Catholic Parent Schools Parent Conference - #Future Ready – Preparing Our Children for a

Future World

Last weekend I was fortunate to be able to attend the conference hosted by the Council of Catholic School

Parents at St. Paul’s Catholic College, Manly. Professor Lea Waters (PhD) opened the conference with her

keynote address on strength based parenting focusing on parents and their role in helping their children flourish

in an ever changing world. I have purchased her book “The Strength Switch’ which will feature in our Parenting

Matters area for parents to borrow from next term. During Mass on Saturday evening, Most Rev Peter A

Comensoli, Bishop of Broken Bay thanked Parents who were able to attend the weekend especially for their

‘diligence, generosity and love with which they undertake their role and responsibilities as parents, for our

Catholic schools exist to support parents in their role as educators of their children in faith and in life, helping

all children to know and love God, and to share the love of God in the world through all that they are and do.’

Awards Assembly

Week 9 awards assembly will be held Friday, 15 September in the Girra Girra Gymnasium at 9.00am. Our

Kindergarten and Years 3 & 4 classes will be presenting an item, all welcome to attend especially to hear some

our verse speaking entries at the Bathurst Eisteddfod. Our children and staff are very proud of their

achievements and look forward to presenting them again this Friday.

School Hours

Over the last few weeks there has been a noticeable increase in the number of children who are being dropped

off to school from as early as 8.05am. Supervision for the children does not begin until 8.30am and the school

doors and top gate are opened by 8.20am. I realise that many parents are under time constraints for work but

‘duty of care’ for the children is not being met during the early drop off time and supervision commences. I

urge parents to make arrangements so that children arrive closer to 8.30am.

End of term Mass

On September 21st we will celebrate Mass as a school in the Girra Girra Gymnasium to celebrate the feast of St

Matthew the evangelist and also the end of Term 3. Please join us at 10am to celebrate the Mass.

Bathurst Eisteddfod Results

Congratulations to all the children who attended the Bathurst Eisteddfod which took place over the last two

days at BEMC. A special thank you to our teachers for the outstanding preparation in preparing our verse

speaking choirs.

Get Henry Miller to Darwin – fundraiser!

Henry Miller (Yr6) will be jetting off to Darwin on the 28th

of September for the NSW PSSA Rugby

Championships. As you could well imagine the cost for such a trip is expensive, around $2500, covering his

flights, accommodation, and playing fees. At St. Phils we can help Henry by:

1. Buying a raffle ticket.

The cost of the raffle is only $2 with first prize being an Apple Ipad Air 2

WiFi, 2nd

Apple Ipad Mini 2 WiFi, 3rd

Fitbit Flex Activity Wristband,

4th

/5th

Sony Bluetooth Speaker.

There are only 100 tickets so be quick! If you would like to purchase a

ticket, send money in an envelope with details of family name, phone

number and number of tickets to be purchased.

2. Cup cake stall

Year 6 will show our support by holding a cup cake stall on the last day

of term, Friday, 22nd

September. All money raised will go towards

Henry’s flights and accommodation.

Early Stage One - Kindergarten

Geography

This term Kindergarten have been learning “Our Places”. The students have

been focusing on their own home environments and the special features

associated with them.

English We have been learning the sound trees and different spelling choices for

sounds. For example- ai, a-e. We brainstorm words and use them in our

writing.

The children are working hard on learning their list words and moving their aliens each time they improve.

Maths We have been concentrating on multiplication this term. We know how to make 3 groups of 4 and

5 groups of 2 with counters. We have had maths groups and tried hard to write our numbers

correctly.

Science

Weather in our World has been the topic this term. We have written weather

reports, looked at the seasons and written a class book about day and night.

Sport Kindergarten have been lucky enough this term to have a range of sporting

activities delivered to them. Basketball Australia and Western Mariners Soccer

have been conducting numerous coaching clinics for the children on Wednesday

throughout the term. Students have also been participating in sports groups on

Fridays which incorporates all of the fundamental movement skills.

Creative Arts

During this term the students have been attending weekly music lessons with Mrs Fish that incorporate dance,

drama and music. In class time students have been creating beautiful artworks that link to the topics in each Key

Learning Areas (KLA).

This term the Eisteddfod has been a major

focus for the class. Students have been

preparing for the big day with daily practice of

the poems, working on facial expressions and

delivery of the performance.

Religion

We have been learning about God’s great family and looking at stories in the Old Testament. We brought our

own baby photos in like baby Moses and placed them in a basket. God took care of Moses.

Crunch and Sip Why shouldn’t students eat snacks like muesli bars or fruit leathers during Crunch&Sip?

Foods such as fruit-topped muesli bars and fruit leathers are often high in sugar and energy, and low in

other nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Fruit and vegetables are lower in energy and high in

nutrients, making them the ideal snack option.

Fruit leathers, roll-ups and sticky muesli bars also have the tendency to cling to teeth, which increases

the risk of tooth decay.

Fruit and vegetables are the only foods allowed to be eaten during this time.

Children and Self-Esteem - Information for Parents by Yin Hourigan,

School Counsellor (Centacare Bathurst).

Self-esteem refers to feeling good about and accepting yourself. For school-aged children, self-esteem tends to

be related to a number of factors, including learning, their appearance and friendships. Good self-esteem helps

children to try new things and solve problems. It also provides them with a solid basis for learning and

development. 1

According to the Raising Children Network, the building blocks for your child’s self-esteem include:

Relationships, connections and a sense of belonging: Knowing they’re loved, and belong to a family and

community that values them is good for your child’s self-esteem.

Quality time: Spending quality time with your child lets them know they are important to you.

Achievements and challenges: Being encouraged to try new things, finding activities/ interests they’re

good at, and being praised for their achievements and efforts can help your child feel

good about themselves.

Over the coming weeks, I will discuss each of these building blocks in more detail. 1 About self-esteem: Children 1-8 years. (2017). Retrieved from http://raisingchildren.net.au/articles/self-esteem.html.
