Third Sunday after the Epiphany 24 January 2021 8:00 and 10:30 A.M.
Welcome! Even if no one else here knows you, our Savior Jesus knows you by name. In His name we welcome you. May
you find God’s peace and our friendship here.
We love to have Children with us in the pews for worship.
We love babies in worship too because our Savior said, “Let the
little children come to me.” When babies need to cry loudly, the
Parent’s Room (just outside our worship area) is a good place
for them to let it all out so the rest of the worshipers can focus on
God’s Word. Then come back so we can all worship together.
If your hearing aids have T-Coils, set them to “on” and the
service will be piped wirelessly to your ears.
Generally, only members of St. John’s participate in the
Lord’s Supper here. We wouldn’t presume to ask you, our
honored guests, to stand with us until you know what we stand
for. We hope you appreciate the sincere love we are showing
you by following this Scriptural practice. We consider it a good
thing when someone wants to receive the Lord’s Supper with us,
and we’ll gladly work with you so you may attend the Lord’s
Supper as soon as possible.
We would love to stay in contact with you. You may find a
ministry card on the pew in front of you and fill it out. God
bless your week. Come hear God’s Word with us again!

Pre-worship Pondering: —Thomas H Kingo
Praise to You and adoration, blessed Jesus, Son of God, Who, to serve Your own creation, came to share our flesh and blood. Guide me that I never may from Your fold or pastures stray, But with zeal and joy exceeding follow where Your steps are leading.
Hold me ever in Your keeping; comfort me in pain and strife. In my laughter and my weeping be with me throughout my life. Give me greater love for You, and my faith and hope renew In Your birth, Your life, and passion, in Your death and resurrection.
Divine Service I
Worship Theme Follow the Lord for Life
Hymn #463
1. Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild,
restless sea. Day by day His voice invites us,
saying, “Christian, follow Me!”
2. As the first disciples heard it by the Galilean Lake,
turned from home and toil and kindred,
leaving all for His dear sake.
4. In our joys and in our sorrows,
days of toil and hours of ease,
still He calls, in cares and pleasures,
“Christian, love Me more than these!”
5. Jesus calls us! In Your mercy,
Savior, help us hear Your call;
give our hearts to Your obedience,
serve and love You best of all.
Invocation Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Congregation: Amen.

Worship Dialog with Confession and Absolution
P: The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. [John 1:14]
C: We have seen His glory, the glory of the one-and-only-
Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
P: It’s a good thing Jesus came to save us. We have not lived up to the
standard that God set. For God said: [Leviticus 19:2]
C: “Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.”
P: Our God is righteous and holy. But our God is also merciful
[Deuteronomy 4:31]. Let us approach His throne of grace and ask Him
to show us mercy once again. [see Hebrews 4:16] O LORD, we have sinned and done wrong.
C: We have been wicked and have rebelled; we have turned
away from Your commands and laws. We have not
listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your
name to us. LORD, we are covered with shame because of
our unfaithfulness to You. [drawn from Daniel 9]
P: O merciful and forgiving LORD, in keeping with all Your righteous
acts, turn away Your anger and Your wrath from Your people.
C: For Your sake, O LORD, look with favor on us. We do not
make requests of You because we are righteous, but
because of Your great mercy. O LORD, listen! O LORD,
forgive! O LORD, hear and act! O God, do not delay,
because Your people bear Your Name. [drawn from Daniel 9]
P: Our gracious God has shown us His mercy by giving His only Son to
save us from our sins. Because of Christ’s perfect life as your
Substitute, God sees you as having lived a perfect life. Because of
Christ’s innocent death as your Substitute, God sees the penalty for
your sins as having been paid in full. That is why, as a servant of
Christ and by the authority He gave to the Christian Church on
earth, I can and do assure you that all your sins are forgiven in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen.
P: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

We Prepare to Hear God’s Word
Prayer of the Day P: Almighty God, You sent Your Son to proclaim Your kingdom and to
teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of Your Spirit so that
we may follow His example, bringing good news to the afflicted
conscience, binding up the brokenhearted, and proclaiming liberty
to those held captive by sin.
C: We ask it through Your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who
lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever. Amen.

We Listen to God’s Word
Old Testament Lesson Jonah 3:1-5,10 1Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: 2“Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the
message I give you.” 3Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and
went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city—a
visit required three days. 4On the first day, Jonah started into
the city. He proclaimed: “Forty more days and Nineveh will
be overturned.” 5The Ninevites believed God. They declared
a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on
sackcloth. 10When God saw what they did and how they
turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not
bring upon them the destruction he had threatened.
P: Jesus shows His glory in the kind of people He calls as His followers
and in using the gospel to make them willing.
C: He called us. We are willing to follow Jesus. He is our all
in all.
Verse of the Day John 8:12 P: Alleluia! Praise the Lord! Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world.
C: Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will
have the light of life.” Alleluia!
Epistle Lesson 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 29What I mean, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on
those who have wives should live as if they had none; 30those
who mourn, as if they did not; those who are happy, as if they
were not; those who buy something, as if it were not theirs to
keep; 31those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed
in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
P: You have heard the Word of the Lord.
C (speaks): Thanks be to God!

