Pastor’s Column
Month of the Rosary For better than four centuries the month of October has been celebrated in the Church as the Month of the Rosary. While being a Marian prayer in its very nature, its structure leads us to contemplate the life, mission, death, and triumph of Jesus. On May 3, 2008 Pope Benedict XVI said the following about the rosary: “When reciting the Rosary, the im-portant and meaningful moments of salvation history are re-lived. The various steps of Christ's mission are traced. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the [center] of our life, . . . through the contemplation and meditation of his holy mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. . . The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authentic way, not mechanical and superficial but profoundly, it brings, in fact, peace and reconciliation. It contains within itself the healing power of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, invoked with faith and love at the [center] of each "Hail Mary".” While many pray the rosary on their own, it is also prayed at St. Paul Church each weekday morning after the 7am Mass and on the 13th of the month. (On Oct. 13, it will be on the Parish Green.) It is also prayed at Sacred Heart Church on Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm and on the 1st Saturday of the Month at 10am with children of the parish. Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Auxiliary Bishop-Elect Juan Miguel Betancourt, S.E.V.M. A few weeks ago, I noted in this space that it was announced by the Vatican on September 18th that Pope Francis had ap-pointed Rev. Juan Miguel Betancourt, S.E.V.M. as an Auxiliary Bishop for the Archdiocese of Hartford. The Bishop-elect is a native of Puerto Rico and is fluent in English, Spanish and Ital-ian and is conversant in others. He comes to Hartford from the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis in Minnesota where he was a pastor as well as the vice-rector and professor at a sem-inary teaching Sacred Scripture. He will be ordained a Bishop this Thursday, October 18th at 2 pm at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hartford.
Fr. Betancourt was born on June 1, 1970 in Puerto Rico. The Bishop-elect is a member of the Society of the Servants of the Holy Eucharist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Similar to the Friars assigned at St. Paul’s, he is a religious, having professed
his vows on Oct. 7, 1994 and his perpetual vows on August 6, 2000. He was ordained a priest on April 21, 2001. Following his ordination, he taught Sacred Scripture in his native Puerto Rico. Then in 2006 he went to the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis, where at the time of his appointment to Hartford, he was the vice-rector of St. Paul’s Seminary and also taught Sacred Scripture there. In addition, he was the Pastor of St. Frances de Sales Parish. He also holds the position of vicar general (2nd in charge) of his religious community.
In reading through some of the articles in The Catholic Spirit, two quotes seem to capture our new auxiliary bishop. His administrative assistant Lisa Flood said: "I'm so sad for our loss. That's the first thing that struck me. I'm very happy for him and for the Church at large, but he's great in his role here. He will be missed. She said she admires him for his willing-ness to discuss challenging subjects, his sense of humor, and his ability to connect pastorally and personally with the semi-narians. Bishop Andrew Cozzens, Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul-Minneapolis, said, “It’s not an easy time to become a bishop because of the dramatic struggles that the Church is undergo-ing, but, in my opinion, Bishop-elect Betancourt is the kind of bishop that we want because he’s a man of great integrity and holiness who will serve the Church very well.”
If you would like to attend the Episcopal Ordination of Fr. Betancourt see page 10 for more information. If you have the time, I suspect you’ll find the experience uplifting. Please pray this week, and in a special way on Thursday, for our new Aux-iliary Bishop.
World Mission Collection Throughout the course of the year there are three 2nd collections here at St. Paul's on behalf of the mission activities of the Church. Next weekend is the World Mission Collection and the last of the mission collec-tions for this year. Few among us go forth as missionaries to spread the message of the Gospel to foreign lands. Our own Fr. Raymond did that for part of his ministry as a Franciscan priest to Ghana, West Africa. For the rest of us we can aid and assist the mission activity of the Church by sharing our re-sources, including our prayers. With that in mind, I ask for your prayerful and generous support of the World Mission Collec-tion next weekend.
Busy First Weekend of November Italian Night is scheduled for Saturday, November 3rd after the 4pm Mass. Please see page 7 for how you can help and about getting your tickets. Then we will celebrate the 60th Anniversary of St. Paul School the next morning on Sunday, November 4th at the 10:30am Mass followed by a reception in the School Library. Check out page 4 for more info on this event.
Food Drive-Part One: Foodshare. It always says much to me about this parish when I see pa-rishioners faithfully bringing in food for our food pantry. Your donations help stock our St. Clare Pantry for the bi-weekly distribution of food at Sacred Heart Church every other Friday at Noon. As we head into the colder and more inclement weather, those needs only increase. So please continue to fill those blue bags so that we will have enough food to distribute to the more than 110 people who show up at each distribution. If you know someone who needs transportation to the Food-share, they can get a ride through the Berlin Senior Center.

Food Drive-Part Two: Thanksgiving Food Collection. In addition to Foodshare the Social Action Committee of the Parish also sponsors 30 families in Berlin to receive baskets for Thanksgiving. The contents of these baskets is a bit different and so on page 7 of the bulletin you can see the typical fixings that they are looking for to stock these baskets. The baskets will also include $30 gift cards to purchase a turkey and other perishables as well. So you could also help by donating for part of a card, or a card or two, to help cover those costs. ‘When did we see you hungry and not feed you . . . when you did it do it for one of my least ones.’ (cf. Mt. 25: 44-45)
Final Thoughts -Keep the goodies coming for the college care packages. Have you signed up for Trunk O’ Treat? As I write this, the Sox are up 2-1 in ALDS. No problems in Houston as they wait for an opponent. It will now be at least 71 years until the Indians win the WS. The Brewers will try to get to the WS for the first time since 1982 and by beating the Dodgers who have not won a WS since 1988. As feared the Ravens disap-pointed on the Shores of Lake Erie while the Bills, Pats and Jest all won. Have a blessed week everyone. - Fr. Joe
*Please note—All Souls Day envelopes must be received at the Parish Center by 10/22 in order to appear in the bulletin.

Berlin Catholic Youth Ministry
Our high school youth ministry will continue to meet weekly on Sunday evenings at 7pm in the Church Hall.
This Sunday we will be starting a 5 week series called "Question Everything." We hope you can join us for these events! For those with questions, please join us and we will try to find answers together.
“Why?” and “How?” are two important questions that we need to ask to obtain information and clarification. It’s often through these two simple questions that we not only seek answers but also open ourselves to the truth. Much of our personal development is a result of the questions we ask. Our faith is certainly not exempt from this process. Question-ing is a very healthy part of our faith journey and one of the ways that we grow. Over the course of this series, we are exploring popular questions and objections to our faith. The main intent of these questions is to gain a better understanding of God and the Catholic faith. Questioning is good, healthy, and necessary so long as we strive to grow in faith and our knowledge of Church teaching. -LifeTeen

Prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense
against the wickednessand snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.
Why do we say this prayer at the end of Mass?
“The traditional Prayer to Saint Michael was prayed after Sunday Mass from 1886 to 1964, and in light of the grave sins and crimes that continue to afflict us, like a number of other Bishops, I believe it is timely to restore the practice after every regularly scheduled Sunday and weekday Mass celebrated in the Archdiocese of Hartford”
-Archbishop Blair’s ‘Letter and Decree’ dated 9/11/2018
