THE SUNDAY OF THE RESURRECTION: EASTER DAY APRIL 12, 2020

Today to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, a celebration which will last for fifty days in all, and which is repeated again every Sunday throughout the year. The Gospel reading begins with the first Easter Day, when Jesus appeared in the evening to the disciples and gave them his Spirit. The story continues with his appearance the following Sunday when Thomas met the Lord and confessed his faith. It concludes with words for us: ‘Blessed are they who have not seen, yet believe.'

A reading from the Acts of the Apostles replaces the Old Testament reading every Sunday in the Great Fifty Days. Today we hear a portion of Peter’s sermon proclaiming the Resurrection on the Day of Pentecost. God has raised Jesus, and Peter and the other

apostles are witnesses of the Resurrection.

The second lesson this season comes from Peter's first epistle. This is a sermon on the meaning of Baptism. Today the message is about our new life in God as we died and rose with Christ in Baptism. Nevertheless, in the world we will still

have trials and persecutions, Peter tells us, but in them our faith is strengthened and purified.

As we gather, as church, to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection, we find the living presence of Jesus in his Word, in the sacraments, and in our life as the community of the Body of Christ. We find ourselves made by the Holy Spirit into a community which is the visible and living sign of the risen Christ.

During this season of Easter, may we all be filled with hope, promise, health, love, and peace. It is important to remember to take the time this Easter to care for ourselves, and reach out (albeit remotely) to those we love at this time, to wave to a neighbor, call those who may be anxious, and bring a bit of hope in this time of crisis. The Church has always been about people rallying together, following Jesus, and sharing God’s love with our neighbors. While the methods change, St. Paul’s mission never does. WE ARE FAMILY! I wish you all an Easter of love, peace, safety and health. Yours in Christ, Diana Rodriguez, Parish Administrator

Dear Friends, As I write this, we are just beginning the Triduum, the "three-days' space" that begins Maundy Thursday and ends with the dismissal at the Great Vigil of Easter. The

liturgy for Holy Saturday morning ends with one of the closing anthems from the Committal service, "In the midst of life we are in death." This long period of quarantine has often felt that way. It's hard to be away from the church and the people we love. For the choirs, the loss of making music and being in community is especially hard at this time of year. Yet, there has also been joy in learning new ways to be in community that have helped me form closer relationships with everyone. The daily broadcasts of Morning Prayer and Compline have been a joy and gift to all of us, and have helped me strengthen my own prayer life. Seeing so many of our folks step up and help one another—check in with one another—be thankful and be present with one another—these are among the gifts of this season. It is my hope and prayer that we will come away from this time stronger in faith and our bonds of affection will be much greater. I thank you all for the gift that you continue to be in my life, and for the joy of serving as your minister of music in this wonderful parish.

—MARK TRAUTMAN, DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

I’ve never experienced an Easter like this. But, then again, I have never experienced anything like what we’ve known over the last several weeks. We have been surrounded by such fear, anxiety, and even death itself. It’s been hard for many of us to see life, hope, and grace in the midst of all this. I have found myself frequently holding my breath; waiting for the other shoe to drop. But that’s why this Easter season will be my most meaningful ever! While I did not keep up with my Lenten discipline of meditating every day for 10 minutes, I have deepened my faith. I have known God more profoundly in pastoral calls, emails, texts, Facebook messages, community organizing, and the like. “Being” with you all during worship, Story Time, meetings, and casual conversations has kept me conscious of the fact that every day is an opportunity to show and receive God’s love. As we step into this season of new life and possibility, let us continue to look for those things and provide them to each other. Yes, life is different; and there are real dangers of which we must be aware. But “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NRSV) Whatever we’re experiencing, we have the power to be blessings to others; we have the love of God and each other; and we can be disciplined enough to prioritize our faith, give what and when we can, and know that we will make it through this valley – together.KAILEEN ALSTON, DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN FORMATION

The Easter season brings empowerment through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s work moves forward into the world through our actions. We are bound by the Holy Spirit to make a difference in the lives of those in our community and beyond. Then, Coronavirus came. In the midst of uncertainty and loss, something wonderful is happening. The global suffering that we are witnessing has made it startlingly evident that we need other people, and that they need us, too. This Easter, we call upon God to answer our prayers and revive all of our hopes. Through the power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and with Father Bill Allport to shepherd us , we have the opportunity to respond to a loving God through our spiritual gifts. We have each been given a specific role to play- to glorify God and to love and help each other. We are grateful to be called to serve the amazing people of St Paul’s Church at this challenging time. Please continue to serve with us, through your time, talents and financial gifts. In God’s Love, Robin Jackson and Max McDaniel, Wardens of St Paul’s Church

N O T H I N G C A N C E L S E A S T E R ! E A S T E R W I L L N O T B E Q U A R A N T I N E D ! Now I know…this is not what you expected… nor what any of us hoped would be our Easter Sunday celebration in 2020. This year, we cannot gather together physically in our sacred space nor do we share all the celebratory signs of Easter. However, Easter cannot be cancelled. Christ’s Resurrection cannot be quarantined. God's love and grace, given in Jesus Christ, cannot be stopped or sheltered away. We must journey through difficult days still, but God's wonder and transformation cannot be forced to stay-at-home and set aside for a time.

Today, we are not only informed of Jesus' Resurrection, but formed for a living faith. That means: the Gospel is not merely a communication of things that can be known like facts or figures — it makes new things happen, shapes us, and is life-changing. While authorities tells us to stay shut away, like those disciples in the upper room on the first Easter morning, the door of all creation has been flung open. Our lives are shaped for a new way by the kingdom of God for the sake of others.

Our celebration of Easter reminds us of the hope we have and how our hope will buoy those in need. It reminds us how our actions, empowered by Christ’s living hope, are vessels of God’s grace and love to a world that is afraid, anxious, and hiding.

The gospel message of Easter is clear: God's love cannot be quarantined nor cancelled. May we have hearts to bear such a love in our present days. THE REV. DR. WILLIAM H. ALLPORT, II,RECTOR & SENIOR CLERGYPERSON
