Cryptic Masonry Defined: The symbolic degrees of Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason as conferred in the United States are degrees of the York Rite. Therefore, every Master Mason raised has received the first degrees of that Rite. It is perfectly natural that having begun their Masonic work in that Rite, they should want to continue it.

CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER OF MASONIC

DEGREES

The Council Degrees are a requirement of the York Rite in many Jurisdictions. It is good to know the order in which they would be portrayed if presented in chronological order.

1 The portion of the Royal Arch ante-dating the building of the Temple (Chapter).2 The Entered Apprentice (Lodge).3 The Fellow Craft (Lodge).4 The Mark Master (Chapter).5 The Royal Master. First Section (Council).6 The Select Master (Council).7 The Master Mason (Lodge).8 The Royal Master. Second Section (Council).9 The Past Master (Chapter).10 The Most Excellent Master (Chapter).11 The Super-Excellent Master (Council).12 The Concluding Section of the Royal Arch (Chapter).13 The Red Cross (Commandery).14 The Order of Malta (Commandery).15 The Order of the Temple (Commandery).

(It is questionable whether the last two should be reversed. Even the Grand Encampment had the order reversed for many years).

From this arrangement, it can readily be seen that a Mason who has not taken the Council degrees and does not understand their teachings, cannot possibly have a thorough understanding of even the Symbolic Lodge, let alone the Chapter and Commandery.

Councils of Cryptic Masons form the center body of the York Rite of Freemasonry.

A Master Mason may join a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons and receive the four degrees of that organization. After which he may seek further knowledge in Freemasonry and join a Council of Cryptic Masons.

No rite of Freemasonry has come into its own so much as the series of degrees known as the Cryptic Rite, also known as the Cryptic Masons. Its popularity is well deserved for there are no more beautiful or meaningful degrees in all Freemasonry than those conferred in the Council of Cryptic Masons.

One reason for its popularity is that it completes a story, a Masonic allegory. Freemasonry is very philosophical and teaches its ideals by allegory or story. This philosophy is moralistic and religious; however, Freemasonry is not a religion, nor a substitute for one. A requirement for membership in Freemasonry is a professed belief in God and eternal life. It is mandatory that a man profess a personal faith in a Supreme Being prior to becoming a Freemason. Freemasonry never attempts to alter a brother’s beliefs. Freemasonry offers no theology or plan of salvation. However, it does offer a moral plan to use in this world. This leaves the Mason to look to his religion for salvation into the next world.

Ancient Cryptic Masonry centers on and about the story of the preservation, loss and recovery of the Word. The Word represents man’s search for life’s purpose and the nature of GOD. Symbolic

Freemasonry, as in the Lodge, teaches of the loss of the Word and hope for its recovery. Royal Arch Masonry, as in the Chapter, teaches its recovery. Cryptic Masonry, as in the Council, completes this story by teaching of the Word’s initial preservation.

ORIGIN OF THE DEGREES

As in many of the Masonic degrees, the origins of the degrees of Cryptic Masonry are shrouded in mystery. Yet, they have attained a substantial growth and one out of every two Royal Arch Masons is a Cryptic Mason.

Nearly two hundred years ago the degrees of Royal Master and Select Master appeared. Traveling Masonic lecturers throughout the East were conferring them upon Masons, while engaging in instructing in Craft (Lodge) and Capitular (Chapter) degrees. Even one Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite included the degree of Select Master as one of its “detached” degrees. Nevertheless, these beautiful degrees were not to remain detached for any length of time. The state of Connecticut bore the first Grand Council in 1819. In Virginia and West Virginia, the degrees developed in the Chapter of Royal Arch Masons where they remain. In the 1870, a General Grand Council was formed for the United States of America. Today, this Grand Council numbers most of the Gr and Councils in the United States, as well as the western section of Canada.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS JANuARY 15

AND HISTORICGROuP PHOTO

Lancaster Lodge No. 54 installed its officers in an open installation on Fri., Jan. 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the lodge. Over 120 guests attended both the ceremony and dinner. On behalf of Worshipful Master Patrick Barger and the 2010 Leadership Team, we extend our sincerest thanks to our Installing Officers: M.W.B. James Brown, Master; W.B. Don Jelinek, Chaplain; W.B. Keith Attebery, Secretary; W.B. David Jelinek, Marshal; and W.B. B. Lynn Alexander, Musician. Following the ceremony, a group photo of all members of 54 who attended was taken by the Picture Man. It was mentioned several times throughout the evening that there had not been this many members of Lancaster Lodge attend any event in decades. Now this one is officially in the history books.

