or project will pay for itself in 1.18 years. We apologize in advance if there are any inconven-ience the construction work may cause. For any questions or concerns call Dale Yamamoto at 916-257-3323 Finance Council

Respect Life Gathering Saturday, August 25—St. John the Baptist, Folsom Anyone who is passionate about the pro-life cause is welcome. Saturday, August 25, St. John the Baptist Church in Folsom. Bishop Soto will celebrate the Opening Mass at 8:30am and the program will run from 10-3.

God has a special message for us. When we listen to the readings, the homily, and the prayers of the Mass, God speaks to us in a special way. We should come away from each Mass with at least on inspiration that will impact our lives in some way. We just have to pay attention and be open to what the Lord is trying to tell us. We need to talk to Gad. We speak to God through our singing, our communal responses and prayers from the depths of our hearts. During the Mass we have the opportunity to ask God for what we need, promise God that we will do what He wants us to do, and thank God for the many blessings he has bestowed upon us.
