HoweverNaidoo said shedidnot report the in-cident because it would just be a “waste of time”.

“Everyone is aware that women are beingtargeted; chain snatching continues onadaily ba-sis.

“The police are aware of the chain snatching, but not a single significant arrest has beenmade.”

Business people are also concerned, sayingshould the current wave of crime continue toescalate, shoppers would rather stay away fromthe CBD and take their business to safer mallsoutside the town.

A prominent businessman, who chose to re-main anonymous, said the KwaDukuza SAPS hasfailed them.

“It is glaring that the KwaDukuza SAPS do notknow how to conduct true policing and keep thecitizens safe in the town.

According to expert reports, the use of hair ex-tensions has risenby almost 50% inSouthAfrica, withthe cost increasing in relation to how naturalthe buyer wants extensions or weaves to look. Some hair extensions can run well over R10 000.

A salon owner who spoke to the Weekly saidthat as many as three people a week come inoffering hair for sale. Thewomansaid she wouldnot buy it because she does not know where itcomes from.

KDM mayor RicardoMthembu has “declaredwar” on the criminals who cut women's hair.

A full investigation has been ordered andMthembu has called the attacks a “psychologicalwar.”

“What kind of way is that to mistreat youngwomen? Young women are sacred,” he said.

Women walking around the KwaDukuza CBD areweary as a new crime trend grips the town.

DESALINATION>> Potential to filter sea water into fresh drinking water

KAVEEL SINGH

UMGENI Water is investi-gating the feasibility oftwo 150 megalitre-per-

day (Ml/d) seawater desalinationplants on the North and SouthCoasts of KwaZulu-Natal.

If found feasible, theseschemes would be constructedso that the northern schemewould provide up to 75Ml/d ofpotable water to iLembe DistrictMunicipality and 75Ml/d toeThekwini’s northern areas suchas Tongaat and Verulam.

The southern scheme wouldprovide approximately 75Ml/d toeThekwini’ssouthernareasandafurther 75Ml/d south to Ugu Dis-trict Municipality.

If either of the schemes aredeveloped theywouldbe the larg-est seawater desalination plantsin the country.

The largest scheme in SouthAfrica at present is 15 Ml/d andthe largest in southern Africa is a45Ml/d plant at Swakopmund inNamibia.

There are, however, manylarge scale desalination plantsaround the world includingSpain, UAE, and Australia withplants up to and exceeding450Ml/d.

The technology that would beused as part of the desalinationprocess is SeaWater Reverse Os-mosis.

Umgeni stakeholder managerShami Hurichunder said a 150Ml/d desalination plant will in-clude large infrastructure to ab-

stract water from the sea and toreturn brine to the ocean.

“The technological compo-nents of a desalination plant areexpensive. Very high pressurepumps are required to pres-surise the seawater to the level atwhich salt can be removed fromthe water.

“With the high corrosivity ofthewater, super duplex stainlesssteels are alsorequired for manyof the components of the plant.”

He said themembraneswhich

ter resources of theMgeni Catch-ment, including the possibility ofdamming the uMkhomazi River.

However, this has its ownhighcapital cost. Desalination is justone of a number of options beinginvestigated by Umgeni Water.

“The technology has now im-proved to the extent wheremanycountries around the world areusing desalination to affordablyproduce potable water.

“Umgeni Water is now under-taking a detailed feasibility study

of two 150Ml/d seawater desali-nation plants and once this studyis completed the capital and op-erating costs will be comparedagainst those of damming theuMkhomazi and transferringthat water to the Mgeni Catch-ment,” said Hurichunder.

He said the economic analy-sis, together with the perceived, environmental impacts, will pro-vide the water board with the in-formation necessary to evaluateimplemenation.

are used in the desalinationprocess are also very expen-sive.

“Consequently our pre-liminary cost estimates varybetween R2.7 and R2.9 bil-lion for a 150 megalitre perday plant depending on sitelocation.”

The operational cost ofdesalinating seawater ishigh compared to conven-tional water treatment.

Hurichunder said SouthAfrica is, in general, awaterscarce country.

“Large dams are re-quired to store the waternecessary to provide citieswith an assurance of supplyduring drought periods. ”

He said with the currentgrowth in water demand, even this scheme will soon, not provide the required as-surance of supply to Dur-ban, Pietermaritzburg andsurrounding areas.

“Other options are avail-able for augmenting thewa-

home improvement tipsPractical decor advice that won’t break the bank

WITH home owners feeling the economic pinch, many are tacklingimprovement projects instead of

moving. The kitchen and bathroom are themost popular rooms for renovations andare also the first rooms scrutinised by potential buyers.

Bathrooms:• Neutral colours remain a firm favou

rite. The majority of bathrooms are currently decorated with tiles and accessoriesin natural stone shades that create a calming atmosphere. A subdued colour paletteis right on trend and with colours such asmurky greys and muddy greens it sitscomfortably with stone colours in thebathroom.

