Dear Parish Family,
Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel challenges us in a very fundamental way. The problem with
the rich man is not so much that he did something wrong. The problem is that he did nothing
at all.
One can imagine the rich man walking out his front gate each day, carefully stepping over Lazarus, intently trying not to
notice his need, and trying to avoid doing anything to alleviate his suffering. All it would have taken was a little food and a
little human kindness.
When someone is in need, we may not be able to solve all their problems, but we can often do small things with great care
to ease their sadness and suffering. All that may be needed is a listening ear and a prayerful heart. We are dependent upon
one another, and we are dependent upon God. We are a people with many needs. That is what we admit in this Eucharist.
We need God’s love. We need God’s forgiveness. We need our Savior, who freely offers himself to save us and bring us
to eternal life.
In this Eucharist, Jesus reaches out to each of us as we reach out with our hands and with our hearts. Jesus offers us his
love and comfort in his body and blood, so that we can share that with those around us.

October 3: Preparing for Sacrifice
Pope Pius X once said that “the surest, easiest, shortest way [to Heaven]
is by the Eucharist.” Bishop Barron reiterates this idea throughout this
session by focusing on the Preparation of the Gifts and the Eucharistic
Prayer, both of which prepare us for the Sacrifice.

Pray the Rosary You are invited to become a Rosary Warrior! Please join us
on the first Saturday of each month to recite the Rosary aloud.
We meet at 4:30pm in the St. John XXIII Center. Our next
gathering is on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
Our Lady has asked that all of us say the Rosary for world peace
and for our own personal intentions. This 20 minutes spent in group
prayer with and for each other is a wonderful preparation for our
Mass celebration.
If you are not familiar with the Rosary prayers we welcome
you to join us. We have rosaries and pamphlets that will help
you and we will be happy to introduce you to this powerful
prayer which Our Lady has asked us to pray.

Luthen Lecture
Standing in the Light: Exploring Liturgical Art by Bro. Martin Erspamer, OSB
Thursday, October 24, at 7:00 pm at Corpus Christi Church (300 N.
Tanque Verde Loop Rd., Tucson). Using photographs and stories to help
explore historical and theological precedents, this lecture will show
numerous examples that embody the best of liturgical spirituality and
catechesis. Samples of Brother Martin’s artwork (including note cards,
ceramic tiles, and small drawings) will be available for purchase during
the reception. There is no cost to attend the lecture; a free-will offering
will be collected for the benefit of Casa Hogar, a Salvatorian-sponsored
Ignatian Silent Retreat Entering the Mind of St. Ignatius from October 11-13, at Picture Rocks
Retreat House. Join us this year for a life-changing experience of the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. This year, Fr. Felix Just, SJ,
New Testament scholar and Jesuit priest, will lead us in reflection on the
Annotations (the introductory notes) of the Exercises, in which St.
Ignatius laid out his understanding of how we might best open ourselves
to conversion of heart. We are praying this year to deepen our daily life
with God, and with each other: seeking the graces of openness and
generosity with God, of charity and good will with other people, and of
honesty and integrity with ourselves. To make a reservation or get more
information, contact Ann S. Dickson at [email protected] or
