Thoughts from the Second Floor Front Easter Sunday April 1, 2018

Resurrexit Sicut Dixet! He has risen as He said! Because of what we celebrate today, all things are now different. The one entity that has draped the human condition in fear and darkness is now conquered through the life-giving sacrificial death of Jesus. The events of the Triduum leading up to the celebration of the Easter Vigil are an annual display of the depth of God’s willingness to do for us what no one could do for himself or herself. Thursday, we sat with our Lord in awe at the wondrous gift He has given us in the Eucharist. On Friday we walked in sad silence as we accompanied Him up that hill of Calvary and down again to the tomb. In Holy Fear we waited in that upper room with the 11 and Mary and others. Uncertain, disappointed, confused, angry – these are all the emotions and responses we have when death comes into our life. Reflect on the way you were when you experienced the death of a parent, a spouse, a friend or relative. It is difficult to put those emotions aside, and in reality, we should not. Grieving is an important manifestation of love. Now, through it all, with a powerful ascent of our intellect and will, we are called to incarnate the language of St. Paul we hear today from his letter to the Colossians.

….you were raised with Christ, seek what is above… Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ your life ap-pears, then you too will appear with him in glory. Because of what we celebrate today, all things are now different. When I was Academic Dean in

the College Division at St. Charles Seminary, I would regularly ask the professors a direct question each year: What difference will the treatment make? With all their accumulated and assembled knowledge of esoteric matters of Philosophy, Latin, Greek, Literature and a number of other disciplines, how will it af-fect the formation of the seminarians in their classes? What difference will it make? The goal, of course, was to provide a formation program that at the end of the day would bring about a priest with the heart of Christ.

Jesus has offered us more than an academic experience. If what we celebrate is reduced to that, we have robbed ourselves of the grace offered to us. What we celebrate is not simply a notion or idea. What we celebrate in Jesus is not, what the neo-Gnostics and neo-Pelagianists offer, a Jesus who can only be approached through special knowledge or a Jesus who is a fine moral example but incapable of providing us with anything more.

Because of what we celebrate today, all things are now different. How will that difference be mani-fest in and through your life? Do not think on a grand scale. Start small. Start with the relationships you now have – family, friends, colleagues, co-workers, classmates. Expand the lived experience of your dis-cipleship to others. When was the last time you gave of your time to a worthy cause? When was the last time you gave financial support to a ministry that provides for others? When was the last time you gave yourself? The opportunity to do good does not knock at your door; it knocks at your teeth.

In your celebration today with family and friends, see in them the goodness of our God who has done so much for us. Carry that thought with you when you return to work or school or wherever it is that you live your ordinary life that now is not ordinary at all. Now it is eternal.

Faithfully, Msgr. Diamond

Page Three Easter Sunday - The Resurrection of the Lord

Please welcome our new Catholics who were received this Easter into the church:

Sacrament of Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation: Paul Gushurst ♦ Debra Thistlewood ♦ Milia Rayer

Easter Morning As the world sings triumphant cries to heaven over death that You conquered, help us, Lord, tomorrow as well. When the dresses are put away and the candy is all eaten and on with life we go, let us not forget.

The celebration of Your Resurrection over death is a celebra-tion of life that should continue well beyond the sunrise service and the music, rehearsed for days prior; it is beyond the sign of spring, beyond the lily, beyond new lambs grazing in open fields.

Resurrection is a daily celebration over fear, man's greatest and most powerful enemy. Fear of tomorrow, fear of our yesterdays, fear of what shall become of our young, our old, our unborn. Resurrection is replacing fear with physical action.

This alone, the most touching and profound of Your signs that fear is dead and belief in You brings not just hope, but life.

What better living parable could You have brought? All fear death. All. Even in the garden, You took on our fear if only for moments, it was as real as our fears can be real and You knew then that this single enemy must be destroyed.

And, You sacrificed Your life, leaving those who had been comfort, and follower; You left them behind, to conquer fear.