• Black is making a bold design statement in the bathroom, from scattered mosaics to allblack feature walls.

“For those who can’t quite see themselves entirely surrounded by black, the

sensible use of silver, soft pewter, matt andgloss white are all ways of introducing alighter touch,” said Kate van Niekerk, fromTile Africa.

• Pantone named Tangerine Tango, anenergetic reddish orange, as the colour ofthe year for 2012. If you are looking forsomething bold and exclusive, a zesty orange mosaic feature wall might be the perfect fit for your bathroom. Vivid mosaictiles create a dramatic effect if used as asolid block of colour behind the bath andvanity or in the shower.

“If you’re not brave or flamboyantenough for an orange feature wall, try adding mosaics as an edging or border to deliver a quick colour punch,” she says.

• Wet rooms are gaining popularity andtransforming the bathroom from a practical room into a spacious area for the ultimate shower experience. With wet rooms, the shower is no longer contained in a cubi

cle with a shower tray, but spans the wholeroom and water drains away through onedrainage hole.

•Carefulplanningisnecessarytoensurethat this room fulfils its function. Makesure that the walls are properly water

proofedbeforeyoustarttiling.Leakingwater can cause serious damage to the wallsand dampness can affect adjacent rooms. To prevent water from pooling, slope thefloor slightly.

• As a wet room’s shower no longer consists of a glass enclosure, remember to fittowel rails within easy reach of the areanow reserved for the shower, but not toclose as towels can get wet. The basin andtoilet completes the wet room layout.

Kitchens:• Considered as the soul and the social

hub of the household, kitchens now boaststylish appliances and gadgets. With entertainment as one of its key functions, thekitchen is fashionably designed with custommade doors, sleek taps and mixersets and granite, wooden and quartz counter tops.

• If you’re renovating on a shoestringbudget, invest in durable tiles and quality

taps. Tiles are hardwearing and lowmaintenance therefore ideal for a kitchenfloor as it experiences high traffic. Ensurethat you purchase a tile with the correctwear rating, such as a tile with a PEI (Porcelain Enamel Institute) rating of three thatwill be able to withstand the scuffles of everyday family life.

• Decorative mosaic tiles are ideal toadd colour and texture behind the stoveand sink splash backs and allow for aunique style and creativity.

“Use mosaics as a feature, perhaps onone wall.

“If you have a limited budget, cut glassmosaic sheets into narrow strips and adda narrow row as a horizontal borderabove the existing wall tiles,” added vanNiekerk.

• Change outdated fittings such as thekitchen sink and mixer set with modernversions to update the look.

How to paint like a pro_Doing it yourself? Brush up on these basics first

1. Roll paint along the edges forconsistent textureCorners and areas next to trim that arepaintedonly witha brushhaveanoticeably different texture than the surrounding paint. To ensure the finishedtexture will be consistent, brush on thepaint, then immediately roll it out before the paint dries.

Use a smaller roller with a nap that'sthe same thickness that was used forthe rest of the wall. Roll as close as youcan without bumping the opposite wallor slopping paint onto the trim. Finishbrushing on the paint and rolling it outin one area before moving on to thenext section.2. Prime and texture wall patchesto avoid a blotchy finishFreshly painted walls often lookblotchy. The colour is uniform, but thesheen isn't consistent. This usually occurs over the holes and cracks youpatched with a crack filler. The porousfillers absorb the paint, dulling the surface (a problem called "flashing").

When light hits these dull spots, they stick out like a sore thumb. Thesmooth patch also stands out in contrast to the slightly bumpy texture ofthe rest of the wall. A quick coat ofprimer is all it takes to eliminate flashing and texture differences. Primerseals the patch so paint won't sink inand look dull.

To match texture, prime with a roller, feathering out the edges. Choose anap thickness to match the surrounding wall texture.3. Let paint dry, then cut the tapefor a perfect edgeOnce paint is dry, you can't just pull thetape off the trim. Paint forms a film between the wall and the tape, and removing the tape tears pieces of driedpaint off the wall.

So before pulling off the tape, cutit loose. Wait for the paint to completelydry,atleast24hours,thenuseasharputility knife to slice through the film.

Start in an inconspicuous area tomake sure the paint is hard enough toslice cleanly. If you cut the paint whileit's still gummy, you'll make a mess.4. Feather out paint where youcan't keep a wet edgeYou can't cover large areas like ceilings, extratall walls or stairwells in single, continuous strokes, so the best way tominimise lap marks on these areas is to

feather out the paint along the edgesthat you can't keep wet. The thinner, feathered coat of paint will avoid thebuildup that causes the lap mark.

This method also removes all thepaint from the roller, making it mucheasier to clean. To paint a large sectionwithout leaving lap marks, roll thenearly dry roller in different directionsalong the dry edge, feathering out thepaint as you go.

