But when the lion grew up “the pair had to be separated,” the National Geographic said. “Visitors complained the sheep dog bullied the lion.” Dr. Mann has several mixed groups of monkeys, Breeds that normally shun their present playmates. The same sort of integration is working out fine in the bird house: Zebras have been known to mingle with horses. Sometimes they mate. Their offspring look pretty much like horses, but with striped stockings. Dr. Mann said that for several months he has had two different types of lizards living together. A lizard is not the easiest thing - to love, even for another lizard. But Lizard A wouldn’t eat, so Dr. Mann put Lizard B in with A because B is a good eater. “I thought one could persuade the other to eat,” the Zoo boss said. B seems an adequate teacher. At any rate, A is still alive. * Earlier this year, a Dutch air- line announced it has learned that when it is flying a cargo of elephant, the big beasts are soothed by the cackling of chicken companions.
