Called to Worship, Empowered to Serve
Christmas Eve Dinner—Something that has become a tradition in the past few years is back by popular demand! Join members of the Starmount family for dinner from 5:30-6:30. The meal, in its entirety, is provided, but a reservation is required. We ask that you bring a canned good for the Greensboro Urban Ministries. Reservations are now open and will be taken until Sunday, December 17. For more information (or to sign up), please contact Pastor Kathryn or register online.
Dear Starmount Congregation, In last month’s newsletter there was a list of dates for upcoming music of the season. There’s one event that I truly hope you’ll support. Joseph Martin, internationally known composer, and who is leading a festival chorus at Carnegie Hall this month performing his compositions, is coming to Starmount. Most of you know that already, but some of you don’t realize that Joe, in addition to being a world renowned composer, is a world class pianist. Joe will be at Starmount in concert on Saturday, December 16 at 7pm. It is free and open to the public and we’d really like to bring in a good crowd for Joe. So, please come and let all of your friends, neighbors and family know about this great event. This is your chance to hear Joseph Martin, live in concert, playing Christmas and other music on the Starmount Steinway. Hope to see you there! Blessings and thanks, Bob

C LERGY As I make
preparations for
worshipping during
Advent, I found this
Call to Worship,
that I think, reads
well as questions to
think through while
we prepare for the birth of our Savior. It is
written by Ann Siddall and the Stillpoint
Spirituality Centre and Faith Community:
What will set us journeying in search of
the Christ this Advent? How far are we
prepared to go out of our way to look
for the signs of His coming, and to
prepare a path?
How will we travel through this season?
Will we be burdened by responsibilities
and tasks, loaded with others’
expectations, overwhelmed by their
needs? Will we be full of joy or weary of
grief?
What will guide our steps in these
weeks? Will we follow a thread of
longing, the hint of an alternative
pathway, the words and music of the
gathered community?
Sisters and brothers in Christ, Advent
awaits us. Let us place our feet on the
road and begin the journey. May we
find in familiar words, rituals and customs
the birth of the new thing that awaits us.
It has been an honor and pleasure to walk
alongside each and every one of you over
the past 12 months – I have been blessed
with so much by this congregation this
year. I am blessed (and spoiled) to know
you.
Blessings and love,
Pastor Kathryn
Please mark your calendar
for Sunday, December 10th.
A congregational meeting
will be held after worship, to
elect Steve Blackwood as
elder to fill a vacant spot,
and a recommendation
from our Pastoral Nominating
Committee will be
presented. A recommendation means that
our Pastoral Nominating Committee is
placing a name before the congregation
to be considered as the next Pastor of
Starmount Presbyterian Church. Members
of the congregation will receive information
about the candidate and will vote on the
recommendation of the PNC. This is an exciting time for Starmount
Church. Advent means “the arrival of.”
After a period of discernment, preparation
and waiting, it is fitting that we enter into a
time of fulfillment--- a time of new
beginnings and the next chapter in
Starmount’s history. Please join us on
December 10th to make this new chapter a
reality.
Joyfully,
John

member of our congregation to an active

class is forming and starting on Saturday,

2017 Advent Devotional
This year Starmount is joining with many
other congregations by using an advent
devotional published by Illustrated
Children’s Ministry. As they say on their
website, “Seasons like Advent and Lent
are great opportunities to say, ‘Hey – we’re
going to try something new for the next
few weeks.’” Particularly during Advent,
with our culture’s desire to get to
December 25 as soon after Halloween as
possible, it’s important to take time to stop,
wait, and to have conversations and
engage in intentional practices for the
season.
An Illustrated Advent for Families is one
way to do that—to slow down, ask
questions, have fun, be intentional about
how you spend your time, and try new
things. There are coloring pages for your
children, but we’ve often found that
parents enjoy coloring them as much (if
not more) than their children. There are
simple but meaningful devotions for
families to do throughout Advent, an
Advent Wreath activity, and our Advent
Calendar.
Another option for participating in an
Advent discipline is to subscribe to a daily
devotional from Rev. Katie Barrett Todd,
UKirk Executive Director and friend to
Starmount. You can participate in one of
two ways: text or email. If you would like to
receive daily texts, please text @adventkbt
to 81010. To receive daily emails, please
send an email to:
The Advent Devotional is available now in
the Narthex and Gathering Space. The
daily text/email devotional will begin on
the first day of Advent: December 3. If you
have any questions, please let Pastor
Kathryn know.
Starmount Utilizes Technology for
Advent and Weather Fall turns to winter as sure as we know, but
the weather can also turn at any time.
Starmount utilizes WFMY’s church closing
alerts, as well as posting information about
worship, meetings, and event cancellations
on our website and Facebook page.
However, Starmount is able to provide one
more way to be in touch with those who utilize
their phones for texting alerts: Remind.
The “Remind” application is one that is used
by many schools, teachers, and organizations
to get the word out about important events,
assignments, and notices. UKirk Greensboro
has been using it for a couple of years now;
Starmount Preschool began using it this
school year. Starmount Church will now offer
it for a couple of things: weather-related
alerts and daily Advent reminders.
If you’d like to “opt-in” to receive text messages
about weather-related alerts regarding the
church, please text @spcweather to 81010.
You will receive information about church
closings and meetings, events, worship
cancellations due to inclement weather. If
you’d like to receive a daily link to Starmount’s
Advent devotional, please text @adventkbt
to 81010. In either case, you will ONLY
receive text messages for whichever alerts
you would like to receive. Therefore, if you
would like to subscribe to both, you have to
text each list title (complete with the @) to
the number. We look forward to getting
creative with this service in the future,
including using it for specific groups and
other contemplative times of the year, like
the Lenten season.

