FORT CONCHO Established in 1867, along the banks of the Concho River, Fort Concho was built to protect frontier settlements, patrol and map the

vast West Texas region, and quell hostile threats in the area. Constructed for the most part of native limestone, Fort Concho consisted of at least 40 buildings and covered more than 1000 acres. Fort Concho served as regimental headquarters for some of the most famous frontier units like the 4th and 10th Cavalry. Notable

military commanders such as Ranald Mackenzie, Benjamin Grierson, and William 'Pecos Bill' Shafter commanded here. Elements of all four regiments of the Buffalo Soldiers were stationed at the post during its active period.

At full strength Fort Concho supported 350-400 men made up of four companies of infantry and four troops of cavalry, staff officers and support personnel.

By 1889, the railroad reached the town and the fort was no longer needed. In June 1889 the last soldiers marched away from Fort Concho and the fort was deactivated. Soon after, the fort property was absorbed into the growing city. After 22 years Fort Concho’s role in the settling of the Texas frontier was over.

In the late 1920s, the effort began to save the heritage the fort represents and preservation and restoration work began. Nine decades later, Fort Concho is among the best preserved forts west of the Mississippi. Its annual programs, tours, events and activities serve over 60,000 guests. The fort has been recognized by local, state and national agencies for public service, excellence in programming and educational activities.

Today, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark encompasses most of the former army post and includes twenty-three original and restored fort structures. It is one of San Angelo’s best assets and a true treasure for our community. It represents an important part of both American and regional history. We are grateful to receive almost one-third of our budget from the City of San Angelo. However, that still leaves a large amount to be raised independently to further our mission of preserving the National Historic Landmark and educating our youth. Fundraisers such as Christmas at Old Fort Concho help us raise the funds that are dedicated to our ongoing educational programs, events, and services that we offer thousands of guests each year. Fort Concho not only offers year round tours of the site to visitors, but also supports area schools with educational activities to help bring the past alive. One way we do this is through our award-winning Frontier School program. We also have programs for all ages, like our twice yearly Speakers Series that is always highly attended.