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven
and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again
from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will
come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection
of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
Hymn of the Day #452
1. Let us ever walk with Jesus,
follow His example pure,
flee the world which would deceive us
and to sin our souls allure.
Ever in His footsteps treading,
body here, yet soul above,
full of faith and hope and love,
let us do the Father’s bidding.
Faithful Lord, abide with me.
Savior, lead; I follow Thee.
2. Let us suffer here with Jesus,
to His image e’er conform;
heaven’s glory soon will please us,
sunshine follow on the storm.
Though we sow in tears of sorrow,
Page 8
we shall reap in heav’nly joy,
and the fears that now annoy
shall be laughter on the morrow.
Christ, I suffer here with Thee;
there, oh, share Thy joy with me.
4. Let us gladly live with Jesus.
Since He’s risen from the dead,
death and grave must soon release us.
Jesus, Thou art now our head.
We are truly Thine own members;
where Thou livest, there live we.
Take and own us constantly,
faithful Friend, as Thy dear brethren.
Jesus, here I live to Thee, also there eternally.
Sermon Mark 1:14-20 14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee,
proclaiming the good news of God. 15“The time has come,” he
said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the
good news!” 16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he
saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake,
for they were fishermen. 17“Come, follow me,” Jesus said,
“and I will make you fishers of men.” 18At once they left their
nets and followed him. 19When he had gone a little farther, he
saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat,
preparing their nets. 20Without delay he called them, and they
left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and
followed him.

Create in Me a Pure Heart
Prayers of the Church spoken by the pastor Lord’s Prayer
C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who
trespass against us,
And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

A note about Holy Communion to all communicants: Members of
our sister churches in the WELS & ELS are welcome to participate
with members of St. John’s. At the appropriate time the pastor will
direct you to peel off the cover from the “bottom” of the plastic
chalice to reveal the bread. Hold up your plastic chalice so the pastor
can see when everyone is ready. Then he’ll say Jesus’ words of
institution for the bread, and we’ll all eat at the same time. Then peel
off the cover from the wine and hold up your plastic chalice. The
pastor will say Jesus’ words of institution for the wine, and we’ll all
drink at the same time. After the benediction someone will come
around to pick up the material for disposal.

Preface
P: The Lord be with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.
C: We lift them up to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.
C: It is good and right so to do.

through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lived among us as a human being
and revealed His glory as Your only Son, full of grace and truth.
Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise
Your holy name and join their glorious song:

Hymn #85
4. Sing to the Lord a mighty song;
sing to His name, His glories tell!
Sing, heav’nly hosts, your praise prolong,
and all on earth, your anthem swell!
“Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain!”
Forever let the song ascend!
“Worthy the Lamb enthroned to reign!
Glory and pow’r!” Amen! Amen!

Since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness
of what was preached to save those who believe.
OLD CARDS A group within St. John’s has a way to use greeting cards (Christmas, birthday, thank you, etc) for lifting the spirits of others. It doesn’t matter if the cards are used or unused, you may leave them with Krissa in the church office. Thank you for your help!

corner of our school that people are now talking about getting more windows in our school replaced. A “Windows and Siding” fund was set up a while back to receive any special gifts that anyone wants to give toward replacing the windows in our school or the siding on the school. Please make your intentions clear if you want your special gift to go into the “Windows and Siding” fund. If someone wanted to coordinate the effort, it might be possible to arrange for an “individual window replacement” approach through Thrivent Action Grants.
THE GREATEST SERMON? Some have called Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount” in Matthew 5 through 7 the greatest sermon ever preached. Beginning Monday, December 28, Pastor Kom from Ascension in Rochester will be walking through this important part of God’s Word in a series of weeknight devotions. This devotion series will end on February 16, the day before Ash Wednesday. Each video devotion is four or five minutes long and is posted at 6 PM each evening. You can find the devotions on Ascension’s website (www.ascensionrochester.org). Click on the green “Gospel Goodnight” box to access them.
Lessons on the Liturgy Q: “What should I do after we sing the final hymn and there’s
music playing?”
A: Greet your neighbor. It’s also ok to sit quietly and think about what you heard and sang today. Ask the Lord to let His Word work effectively in your heart. Ask Him to help you believe and do what was discussed during worship. You could also pray for someone who needs help. If you don’t know what to pray for, turn to pages 10-11, 134-139 in the front of the hymnal for a variety of pre-printed prayers.
