St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Fort Wayne, Indiana
The Seventh Sunday after Pentecost July 19, 2020
10:00 am
Processional Hymn 585 Lord Jesus Christ, with Us Abide
5 Restrain, O Lord, the human pride
That seeks to thrust Your truth aside
Or with some man-made thoughts or things
Would dim the words Your Spirit sings.
6 Stay with us, Lord, and keep us true;
Preserve our faith our whole life through—
Your Word alone our heart’s defense,
The Church’s glorious confidence.
Stand Invocation, Confession and Absolution – LSB p. 203
P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Our help is in the name of the Lord,
C who made heaven and earth.
P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared.
P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of
our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God
and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful
condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His
grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner.
C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.
2
P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a
called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the
Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
Kyrie – LSB p. 204
Hymn of Praise Gloria in Excelsis – p. 204
1 To God on high be glory
And peace to all the earth;
Goodwill from God in heaven
Proclaimed at Jesus' birth!
We praise and bless You, Father;
Your holy name we sing—
Our thanks for Your great glory,
Lord God, our heav'nly King.
2 To You, O sole-begotten,
The Father's Son, we pray;
O Lamb of God, our Savior,
You take our sins away.
Have mercy on us, Jesus;
Receive our heartfelt cry,
Where You in pow'r are seated
At God's right hand on high—
3 For You alone are holy,
You only are the Lord.
Forever and forever,
Be worshiped and adored;
You with the Holy Spirit
Alone are Lord Most High,
In God the Father's glory.
"Amen!" our glad reply.
Salutation and Collect of the Day
P The Lord be with you.
C And also with you. P Let us pray….
C Amen. Sit Old Testament Reading Isaiah 44:6–8 God declares Himself to be the first and the last.
C Thanks be to God.
Epistle Romans 8:18–27 The Holy Spirit ministers to God's dear children by giving us hope in our suffering.
C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse The congregation sings the alleluias before and after the verse.
I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.
3
Holy Gospel Matthew 13:24–30, 36–43 At the end of this age, the Son of Man will send His angels to gather all people.
C Glory to You, O Lord.
After the reading:
C Praise to You, O Christ.
Nicene Creed
C I believe in one God,
the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth
and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the only-begotten Son of God,
begotten of His Father before all worlds,
God of God, Light of Light,
very God of very God,
begotten, not made,
being of one substance with the Father,
by whom all things were made;
who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven
and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary
and was made man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.
He suffered and was buried.
And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures
and ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of the Father.
And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,
whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord and giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,
who spoke by the prophets.
And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,
I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,
and I look for the resurrection of the dead
and the life T of the world to come. Amen.
Sit Hymn of the Day 827 Hark, the Voice of Jesus Calling
1 Hark, the voice of Jesus calling,
“Who will go and work today?
Fields are white and harvests waiting—
Who will bear the sheaves away?”
Loud and long the Master calleth;
Rich reward He offers thee.
Who will answer, gladly saying,
“Here am I, send me, send me”?
2 Some take up His task in morning,
To their Lord responding soon;
Some are called in heat of midday,
Others late in afternoon;
Even as the sun is setting,
Some are sent into the fields,
There to gather in the bounty
That God’s Word so richly yields.
The hymn continues on the next page.
4
3 For as rain and snow from heaven
Water seeds in dusty soil,
Causing them to bud and flower,
Giving bread to those who toil;
So the Lord sends forth His promise,
Words of life and joy and peace—
Never void to Him returning,
Bearing fruit with great increase.
4 Hearken to the Lord whose coming
Marks the time when grace shall end,
When with His angelic reapers
He in glory shall descend.
Soon the night, the final harvest;
Soon the time for work shall cease.
Then the souls His grace has garnered
Shall enjoy His Sabbath peace.

Prayer of the Church C Lord, have mercy.
Sit Offertory Music Preach You the Word setting by Johannes Brahms
Preach you the Word and plant it home
To men who like or like it not,
The Word that shall endure and stand
When flow’rs and men shall be forgot.
We know how hard, O Lord, the task
Your servant bade us undertake:
To preach Your Word and never ask
What prideful profit it may make.
Preach you the Word and plant it home
And never faint; the Harvest Lord
Who gave the sower seed to sow
Will watch and tend His planted Word. .
We welcome to the Lord’s Table members of St. Paul’s and members of sister congregations of The Lutheran Church―
Missouri Synod. If you have any concerns, please speak with Pastor Cage before the service.
During the distribution, we will be using two continuous lines—both pulpit and lectern sides at the same time.
Please maintain physical distancing while waiting in line to receive.

Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hymn 892 Come, Ye Thankful People, Come Stanzas 2–4 of this hymn reflect today’s Gospel reading.
1 Come, ye thankful people, come;
Raise the song of harvest home.
All be safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin;
God, our maker, doth provide
For our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come;
Raise the song of harvest home.
2 All the world is God’s own field,
Fruit unto His praise to yield;
Wheat and tares together sown,
Unto joy or sorrow grown.
First the blade and then the ear,
Then the full corn shall appear.
Lord of harvest, grant that we
Wholesome grain and pure may be.
3 For the Lord, our God, shall come
And shall take His harvest home,
From His field shall in that day
All offenses purge away,
Give His angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast,
But the fruitful ears to store
In His garner evermore.
4 Even so, Lord, quickly come
To Thy final harvest home;
Gather Thou Thy people in,
Free from sorrow, free from sin,
There, forever purified,
In Thy garner to abide:
Come with all Thine angels, come,
Raise the glorious harvest home.
Prayer before Communing
Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Hymn 631 Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face
5 Mine is the sin, but Thine the righteousness;
Mine is the guilt, but Thine the cleansing blood;
Here is my robe, my refuge, and my peace:
Thy blood, Thy righteousness, O Lord my God.
6 Too soon we rise; the vessels disappear;
The feast, though not the love, is past and gone;
The bread and wine remove, but Thou art here;
Nearer than ever; still my shield and sun.
7 Feast after feast thus comes and passes by,
Yet, passing, points to that glad feast above,
Giving sweet foretaste of the festal joy,
The Lamb’s great marriage feast of bliss and love.
Solo Then Shall the Righteous Shine Forth Felix Mendelssohn
Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in their heavenly Father’s realm,
Joy on their head shall be for everlasting, all sorrow and mourning shall flee away forever.

Psalm 119:57–64 antiphon v. 50, setting by Henry Gerike
The refrain is sung first by the choir, then repeated by all.
The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.
I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.
When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;
I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. Refrain
Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law.
At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your just and righteous decrees.
I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.
The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain

Nunc Dimittis– LSB p. 211 O Lord, now let Your servant
Depart in heav'nly peace,
For I have seen the glory
Of Your redeeming grace:
A light to lead the Gentiles
Unto Your holy hill,
The glory of Your people,
Your chosen Israel.
All glory to the Father,
All glory to the Son,
All glory to the Spirit,
Forever Three in One;
For as in the beginning,
Is now, shall ever be,
God's triune name resounding
Through all eternity.
Post-Communion Collect and Benediction – LSB p. 212
C Amen.
Hymn to Depart 589 Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens, stanzas 1& 4
1 Speak, O Lord, Your servant listens,
Let Your Word to me come near;
Newborn life and spirit give me,
Let each promise still my fear.
Death’s dread pow’r, its inward strife,
Wars against Your Word of life;
Fill me, Lord, with love’s strong fervor
That I cling to You forever!
4 As I pray, dear Jesus, hear me;
Let Your words in me take root.
May Your Spirit
e’er be near me
That I bear
abundant fruit.
May I daily sing
Your praise,
From my heart glad anthems raise,
Till my highest praise is given
In the endless joy of heaven.
Your offerings will be received at the door or your offering may be mailed to 1126 S. Barr St. Fort Wayne, IN 46802.
Please call the church office to set up electronic giving.

Small Catechism
The Seventh Petition
But deliver us from evil.
What does this mean?
We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father
in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body
and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally,
when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and
graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to
Himself in heaven.
Large Catechism
Thus you see how God wants us to pray to him for
everything that affects our bodily welfare and directs us to
seek and expect help from no one but him. But this petition
he has put last, for if we are to be protected and delivered
from all evil, his name must first be hallowed in us, his
kingdom come among us, and his will be done. Then he will
preserve us from sin and shame and from everything else that
harms or injures us.
Thus God has briefly set before us all the afflictions that
may ever beset us in order that we may never have an excuse
for failing to pray. But the efficacy of prayer consists in our
learning also to say “Amen” to it—that is, not to doubt that
our prayer is surely heard and will be granted.

July 19 – Pentecost VII (Proper 11A) – Surprise pregnancies often come with many burdens. Terminal diagnoses may mean intense suffering. But our Lord and Savior promises these circumstances also bring returns that far exceed the costs (Romans 8:18). He draws near and dwells with us in all our afflictions (Romans 8:26) and cultivates a life that’s greater than physical comforts – like resurrection smuggled under cover of crucifixion and a harvest of wheat safely hidden to blossom behind weeds (Matthew 13:30).
