Page 3: ST. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH · our day. Life is an adventure, a fascina ng journey. Our God is a God of many surprises. We are to expect the unexpected. That unexpected may be a happy

To wait is difficult. There is too much to be done and too li le me to do it. As we grow older there does not seem to be enough me for all this wai ng. And yet when we take a long look at crea on, we realize that we must wait. The seasons wait to change. Night waits for day. Love waits for a lover and even God waits for a change of heart.

Today, Jesus is trying to point out how important it is “to wait in holy expecta on,” that the Lord of Life comes not only at our death but also at each and every moment of our day. Life is an adventure, a fascina ng journey. Our God is a God of many surprises. We are to expect the unexpected. That unexpected may be a happy experience or it may be one filled with tears and sorrow. Our God is there in all those bad mes as well as the good mes we enjoy. We need to be ready to greet Him as He reveals Himself from moment to moment.

The five foolish women did not expect to run out of oil because they did not plan for the late arrival of the groom. They were caught unprepared and they missed the celebra on. They were not ready, perhaps forge ul, maybe not caring enough, certainly not expec ng the unexpected.

You and I are called to be people of faith, knowing the Lord is in our midst, wai ng to respond to His call. As we wait for his coming we need to be sensible to the changes God is asking us to make. So o en we think God expects great and wonderful things and we don’t feel that we are able to accomplish such great tasks. But it is the li le things in life that really ma er for His kingdom. It is that wai ng in pa ence, a word of praise, a smile of friendship, a merciful forgiveness, a compassionate touch or pat on the back, an a tude of trust and confidence no ma er how difficult life becomes. You and I are to be signs of God’s presence to all who are in any need whatsoever. That demands the very best in us, a trus ul vigilance, and a pa ent wai ng.

Wai ng, wisdom, listening, vigilance and a greater awareness. These have meaning in terms of our prayer life. Prayer really is the gentle, daily prac cing of the awareness and presence of our God. We are to be quiet and a en ve to His loving care and concern for all that He has created. We are to be people of hope who realize that the dark storms of life give way to a new light and a new day. In our busy and hurried world, you and I are to be people who wait for the Lord, people who wait on each other.

ANSWER: When we are at Mass, a er the consecra on of the Eucharist and the praying of the Our Father we find ourselves preparing to receive Jesus himself in the Eucharist. The priest shows the people the host and the chalice and says, “Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.” In response, we say, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” Without understanding the context, this wording can seem quite strange.

If we turn to Mathew’s Gospel, we witness an encounter between Jesus and a Roman centurion in which the centurion asks Jesus for the favor of having Jesus heal his servant. In this encounter, we see something important: the centurion embodies an acute humility. Even though he is bold enough to ask the Lord for a favor, he nevertheless realizes that such a favor can only be an undeserved gi . At this point in Ma hew’s Gospel we hear these pivotal words: “The centurion said in reply, ‘Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.’” (Mt 8:8) These are words that recognize the undeserved gi of Jesus’ presence.

As we approach the Eucharist at each Mass, we echo the words of the centurion. In doing so, we also echo the humility of the centurion. We recognize our unworthiness to approach the Lord, but we also recognize our need for the Lord. The amazing thing about Chris anity is that we have a Lord who wants us to be bold enough to recognize our unworthiness, but to go beyond it and reach out for him anyway. The Lord wants to enter under the roof of the house of our souls – we need only open the door.

QUESTION: In the prayer before communion at Mass, why do we say, “Lord I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof”?

INTRODUCING OUR NEW PASTORAL COUNCIL CO-LIAISONS: OGECHI AKALEGBERE & RONALD MONTANO

The Holy Father has asked young adults in the Church to share their input in prepara on for the 2018 Fall Synod on Young People, the Faith, and Discernment. Pope Francis is calling the Church to both listen to as well as to engage the gi s and talents of the young.

As a parish, with a new vision, we have the unique opportunity to do the same! I am pleased to introduce our new co-liaisons for our Saint Rose Pastoral Council, Ogechi Akalegbere and Ron Montano. They are both ac ve leaders in the Church, generously serving with their gi s and talents.

Please join me in welcoming, suppor ng, and praying for them as they take on this new leadership role of service. I look forward to collabora ng with them and wonderful members of the Pastoral Council.
