Papa Francisco 23 Junio 2017

I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.

“He was enamoured of our smallness, and for this reason He has chosen us. And He chooses the small: not the great, the small. And He is revealed to the small: ‘you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones.’ He is revealed to the little ones: if you want to understand something of the mystery of Jesus, lower yourself: make yourself small. Be mindful of being nothing. And He not only chooses and reveals Himself to the little ones; He calls the little ones: ‘Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.’ You that are the smallest – because of suffering, because of fatigue – He chooses the little ones, He is revealed to the little ones, and He calls the little ones. But the great, does He not call them? His heart is open, but the great do not recognize His voice because they are not able to hear it because they are full of themselves. To hear the voice of the Lord, you must make yourself little.”

And thus we come to the mystery of the Heart of Christ, which is not a “holy card” for the devout: the transfixed Heart of Christ is “the heart of revelation, the heart of our faith, because He made Himself small, He has chosen this way”: that of humbling Himself, of emptying Himself “even to death on the Cross.” It is, the Pope said, “a choice for smallness, so that the glory of God might be manifest.” Pope Francis June 23, 2017

In the Gospel today we hear Jesus say: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul brings peace to those who are overwhelmed with life’s burdens.

Incoming Aggie Freshmen/Nuevos Estudiantes Aggie

The premier poet of the English language, Geoffrey Chaucer, introduced one of his most beloved characters, the “Wife of Bath,” by this telling remark: “Husbands at church door she had five.” Four times widowed, she was setting off on a pilgrimage, notably without number five. The church door is a curious detail, pointing to the fourteenth-century wedding custom of marrying on the porch of the parish church. The goal was to give maximum publicity to the consent of the groom and bride, and so consent was moved from the bride’s home to a public venue. The priest would stand in the doorway and begin by sprinkling the couple with holy water. He needed to make sure they weren’t too closely related and give them some instruction. He would direct the groom to pay the bride’s family a dowry, and then announce the monetary amounts to the interested passersby. Only then would the guests enter the church for the wedding Mass, during which the bride and groom would hold lighted candles. The gradual move from home to church and the shift from the bride’s father to the priest’s authority helped to protect the freedom of brides who weren’t quite as confident as the Wife of Bath.

Finding Our Place / Encontrando Nuestro Lugar

Why do we fill up the seats in church from the back to the front? Maybe it’s piety: We sit in the back because, aware of our many failings, we don’t feel worthy to draw near. Maybe it’s culture: We sit in the back because our mothers taught us never to claim the best seats or make ourselves the center of attention. Maybe it’s selfish: We want to be able to skip out early. Whatever the reason, it causes a practical problem: The front seats are always empty, creating a gulf between the Lord’s table and the Lord’s people. And latecomers stand in the back rather than march up to the front where everyone can see that they’re late. Let’s show some hospitality here! Let’s fill the church up from the front to the back, leaving the back rows for those who come later or late. And let’s fill each row from the center: If you’re the first one in a row, don’t hug the end (unless you’re a minister and will need to get in and out). Move into the middle so that others may come and sit beside you. Filling in the front seats first isn’t proud or arrogant. It’s part of the ministry of hospitality that all of us who are baptized are called to exercise. It’s a simple act of kindness that helps the church to gather better around the Lord, so that we may give God thanks and praise.
