D-O MAJOR MEDICAL PLAN BENEFITS AVAILABLE FOR COLLEGE AGE DEshyPENDENTS OF STAFF MEMBERS

Personnel Department Stamford has announced an agreement recently concluded with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company which allows extension of benefi t coverage under the companys maj 0 r medishycal plan to dependent children of D-O staff members between the ages of 19 and 2S years

The agreement permi~ all single and unemshyployed children between their 19th and 23rd birthdays to be registered for all the same beneshyfits received by D-O staff members and their children under 19 years of age The cost of this coverage per individual dependent will be $410 per month and will be the financial responsibility of the dependents staff member parent not of the compan~ which now handles the cost of the plan for staff members and their children under 19 years of age

WHATS NEW WITH YOU

D-O TELL has had li t tle trouble answering this question over the fi fteen months of its existence Your interest in a local house organ was quite high when we began publishing and has continued at a high level since Lately however our task of collecting the news has become a bit less than easy

Our local house organ was not established as a let George do it function but rather as a combined staff contributory effort as well as combined benefit rou personally have a part in it By this we don t mean just reading each issue We know you read it and we are qui te happy wi th D-O TELLs acceptance We mean a real part in producing each issue - telling us what is new with you and your close-by fellow staff memshybers

Our fine staff of reporters are able and willing and reporting the news is their job bllt it is necessarily an extra job wi th them - of secondary importance to thei r regular duties as staff members Frequently they just havent time to contact everyone within their confines and write and submit the news they find also The reporters need your help and for that reason we ask that when you find or hear information of interest to all of us let your nearest reporter or the editor in on it

Also we can use more people who can and will get out the news as staff reporters Our coverage is spread too thin at present with some departshyments receiving no direct coverage at all even though the members of these departments have news and themselves read each issue avidly

How about a helping hand from each of us if not as a reporter then certainly as a contributor We know you think D-O TELL is worthwhile and because it is it is worth our active interest And while youre inspired) let us know what you enjoy reading most

AND NOW FI-FI - CEEJAY

What is Pi-Pi Well it is an abbreviation coined for binaural acoustic preproduction - another electronic marvel recently perfected and now in transi tion between the laboratory and production lines of big radio manufacturers Pi-Pi will soon be available to the home music lover so even if the Joneses have just bought a new super ul trashylinear five hundred dollar Hi-Pi dont be disshymayed In the near future you will be able to bu y a Pi-Pi that will make the most expensive present day Hi-Pi sound like an old hand-wound phonograph

Basically the principle of Pi-Pi is very simple We have two ears and each hears a sound from slightly different angles This gives us an impression of realism and distance just as our two eyes enable us to judge distances and depth

Cover an eye Everything looks flat Ordinary radios televisions and Hi-Pis employ one sound channel which heard with both ears is still without realistic depth just as a photograph even when viewed by both eyes is without depth Thus even the most elaborate Hi-Pi using the usual monaural or single channel sound system can never achieve the realism given by the mirashycle of our two ears

But Pi-Pi can This has already been proved by many people fortunate enough to live within range of those enlightened radio stations (such as WQXR New York) which transmit certain proshygrams stereophonically via their AM medium wave channel and their PM high frequency stashytion using a separate microphone and radio system in each case

Th e resul ts are amazing Try it yourself Everyone has a standard medium wave AM radio so borrow an P M set if you haven t one already Place the two recei vers seven to ten feet apart with the P M set on the left and tune both radios to one of the advertised stereo broadshycasts

Adjust each volume control to obtain proper balan~e and the stereo effect will suddenly beshycome apparent It is almost startling to hear The familiar room will sound quite differently shyprobably much like a cavern with echoes bouncing off the walls Violins and other strings will be heard playing at your elbow The woodwinds and brass will come from somewhere out in front while a sudden crash from the percussion is cershytain to make you jump and swing out only to see an empty corner instead of a swiftly moving drummer beh i nd flashing instruments

The delights of Pi-~i need not be confined to periodic broadcasts for many stereophonic tapes

That beautiful music happens to be my $10 radio NOT your $300 Hi-ri bull II

are now on the market These carry two separate sound tracks and are played on a twin-channel tape machine to give the desired binaural stereo effect However despite their excellence tape machines have never enjoyed the popularity of long-playing phonographs Even stereo tapes have not aroused a mass appeal so far I t was of particular interest therefore to learn that successful stereophonic discs and pick-Ups have been developed so that Pi-Pi once a dream of electronic engineers and music specialists may soon become a standard item in the home

stereophonic disc reproduction using two sepshyarate sound grooves and pick-ups was of course introduced some years ago but owing to its comshyplexity never achieved wide popularity The forthcoming records will have only one groove and pick-up just as in present long-playing discs but the groove will embody two sound tracks The needle will move in two different planes simultaneously up and down as well as from side to side

