From the Pastor: We are entering the so-called “holiday season,” – Thanksgiving, Advent, Immaculate Conception of Mary, Our Lady of Gua-dalupe, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. These special days in the midst of

the darkening days of late Fall and early Winter give us reason to rejoice, reflect, give thanks, love, and share generously. This period of weeks offers us a light shining in the darkness. Of course, the very purpose of Advent, starting December 2nd, helps us to see all the reasons for which the darkness does not overwhelm us. The “darkness” is not just the diminishment of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, but also the darkness of worry, depression, doubt, and sadness. The themes of Advent remind us that there is a light in the world that expels darkness. We call this light “hope.” Hope, longing, expectation, and desire for the good, both today and into the future, prepare us to see the light of the past which shines even into our present age. We call the light and hope of the past and fu-ture, Jesus the Christ. In the first two weeks of Advent we review the history of the people of Israel and their hope for a savior, a messiah. We see how their hopes were fostered and grew over many centuries. The proph-ets of Israel spoke of such a savior as Wonder Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). In the birth of Jesus of Nazareth is the fulfillment of their hope. These days we look to the teachings and life of Jesus the Christ for relief and strength. When the world tells us to “hope” in the newest technological advance, or in a powerful worldly leader, or to hope that we accumulate much money and possessions, we discover that the world is deceiving us. Then we begin to see with more certainty that Jesus’ mes-sage of humble service of others, generosity toward those in need, forgiveness of others, and love for others and concern for their needs even before our own, is what is most valuable and enduring. This is the “light” that shines in the darkness. This holiday season and especially this Advent, we are invited to reflect and meditate upon the above truth – Christ is our light! For us a Savior has been born. He is already born! We are to discover and rediscover how important is that truth for our faith. May you have a Blessed and Joyful Thanks-giving Day!

“Helpers with Hammers” We need volunteers who can direct the work of U.S. and Caribbean volunteer teams as we build simple, 12’ x 16’ wooden houses for families in St. Vincent, St. Lucia and Dominica. The island of Dominica was devastated just a year ago by Hurricane Maria. We replaced a few houses in April, 2018, but we will have more work to do in 2019. We have amateur volunteers who love building and donors willing to provide materials to build the houses. Mensaje de nuestro Párroco: Estamos entrando en los llamados "días festivos", Acción de Gracias, Adviento, Inmaculada Concepción de María, Nuestra Señora de

Guadalupe, Navidad y Año Nuevo. Estos días especiales en medio de los oscurecidos días de fines del otoño y principios del invierno nos dan motivos para alegrarnos, reflexionar, dar gracias, dar amor y compartir generosamente. Estas pocas semanas nos ofrecen una luz que brilla en medio de la oscuridad. Por supuesto, el propósito de Adviento, a partir del 2 de diciembre, es demostrarnos todas las razones por las cuales la oscuridad no nos abruma. La "oscuridad" no es solo la disminución de la luz del día en el hemisferio norte, sino también la oscuridad de la preocupación, la depresión, la duda y la tristeza. Los temas de Adviento nos recuerdan que hay una luz en el mundo que expulsa la oscuridad. Llamamos a esta luz "esperanza". La esperanza, el anhelo, la expectativa y el deseo por el bien, tanto hoy como en el futuro, nos preparan para ver la luz del pasado que brilla incluso en nuestra era actual. Llamamos a la luz y la esperanza del pasado y del futuro, Jesús el Cristo. En las primeras dos semanas de Adviento leemos la historia del pueblo de Israel y su esperanza de un salvador, un mesías. Vemos cómo sus esperanzas fueron fomentadas y crecieron durante muchos siglos. Los profetas de Israel hablaron de un salvador como el Consejero Admirable, El Heroe Divino, El Padre Eterno y El Príncipe de la Paz (Isaías 9:5). Con el nacimiento de Jesús de Nazaret se encarno la razón de su esperanza. En estos días, buscamos alivio y fortaleza en las enseñanzas y la vida de Jesús, el Cristo. Cuando el mundo nos dice que “esperemos” el nuevo aparato de la tecnología más reciente, o en un líder mundial poderoso, o que esperemos a que acumulemos mucho dinero y posesiones, descubrimos que el mundo nos está engañando. Entonces comenzamos a ver con más certeza que el mensaje de Jesús de servir a los demás humildemente, ser generosos con los mas necesitados, perdonar a los demás y amar a nuestro prójimo y preocuparnos por sus necesidades incluso antes que las nuestras, es lo más valioso y duradero. Esta es la "luz" que brilla en la oscuridad. Este día festivo y especialmente este Adviento, estamos invitados a reflexionar y meditar sobre la verdad anterior: ¡Cristo es nuestra luz! Para nosotros ha nacido un Salvador. ¡Ya ha nacido! Debemos descubrir y redescubrir cuán importante es esa verdad para nuestra fe. ¡Que tengan un bendecido y feliz día de acción de gracias! Paz, Pr.