Mission Committee
The Starmount Mission
Committee, as
representatives of
Starmount Church and the
community in which we
live, are proud to communicate the many
accomplishments over the last 12 months.
Our focus has been directed at improving
three areas within the community— Hunger,
Housing and Helping at-risk individuals.
Following are a few of the many
organizations which we support both
financially and with our human talents.
The Interactive Resource Center provides
basic health services to the homeless in our
community. The Mission Committee has
donated funds to help support the medical
clinic.
Reading Connections is a non-profit
agency whose mission is to help those who
want to improve their literacy skills. People
come to Reading Connections for a variety
of reasons. Our contributions help with the
training of volunteer tutors and supplying
materials for them to use with their students.
The Mission Committee changed the name
of "Refugee Resettlement" to "Emergency
Assistance/Refugee Resettlement" in the
past year to reflect our desire to help more
than refugees in their time of need. In
February, we helped re-settle Benjamin
and Mabelle Ndouba, refugees from the
Central African Republic. We have assisted
a family setting up a home after leaving
the YWCA Family Shelter. We have
supported a refugee family, after the loss
of a job due to medical absences, and
Missions has helped two families in the
community with items from the furnishings
room.
The SPC Community Garden with its crew of
church members willing to get their hands
dirty to feed the hungry has donated over
1300 lbs. of fresh, organic produce to Share
the Harvest in 2017.
Backpack Ministry is a partnership with
Lindley Park Baptist Church to send bags of
non-perishable food home on weekends
with children identified as at-risk for hunger
at Lindley Elementary School.
Triad Health Project works to advance the
well-being of people living with and
affected by HIV/AIDS, many of whom are
underserved and marginalized. They are
dedicated to fighting the spread of HIV in
the most impacted communities through
preventative health education. THP’s
Higher Ground day center is a unique
place of community for anyone impacted
by the HIV epidemic. Clients receive
therapeutic services at HG in a group
setting. Our church provides lunches here
once a month on the third Thursday. We
also provide Christmas gifts and stockings
for THP families. (See page 11 for “The
Angel Tree” project.)
Sanctuary House is an agency that offers
help to those with a major mental illness.
They offer a daily activity program, counseling,
and a supported employment program.
The Shepherd’s Center is an organization for
older adults. They offer many services.
Habitat for Humanity has built over 460
homes in Greensboro since they were
organized in 1987. Presbyterians have helped
build over 18 houses. Starmount has helped
build five Building on Faith houses (homes
built by Faith groups).
Mobile Meals is a long-lasting program of
Starmount in which our church delivers meals
to homebound senior adults once a month
on the first Tuesday.
These are just a few of the many missions in
which Starmount is engaged. All these
activities are the expressions of the love of
Christ shown to our community through our
church.