Responses from each track will be picked up separately and reproduced through a double amplishyfier and speaker system to give the desired stereophonic effect Recent demonstrations of such equipment have aroused much enthusiasm reshygarding the simplicity of operation and the brilliant results Public releases of the new stereo records and equipment are expected in the near future

It is well-known that many music loving Hi-Pi enthusiasts have never been to an actual concert To these people the near-perfect realism of Pi-Pi may at first sound unreal Visits to one or two public perfonnan ces will make them realize how much theyve missed What a fund of pleasure has been made available to the home music lover by our el ect ronic engineer s

BASKETBALL SEASON CLOSES

Due to the number of teams in the YMCA Industrishyal League this year it was impossible to have a complete second half League officials chose to conduct a second round elimination tourney to determine a second half winner Unfortunately our team did not fair well in these playoffs losing to a strong Consolidated Diesel five by a score of 41 to 21

Our teams record this year was one win and seven losses Although this is not a good showshying your reporter feels that the competi tion was the best in the four years Dorr-Oliver has parshyticipated

Several times during the season we showed signs of breaking into the win column but fell short of the mark by the slimest margin possible We did sCore a tremendous upset in the final weeks of the season over highly rated Conde Nast who will long remember their beating by the 0-0 fi ve

Our team rates commendation for their interest and determination certainly - an average of eight men were out in uniform at each game A special note of thanks goes to Deak Bush Gus Phillips Tony Costantino and Don Romanello for their great interest in the team this year

DUCK PIN BOWLING

At the time of this writing there were 2 weeks of bowling remaining in the third round As was predicted by this page the race for team honors was very close

The Sizers on the basisofsome very fine team bowling were in first place by the slimest marshygin with a record of 15 and 6 The Slakers and the Agi tators wi th records of 14 and 7 were tied for second place There is no doubt that these th ree teams wi 11 go down to th e wi re in th ei r bi d for the Third Round Championship

In the race for individual honors which is alshymost as unsure as the battle for team honors it is safe to say that Ed Piorkowski Joe Coppola and John Kelly will receive Individual Achieveshyment Trophies at the banquet this year

For the vumen Nan 0 Connell Edna Mae Mead and

Terry Scofield are current leaders in the hi gh avg high single and high triple race Due to the tightness of the race some excellent bowling was witnessed during the last few weeks Clara Mead made a fine bid for high single and high triple with scoresof99-98-128 a triple of 325 just 4 pins short of the leading hi gh triple Her single of 128 was 2 pins less than Terry Scofields 130

Ed Piorkowski also recorded a fine triple early this month with scores of 130-117-117 for a total pinfall of 364 10 pins less than his reshycord score of 374

Bowlers of the month of March were Joe Coppola with a 143 - 54 pins over his average and Peggy Haupt - 100 - 23 pins over her average

Arrangements have been made by the Banquet Committee to have our annual feast at the Half Way House again this year The general feeling is a good time was had by all in attendance last year An extra added attraction again this year will be the playing and singing of the very talented Colin Hopkins Colin did a nice job last year as his singing was enjoyed by all

HARBINGERS As is the case each year with the melting of the Winter snow and the breaking of Spring training camp by the major league teams the avid softball enthusiasts of the company come out of hibernashytion

Usually the ball players after a very Quick lunch converge on the diamond at the rear of the building at Barry Place to work out Wintershystiffened arms This year the players were more concerned as to the site of the games played in the very popular beer league this season At the time of this writing more than one of the ball players has approached your wri ter on this subshyj ect

League Commissioner Bob Forger has made it known to this page that we will continue to use the Cutex Cubical until the baseball diamond at the companys new home is ready this will no doubt be sometime late in the season With this problem cleared up the beer league battlers can concentrate on their conditioning program or the coming season Bi II Ballo

stereophonic disc reproduction using two sepshyarate sound grooves and pick-ups was of course introduced some years ago but owing to its comshyplexity never achieved wide popularity The forthcoming records will have only one groove and pick-up just as in present long-playing discs but the groove will embody two sound tracks The needle will move in two different planes simultaneously up and down as well as from side to side
