Percentages and Percentiles

Page 14: Standards-Based Assessment Overview K-8 Fairfield Public Schools Fall 2015 10/30/2015

• Parents will receive individual student Smarter Balanced score reports.

• In many cases, performance may look lower on the Smarter Balanced tests than what we are used to seeing on the CMT/CAPT because the standards are more rigorous.

• This does not mean that students are learning less. Rather, it reflects that we set a new, higher bar and this year’s test is a baseline from which our students will grow.

SBA Test

• This shift for our students and teachers begins with the Connecticut Core Standards. The intention is to raise the level of rigor for students to meet the demands of college and the 21st-century workforce.

How Will Scores Be Used to Help Your Child?

1. Multiple test results will allow parents, teachers, and students to know how students are progressing and help teachers adjust instruction.

2. Smarter Balanced and CMT results provide an annual snapshot of student achievement that should be used along with other information, such as class work and other tests, when making educational decisions.

Communication

• The School-Home partnership is based on communication through Infinite Campus, teacher conferences, and ongoing contact between students, teachers and parents.

• At conferences there is much to discuss about a child’s educational growth. We strive to update parents regularly through our websites and Infinite Campus updates. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have questions throughout the school year.

Important Points to Remember

• In our schools we use a variety of assessments to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners in the classroom.

• We measure your child’s progress toward standards with curriculum based measures like classroom activities, day-to-day information gathering, and performance assessments. These are the tools we use to provide data to share on our report cards.

• STAR, i-ready and SBA are not used to inform our elementary progress report or report card.

Standards Based AssessmentsFall 2015The testing window for the fall administration of the district math and language arts screening tools has begun. The tests are administered three times a year (fall, winter, spring) as part of the district’s Scientific Research-Based Intervention (SRBI) plan. These assessments are adaptive, will adjust questions to find students’ strengths, and will also provide teachers with additional feedback on student performance.  The mathematics assessment, i-Ready, will take place during the weeks of September 21 – October 2, 2015. All students in Grades 1-5 will be taking this test during this time period. Kindergarten students will be taking it in the winter and spring. i-Ready assesses students across four domains: Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, Number and Operations, and Geometry. (Kindergarten focuses on foundational skills.) The assessment provides data on what individual students know, what they did not demonstrate, and what they are ready to learn. The STAR reading assessment will take place during the weeks of September 28, 2015 - October 9, 2015. All students in grades 3-5 will be taking this assessment. This assessment provides valid, reliable and actionable data related to reading. This is the first year the Fairfield Public School District is utilizing this assessment. The STAR test will take about 20-30 minutes for each administration and we will be adding Grades K-2 next year.

These assessments are used to inform instruction and assist the district in monitoring the effectiveness of our curricula in reading and mathematics. The scores for your students will be posted on Infinite Campus in the form of percentile rank. These assessments are normed nationally and are only one tool we utilize to improve and inform instruction. These assessments are not used to determine grades on the Fairfield Public School District progress reports.

Additionally we assess writing with our on demand writing prompts, reading with benchmark reading assessments, and math with unit assessments. You classroom teacher may share work samples with you at conferences to demonstrate how your child is doing within our curriculum. These assessments assist teachers with determining grades on the Fairfield Public Schools progress reports.
