Brothers and Sisters:
It is time, once again, for the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious (RFR). Please join me in heartfelt support of the 2014 appeal scheduled to take place on December 13-14, 2014.
Your efforts are vital to its success.
Catholic bishops of the United States initiated the RFR in 1988 to address the deficit in retirement funding among religious communities. Despite ongoing generosity to the annual collection, numerous communities continue to struggle to provide for their senior members. Proceeds from the collection offer supplemental support for bolstering retirement savings and for meeting such day
-to-day needs as prescription medications and nursing care.
Many of us may recall a sister, brother, or religious order priest whose life and ministry had a profound impact on us. You likely have also witnessed the selfless dedication of religious serving in Catholic parishes, schools, hospitals, and social-service agencies. I invite you, then, either to host an RFR speaker at Mass or to make the appeal yourself, sharing with parishioners the contributions religious have made and continue to make to our Church and world. Most importantly, please be sure to announce the collection from the pulpit.
I understand that many worthwhile causes vie for the limited resources of parishioners; I ask you simply to encourage them to give what they can. Above all, please join me in praying for God’s continued blessing on our nation’s elderly religious.
Faithfully in Christ,
Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon Bishop of Joliet

2014 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Pledge Report PARISH GOAL: $59,583
AMOUNT PLEDGED: $61,825 AMOUNT PAID: $55,871
REMAINING BALANCE: $5,954 POTENTIAL REBATE AMOUNT: $1,345
It is very important that these pledges be paid before the end of 2014. If we exceed our goal in paid pledges, 60% of the additional funds received will be returned to the parish for our use. Please contact the Development Office with any questions you may have about your pledge at 815-838-8515. Want to pay off your pledge balance with a gift of appreciated assets? Donating appreciated stock or other assets from your investment portfolio instead of cash is a smart way to complete your CMAA gift or other charitable donations to your parish, school or other non-profit. Should you need assistance in making a gift of appreciated assets to our parish or diocese, please contact Tony Brandolino at 815-221-6190 before December 15, 2014. Please note that all donations must be completed before the end of the year for a 2014 tax deduction.

What would Christmas be without a pageant? The religious education students in Grades K-5 will be participating in their annual Christmas Pageant on Saturday, December 13, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church. All parishioners are cordially invited to attend. The YOLO Winter Retreat and Christmas Caroling is planned for Saturday, December 20! Please meet at 4:30 p.m. in Room 1 and attend 5:00 p.m. Mass together. We will sing after Mass outside
church, then go caroling in the neighborhood and then return to St. Philip’s for pizza and a movie. The retreat will end with Night Prayer in the church at 10:45 p.m. Parents are invited to join us for prayer. Please obtain a flyer and permission slip from the RE Office, from Mrs. Sannasardo, or on-line at st-phil.org. Your friends are welcome to join us—if they bring a permission slip. Also, remember to dress for the weather! There will be no religious education classes on December 17, 20, 24, 27, 31 and January 3. Classes will resume for Grades 6-8 on Wednesday, January 7, and for Grades K-5 on Saturday, January 10.

Christmas Toy Collection with the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. The children are anxious to show their love and generous spirit by collecting a large number of toys. They are encouraging fellow students and
the parish community to participate in this very important activity. Please bring a new, unwrapped toy to the church entrance on Friday, December 12, from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. A Marine Corps representative and the kindergarten students will be singing Christmas carols and gratefully
accepting your donation at that time. Thank you for your generosity!

This Second Sunday of Advent reminds us that John the Baptist was chosen by God to prepare the way for Jesus whom he revealed to the people of Israel as the Messiah, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). John consecrated himself entirely to God and to Jesus. But, in the end, what happened? He died for the sake of the truth when he denounced the adultery of King Herod and Herodias. How many people pay dearly for their commitment to truth? Upright people who are not
afraid to go against the current! How many just persons prefer to go against the current, so as not to deny the voice of con-science, the voice of truth? And we, we must not be afraid! Do not be afraid to go against the current, when they want to rob us of hope, when they propose rotten values, values that are like food gone bad--and when food has gone bad, it harms us. So these values harm us. We must go against the current ! Go against the tide and have the daring to move precisely against the current. Forward, be brave and go against the tide! And be proud of doing so. Jesus, help me commit myself to your king-dom work. Today I will… Source: Our Advent Journey with Christ in the Words of Pope Francis, All Saints Press

“Presents” and “presence” can have the same meaning. Have you ever been
invited to a birthday party and the guest of honor said, “Don’t buy me anything because your presence is your gift to me?” With these words, the honoree conveys the esteem he/she feels for the guest. Sometimes it seems we put more emphasis on an event and not on why we are invited. The idea that our presence is more important than anything we can offer is very countercultural. Whenever or wherever we gather, the most significant gift we can bring is our true selves and the love/friendship we share with others to establish a sense of community. This is especially true when we attend Mass. God invites us to celebrate His love for us and each other every time we share in the feast of His body and blood. This feast would not be real if He had not assumed our human nature when He came to us as a child at Christmas. Emanuel is with us always; He meets where we are and never leaves. As we draw closer to Christmas, let us remember that wherever we gather in His name His presence is His gift to us.
