WELCOME

This is the first time that the College has been able to provide information about the professional development activities available to staff throughout the coming academic year. Further activities will be planned and publicised according to need, but we hope the sessions on offer will be high quality, informative, helpful to you carrying out your job, and, just as important, fun to attend.

This year we have revised the College induction programme so that new starters have a thorough introduction to the College in order that they can make the max-imum contribution as soon as possible. We have also developed sessions for those people who have assumed new roles within the College. However staff development is not just confined to courses and formal sessions. We will do our best to make sure that all staff have the opportunity to participate in a whole range of devel-opment activities to help them in their current job and prepare them for career progression within the College or elsewhere.

The key principles of our staff development programme are:

• encouraging staff to participate in planned development activities which are relevant to them making a contribution to the achievement of one or more of the College’s strategic priorities• ensuring all staff have an equal opportunity to access staff development relevant to their needs • using the outcomes of performance appraisal to identify development needs • ensuring staff development is of a high quality while being delivered in the most cost-effective way • ensuring all staff receive regular, fair and honest feedback on their performance and advice on their development needs • the identification and dissemination of good practice• training all managers annually on the Performance Appraisal and Development scheme and how to make sure an employee’s development needs are identified.

The Appraisal and Development Scheme will play an important part in identifying further development activities. We intend to develop the staff development area of the Gateway to inform staff of future sessions, provide training materials and to pro-vide external links to websites where staff can access further information on areas of interest.

Learning Squares

H.O.D./Director of SRC Bede Sixth Form will appoint learning square leaders

Learning squares for curriculum staff provide an opportunity to observe the practice of colleagues, share best practice, share reflections and receive/give support to colleagues. The squares will be department or sixth form based in semester 1 and will culminate in a Learning Fair on 13 February 2015. Some learning squares may be organised cross College in semester 2 to maximise the benefit of the best curriculum staff sharing their practice with other staff. The themes for semester 1 learning squares are:

Staff development for business support teams 2014-15

Continuous Professional Development activity for Business Support Teams over the forthcoming academic year will centre on: a) the introduction of Coaching, commencing with training for support team managersb) the identification of best practice of a vocationally specific nature, as practiced by other providers of FE/HE, by industry and through research e.g. the internetc) the identification of CPD requirements on an individual or group basis, based on self-assessment and appraisal outcomesd) the identification of qualifications which may be studied e.g. modules, which assist with the acquisition of specific vocational knowledgee) opportunities for job enrichment/the acquisition of knowledge and skills which broaden the capacity of staff to work within their teams e.g. for covering other staff on a short term basis in the event of staff absencef) identification of opportunities for problem solving through participation in Learning Squares

Statutory and mandatory training

All newly appointed staff will receive mandatory training in safeguarding, health and safety, and equality and diversity as part of their induction programme. All staff are reminded however, that safeguarding training and equality and diversity awareness training must be undertaken annually. Sessions will be provided throughout the year and attendance will be recorded on each employee’s staff profile record maintained by the Human Resources Service. The College’s policies in respect of safeguarding and Equality and Diversity can be found through the home page of the College website. Please note that a member of staff’s attendance at staff development events should be discussed with their line manager, who will wish to ensure that staff are participating fully in the CPD programme.