I shall cling to this now and the tomorrows given me.

Peace and Thanksgiving lifted unto You.

Amen.

Excerpts from Laudato Si’, ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME:

God has written a precious book, “whose letters are the multi-tude of created things present in the universe.” “From pano-ramic vistas to the tiniest living form, nature is a constant source of wonder and awe. It is also a continuing revelation of the divine.” “To sense each creature singing the hymn of its existence is to live joyfully in God’s love and hope.” This Contemplation of creation allows us to discover in each thing a teaching which God wishes to hand on to us, since “for the believer, to contemplate creation is to hear a mes-sage…that alongside revelation…in sacred Scripture, there is a divine manifestation in the blaze of the sun and the fall of night.” Hence, there is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person’s face. The ideal is not only to pass from the exterior to the interior to discover the action of God in the soul, but also to discover God in all things. Saint Bonaventure teaches: “Contemplation deepens the more we feel the working of God’s grace within our hearts, and the better we learn to encounter God in crea-tures outside ourselves.” It is in the Eucharist that all that has been created finds its greatest exaltation. Grace…found unsurpassable expression when God himself became man and gave himself as food for his creatures. The Lord…chose to reach our intimate depths through a fragment of matter. He comes not from above, but from within, in the living center of the universe, the overflow-ing core of love and inexhaustible life. Joined to the incarnate Son, present in the Eucharist, the whole cosmos gives thanks to God. Indeed the Eucharist is itself an act of cosmic love: “Yes, cosmic! Because…the Eucharist is always in some way celebrated on the altar of the world.” The Eucharist joins heaven and earth; it embraces and penetrates all creation. On Sunday, our participation in the Eucharist has special im-portance. Sunday…is meant to be a day which heals our rela-tionships with God, with ourselves, with others and with the world. Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, the “first day” of the new creation, whose first fruits are the Lord’s risen hu-manity, the pledge of the final transfiguration of all created reality. Jesus came in the human flesh to witness to God’s divine na-ture and beauty in all creation, “birds of the air,” “lilies of the field,” etc. Jesus takes on all aspects of our true humanity, not just male or female, but all flesh and material beings. As such, His resurrection serves to provide hope to all creation…that salvation is for all of creation to return back to God.

CELEBRATION OF THE SACRED MYSTERIES

SACRAMENTS Sacrament of Penance - Saturday at 4:00 pm or anytime by appointment

Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick - Please notify the Parish Life Center when a relative is sick or hospitalized. The sacraments of Penance, Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick are a joy and privilege to administer. If you know you are going to the hospital for surgery, please notify Msgr. Diamond and he will be glad to Anoint you after Mass.

Sacrament of Baptism - Congratulations! In co-operation with God’s creative love, you have given your child breath and now you wish to give them Re-al Life through the sacrament of Baptism. You will be your child’s first teacher in the ways of the Faith. During your pregnancy, to help you prepare for this responsibility, we ask you to stop in the Parish Life Center and receive the booklet “You gave them breath, Now give them life.” This booklet will pro-vide information needed to begin your preparation for the celebration of Baptism. Please contact the Parish Life Center at (610) 459-2502 for further information.

Sacrament of Marriage - The love between a husband and wife images for us the love of Christ and his church. What a powerful and awesome thing is the call to the sacrament of Marriage! To assist cou-ples to enter this sacrament, the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia requires at least six months of formation prior to the reception of the sacrament. Those who wish to receive the Sacrament - please call the Parish Life Center to make an appointment to see Msgr. Dia-mond to begin your sacramental preparation. Congratulations for responding to God’s call to Love.

Sacrament of Holy Orders - Jesus said that we are to pray to the Lord of the harvest, that workers will be sent at harvest time. The best way to promote vocations to the diaconate and priesthood is to invite those men whom you would consider would make a good priest or deacon. If you feel the Lord might be asking you to be a priest or deacon, Msgr. Diamond or one of the Deacons will always be available to an-swer your questions and give direction.