After completing the entire lengthof the wall or ceiling, move to the nextsection and paint over the featherededges. For the second coat, apply thepaint in the opposite direction. Thiscrisscrossing paint application sharplyreduces (if not eliminates) lap marks.5. Use a drop clothIt's a lot easier to prepare for spills andspatters than to wipe them out of yourcarpeting or off your wood floor later. All it takes is canvas drop cloths in yourwork area. The canvas stays in place, soyou don't need to tape it, and you canuse it to cover any surface.

Plastic drop cloths are slippery towalk on or set a ladder on and don'tstay in place. Even worse, paint spills onplastic stay wet, and they can end upon your shoes and get tracked throughthe house. But even with canvas largespills still need to get wiped up rightaway or they'll seep through.

Clean spills with paper towels orcloth rags.6. Preparation is the key to suc-cessOne coat of paint usually won't hide theunderlying colour and sheen on trim. And if you don't sand the surface

smooth between coats, the finish mayhave a grainy texture. For a smooth finish, sand the trim before applying eachcoat of paint.

Sand the trim with a finegrit sanding sponge. Sponges get into creviceswhere sandpaper can't go and applyeven pressure. Then apply the first coatof paint, let it dry at least 24 hours, lightly sand it again for a completelysmooth surface, and apply the secondcoat. After each sanding, vacuum thetrim, then wipe it down with a cloth to

remove dust.7. Mix several cans of paint in alarge bucket for a consistentcolour throughout the roomPaint colour may vary slightly from onecan to the next. If you have to open anew can in the middle of a wall, the difference may be noticeable.

Mixing the paints together eliminates the problem. It's best to estimatethe amount of paint you'll need andmix it in a large bucket. When coverageis difficult to estimate, add more ratherthan less.8. Clean dirty surfaces so paint canform a strong bondBefore painting, clean grimy areas withsugar soap or cleaner intended for prepaint cleaning.

They work well to clean painted, varnished or enamelled surfaces to improve the adhesion of the new paint.

They're ideal for cleaning greasy oroily areas like kitchen and bathroomwalls.Wipe on the cleaner in a circular motionusing a lintfree cloth or abrasive pad.Start at the bottom and work up. Afterthe surface is clean, fill in any nicks andholes, then sand them smooth beforepainting. The cleaners are available atpaint and hardware stores.

I'VE made a lot of big mistakes in mylife. I've hurt people, I've broken things,I've neglected to fulfill responsibilities,

I've said stupid things. You name it, I'vebeen there.

Fortunately, as I grow older I recognisesituations that are mistakes waiting tohappen a little earlier than I used to, and

I'm able to avoid making many of thesame mistakes that I've made before many, not all.

But one of the most liberatingaspects of my life is the fact that I'm nowable to accept my mistakes for what theyare mistakes. Not crimes (in my case, anyway), and not horrible actions thatwill lead to complete social disgrace, justmistakes.

I used to beat myself up over them, and my own mental beatings after themistakes were much worse than the incident itself, or anything that anyone elsecould have done to me as a result of themistake.

If I said something hurtful in the past,I'd feel that the person I hurt would neverwant to talk to me again, that the personwould reject me completely for the rest ofmy life.

The reality of the situation, though,

was that most of the time, the other person forgot about it pretty quickly, and Iwas still agonising over the response ofsomeone who wasn't even thinking ofwhat I did any more.

It was pretty awful, because just like inthe previous example, most people forgotabout my mistake pretty quickly or atleast, they weren't holding it against me.

The time and energy that I wastedagonising over what were minor mistakes, most of the time, could have been spentmuch more effectively on pursuits otherthan making myself miserable.

Nowadays, though, mistakes are animportant part of my life, for they have avery positive effect on me at least twovery positive effects that I can think of.

First off, they help me learn.Once I make a mistake now, I own it Iadmit it and I look at it to figure out whatwent wrong.

It's very important for me to knowwhat goes into a mistake, both for mysake and for the sake of anyone that I'mable to talk to about mistakes.

I learn a lot from my mistakes I learnhow things shouldn't be done, I learnhow I often misjudge situations or people, and I learn that I can't foresee all the results of my actions.

Secondly, mistakes keep me humble, for they always provide me with an opportunity to offer a heartfelt apology.

Apologies are an invitation for forgiveness, and forgiveness is a positive aspectof anyone's life.

Once I apologise for a mistake I'vemade, my relationship with the other person or people strengthens, as long as theother parties are willing to accept theapology.

I no longer agonise over mistakes, andI recognise now just how harmful my own

thoughts were when I used to do that.I kind of wish that I had some of the

lost time and energy back, but I know thatthe agonising was another mistake, onethat took me a little bit longer to learnfrom. Now I take risks and make mistakes, you should too we are human, and boundto make mistakes.

When we do make them, who shouldlearn from them, and accept them as apart of life, a part of who we are and whowe will be.

My guess is that nobody gets throughthis life without making an extremely highnumber of mistakes, and you're no exception.

Another guess is that the wisest amongus are those who have made the most mistakes and who have owned up to andlearned from them all.

Our road to wisdom isn't in a book it's in our own mistakes!
