Father Christmas and his little helper, Evie the Elf took refuge from the torrential rain that hit Fontwell Park Racecourse just in time for last year’s Santa Fun Run. Works in all media can be submitted and last year’s exhibitionincluded paintings, sculpture, photography and collage; aslong as the work is no more than 80cm at its largest point itcan be entered. Artists of all ages and all levels can take part–it really is an ‘Open’ competition – and those lucky enough tobe selected will have their work displayed in Chichester’s veryown Pallant House Gallery. Our team of judges will thenaward prizes to their favourite works from the exhibition.Entries close on Wednesday 31st March and the exhibition ofselected works will be open to the public at Pallant HouseGallery from Friday 4th June – Thursday 1st July. For further information and to enter online visitwww.openart.stwh.co.uk, email [email protected] call 01243 755181.

Last year the first St Wilfrid’s Open Art Competition, inassociation with Pallant House Gallery, was a great successand this year looks set to be even bigger and better. In 2009the competition attracted submissions of over 250 art worksfrom 164 different artists, raising £6,500, and we hope tobuild on this for 2010.

Serving hot mulled wine to customers is not usually on thecards for Deputy Trading Manager Juliet Blackstaffe and hermother-in-law Audrey Blackstaffe who, as a volunteer, worksonce a week in the Donations Centre in Summersdalehelping to sell good quality books and furniture. However that’s what the two of them got up to whenthey, along with staff from Summersdale Garage, invitedold and new customers to join them in an afternoon ofChristmas festivities.Special guest appearances from local author Kate Mosse andSanta and his two favourite reindeer Blitzen and Star, theRegis Pom Pom dancers and Punch and Judy helped tomake the afternoon a great success. £820 was raised whichwill be split between St Wilfrid’s and the Snowdrop Trust.

Full of Christmas Cheer Give us a break!Hard hats and hammers were the order of the day whenHospice furniture shop manager, Tina Varney and her crewbroke through the ‘party’ wall to the shop next door inClarence Gate, Bognor Regis. The large square unit is ideal for displaying room sets whichgive shoppers a better idea of how the furniture will look intheir own home. Tina can’t wait to show off the extra space to all hercustomers and says, “The shop looks fantastic, the extraspace has made it really open and light and we can nowstock a wider range of donated furniture.”Do pop along to the shop which is open between 9.00 am –5.00 pm six days a week – you might just pick up a bargain.

Counting jigsaw pieces, checking clothes are in size order, serving customers and sorting out other people’s clothing isall in a day’s (or maybe a couple of hours) work for 15 yearold schoolgirl Alice McIlwraith.Alice, who is a pupil at Philip Howard School in Barnham, iscurrently undertaking the first level of her Duke ofEdinburgh award. To achieve her bronze award Alice has tocomplete a personal programme of activities in foursections which include helping people in the community, getting fitter, developing skills and an expedition. How better to help people than by volunteering at one of StWilfrid’s Hospice shops! Alice’s Mum contacted MargaretDowling, Manager at Barnham to ask if she would considerAlice as a volunteer. Margaret invited Alice to come alongand have a look around and she has never looked back.Alice says, “At first I was a bit worried about working in theshop and messing up the till or breaking it.” And has she?“No!” Alice so enjoys working at the shop that after sixmonths she has chosen to continue working for a couple ofhours each week. She continues, “It’s really worth doing. I get to meet peopleand learn new skills which I can put into practice when Iam older and looking for a job. All the staff and volunteersmake me feel so welcome. If younger people want to workin one of the Hospice shops then they should.”Manager Margaret says, “We would love to have more

There’s more tolife than just beinga couch potato

younger people working with us. They have different ideasto us oldies and it is surprising how well it works when wemix all the ideas together.”Margaret’s niece, Madeleine Cork has been working at theshop for the past 18 months. Also working towards herDuke of Edinburgh award, Madeleine used to work everySaturday but, for the time being, is now studying hard forher ‘A’ levels. Both these girls know that volunteering has helped themdevelop new skills, fulfil their potential and, also, will lookgood on their CVs.If you could spare a few hours each week to help in any ofour shops or the Donations Centre, please contact TradingManager Siobhan Robinson on 01243 755805 or DeputyTrading Manager, Juliet Blackstaffe on 01243 776712.

Many people would have regarded retirement at the age of62 as just that, getting up late and having breakfast whenmost people have lunch. Not John Rigg, who has just diedat the age of 95. Within two years, and after a lifetime inKent he and his wife, Pauline moved to Pagham where hejoined PagMen and put himself forward for local councilelections. And then came his greatest challenge, theHospice. He was, for many years, the driving force behind the BognorSupport Group and its many fund-raising activities. TheBognor shop was created after a particularly successfuljumble sale in empty premises in the town centre. Whenthe Hospice finally opened in 1987, he stayed on foranother six years until 1993 as one of the Directors. His tireless, unstinting efforts to raise money forSt Wilfrid’s Hospice will be what many today will rememberhim for and it is difficult to find a finer legacy to thecommunity in which he lived and a finer tribute to him. Our Hospice at Home service has beenrunning since May last year and the reportfrom the first six months was presented tothe Board of Trustees in December. I ampleased to report that the team have caredfor well over 100 patients and the impactof their work has been significant. One aimof the service is to increase choicesavailable to patients under our care and itwas good to know that 90% of thepatients supported by Hospice at Homewere able to die in the place of theirchoice. Although many people wish to dieat home a significant number do wish todie in the Hospice so all areas of ourservice will continue to play an importantrole in the care and support we offerpeople towards the end of their lives. As part of the evaluation we asked theloved ones of patients cared for by theHospice at Home team for their feedbackand some of the comments made wereas follows:

‘My family and I were amazed at howquickly the team of Hospice at Home carersbecame part of our daily life. They werealways so professional, treated my husbandwith the utmost respect, ensured his dignitywas maintained and showed great kindnessand concern. They were an incrediblesupport to us all. Many thanks.’

‘It was like two giant arms encircling all ofus. They brought calm to what was utterchaos in our home.’

I would like to thank all the Hospice atHome team and in particular Jane Cousinsthe Team Leader for the excellent carethey have given to patients and familiesand to everyone who has supported thedevelopment of this new service whichnow forms an essential and highly valuedpart of the care that St Wilfrid's can offerthose in our local community.Alison Moorey