Honor Cards Available Now! This year Honor Cards for
three organizations that
Starmount supports
during the year will be
available for purchase in the Narthex after

Urban Ministry. All cards are $5 each. Habitat
will also have inserts you can use in your own

cards and inserts will be available on Sundays
through December 17. This is a great way to
support these organizations and do your holiday
shopping; and no parking problems.
Oh, My Aching Back! How often have you
heard this phrase or said it
yourself? Our lifestyle – lots
of sitting and not enough
regular exercise – creates
the perfect environment
to cause our backs to ache. Can yoga help?
The answer is a qualified “yes.” Coming to
yoga class once a week is not guaranteed to
“fix” your back if it has had years of neglect. But
yoga can help you strengthen the muscles that
support your back and make it less likely that you
will be saying, “Oh, my aching back.”
Back pain is often not caused by a weak
back but by weak abdominal muscles. When we
sit, our abdominal muscles relax and the back is
left without support. Making sure that your lower
back is supported when you sit is the first thing
you can do to protect it. Very few of our chairs
offer enough lumbar support, so you can roll a
towel or use a small pillow behind your lower
back to give your back a firm surface to press
against.
The second best way to protect your back is
to do what your mother always told you – pay
attention to your posture! Good posture balances
your body and relieves imbalances that pull on
your back. When you stand and when you sit,
your head should be balanced over your
shoulders and your shoulders over your hips.
Where does yoga come in? Iyengar
influenced yoga pays particular attention to
correct alignment as well as making you more
aware of how all the muscles, bones, ligaments,
etc. work together. Yoga invites your spine to
move in all eight directions to either keep or build
mobility in your spine. Standing work challenges
your muscles to get stronger. Stretching releases
tight spaces in your body. And yoga makes your
body feel strong and relaxed – both of which
make your back feel better. Just ask any of the
yoga students from Starmount classes! Look for
the yoga flyers at the visitor and reception desks
to see the schedule of classes. If you have
questions, please contact Jennifer Dowler at
[email protected] or catch Jennifer at
church. Or you can just show up at a class.
Namaste!
In Pat’s words… “I got into Habitat when a friend got a group of us to work one Saturday and just kept going. I was a ‘Daddy’s Girl’ and followed him as he did carpentry. He taught me how to use tools at an early age. I got involved with my church, because I enjoyed helping people.”
Pat Hall received the
Triad Chapter of the
Association for
Fundraising
Professionals’
2017 Volunteer of
the Year award.
Congratulations Pat!

The Not So-Wise Man written by Alan MacDonald ; illustrated by Andrew Rowland. “Reputed wise man Ashtar is so busy being self-inflated about his wisdom that signs of the impending Nativity slip right
under his nose. After all, he surmises, what king would be found in a poor stable in Bethlehem? MacDonald's tale has the upbeat tone of a comedy of errors, without ever becoming slapstick. 1999 Christmas Is Not Your Birthday, experience the joy of living and giving like Jesus by Mike Slaughter. “Slaughter provides some insight into what's wrong with Christmas in
America: it often has little to do with Jesus and a lot to do with us. He … forces us to take a hard look at the box in which we've tried to put God. Then he shows us, through Scripture what we should really be seeing when we look at Jesus. And it doesn't stop there; we get to look at what it means to be a follower of Jesus, the real reason for the celebration of His birth. Slaughter gives ideas on how to celebrate in a way that honors God by serving and loving others rather than merely satisfying our materialistic desires. We get to look at what Jesus came to do, and it wasn't just to give us a reason for a party. As Christians we have already been given the most incredible gift. In response we should be sharing that love, proclaiming the good news and living our lives in a way that pleases Jesus. The author tells us why and shows us how.” Review from Amazon.com Call no. 248.4 Sl 2011

Starmount Church Community Garden
Those smiling faces belong to the regular contingent of gardeners who have shown up Saturday mornings to till, plant, weed, harvest, laugh, and enjoy the outdoors during the growing season this year, our ninth. We have aimed for a three season garden: spring, summer and fall and we have grown 32 different varieties of vegetables, fruits and flowers. Our largest harvest was 221 lbs. of cucumbers. To date we have harvested and donated 1312.55 pounds of fresh, organic produce to Share the Harvest, a non-profit which distributes donated produce to agencies that either have a food pantry or prepare a meal for the hungry. The gardeners have also enjoyed the fruits of their labor taking a modest amount home to enjoy. Nothing like eating a fresh, juicy tomato that you have nurtured! We thank Bruce Bursey and Fred Campbell for their efforts in building a raised garden bed for the mobility challenged, a bench and a cabinet for the storage of our tools. Funds for these projects came from the Lillian Steele Grant we received. We will begin our tenth season of the community garden at the end of March 2018. Join us - all ages and skill levels are welcome to get dirty to feed those less fortunate than we.
