Dear Parishioners, Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, we hear the gospel story of Jesus taking Peter, James and John up a high mountain and being transfigured before them, when Moses and Elijah appeared to a glorified Jesus, when even His clothes appeared “dazzling white.” And every year, we hear Peter’s suggestion to build three tents for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. But before we ridicule Peter for suggesting what he did, if we had been there to witness such a spectacular event, we would have said the same because, like Peter, we might not have wanted it to end.

It was good though that Jesus’ transfiguration did end because His help was needed at the bottom of the mountain. According to the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, immediately after He was transfigured, Jesus was called on to heal a young boy possessed by a demon. After receiving glory from God, Jesus immediately shared that glory through His power of healing. Unlike the glory of His Transfiguration which was temporary, we believe that Our Lord now lives in eternal glory with God. And not only is His glory without end, so is His desire to share the glory of His love to all who call upon Him as we continue our journey to let Him be our way. In the Word,

The face of a newly engaged person shines with joy. The face of a child who has accomplished a difficult task glows with pride. The face of a person who has made a difficult choice to do what is right against all odds reflects peace. These are all visible expressions of transfiguration, although fleeting ones. The transfiguration the disciples witnessed on the “high mountain” was also fleeting; they came “down from the mountain.” At the same time, this transfiguration foreshadowed the theophany of an

eternal glory: Christ risen from the dead. Jesus’ theophany of transfiguration and risen Life continues in us in the world today through our participation in the Paschal Mystery, the dying and rising mystery of Christ. This participation requires of us the same dying to self Jesus embraced. We must set aside our own agenda to pay more attention to the needs of others. We must be generous in recognizing and complimenting the good others do. We must be inclusive in accepting those who do not look or think as we do. These actions are fleeting, but they indicate what is everlasting. Experiences of transfiguration help us see beyond what is here and now to what will be—our eternal share in Christ’s risen Life.

The next Care for the Caregiver Conference at Alexian Brothers

Hospital will be on Saturday, March 28. The presenter for this conference will be Fr. Francis Hoffman (Fr. Rocky). If you are a caregiver or visit the homebound and would like to attend, please notify me by Wednesday, March 17. There are flyers with information concerning this event in the pamphlet stand in the narthex of the church.

Prayer is the most powerful weapon on earth. Sometimes we may feel our prayers for others and ourselves are not being answered, because our fast-paced world has conditioned us to expect instant responses. God determines the proper time for our answers. He knows far more than we do what is best and, in His time not

ours, those petitions will bring forth the fruits that He grants. Our prayers must be persistent and from the heart, for when we place our prayers for others first God answers our own prayers. He knows what we truly need and He always provides.