The Lincoln Youth Symphony String Quartet under the direction of Dr. Clark Potter was on hand to provide inspiring and beautiful classical music for the guests as they dined amid an elegant setting. Lancaster Lodge is in the final stages of becoming a sponsor of the Lincoln Youth Symphony and further details of this exciting partnership will be announced very soon!

humbled by the trust and confidence the Brethren of Lancaster Lodge bestow through electing me to the East,” Barger said. “I am looking forward to guiding the lodge toward continued success in 2010.”

This event was a fabulous kickoff to what, no-doubt, will be a fabulous year for Lancaster Lodge No. 54! Congratulations to all!

WORSHIPFuL MASTERSHARES IDEAS FOR 2010

W.M. Patrick Barger is highly optimistic and enthused about the programs and activities he has planned for 2010 including charitable programs, a focus on innovative fellowship activities, and Masonic education. All three being important, he is particularly interested in expanding the core component of what makes us Masons: ritual. “54 has always placed a strong emphasis on Individual Proficiency in degree work. We will not ignore that expectation this year, I assure you.” These themes culminate in Barger’s title of his theme for 2010: “Forging the Future through Honoring the Past.”

Barger attributes a great deal of his optimism for the 2010 year to his line of lodge officers. “The Lancaster Lodge 2010 Leadership Team is a top-notch group of proven leaders made up of progressive men. I selected each appointee based not on what he has already done for Lancaster Lodge, but what I think he will do for Lancaster Lodge,” he said. “The Brethren of the lodge elected the rest of us under the same expectations.”

He emphasized, “The elected officers are extremely dedicated, progressive individuals devoted to Masonry’s ancient heritage. They will keep sight of ancient principles and adapt them to meet the needs of our newest Masons.” Barger added, “But none of us would accomplish anything if it weren’t for the continued support and encouragement from all of the Brethren of Lancaster Lodge.”

The rest of us are just as optimistic and enthused as our Worshipful Master and are looking forward to a very good year.

SIX INITIATED AS ENTERED APPRENTICE

MASONS

Graham House, Jake Bennett, Armin Jukovic, Garrett Ely, Eric Sullivan, and Nate Carlson were initiated as Entered Apprentice Masons by Junior Warden Tyler White. Our congratulations to them on their first step into the larger world of Masonry and

Lancaster Lodge. Congratulations are due as well as to our own newly installed Junior Warden for his first time in the barrel conferring a degree in keeping with the ritual proficiency expectations of officers in Lancaster Lodge! And a fine performance it was…

TWO BECOME FELLOW CRAFT MASONS

Buddy Smith and Tom Scott were passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft Mason on Jan. 1. W.B. Ron Wallick introduced them to the seven liberal arts and sciences among other significant Masonic principles.

SIX BECOMEMASTER MASONS

Shane Rhian, Larry Sharp, and Josh Mietz were raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason on Jan. 8. Likewise, Dick Young, Nick Roth, and Buddy Smith became familiar with the Five Points of Fellowship on Jan. 22. We wholeheartedly welcome these men as full-fledged members of Lancaster Lodge No. 54!

HISTORIC BIBLES RESTORED

To commemorate Worshipful Master Patrick Barger’s goal of “Forging the Future through Honoring the Past,” Senior Warden Mark Clinton joined with him in underwriting the cost of restoring three historically significant editions of the Holy Bible as their special gift to Lancaster Lodge. The Bibles were originally published in 1869, 1876, and 1895 and were originally presented to the lodge by various Brothers over the years. It is interesting to note the Ecclesiastes 12 was well worn on each of these Bibles. As many of you know, this is the Chapter the Bible is open to when a Master Mason swears his obligation. “There is no doubt in our minds that thousands of Lancaster Lodge Brethren swore their Master Mason obligation on these Bibles over the 136 years since the lodge was chartered,” said Worshipful Master Patrick Barger. “It is only fitting they be properly preserved for the archives.”

They were delivered to Pease Bindery in Lincoln where they were painstakingly restored in a process taking four months to complete. It was clear these oversized volumes were originally deluxe, ornate editions but had fallen into severe disrepair over time. “When I discovered these

Bibles in the archives of the lodge, they definitely showed 100 plus years of wear and tear,” Barger said. “Some people might even have considered throwing them away, they were in that bad a condition.” After Pease Bindery completed the monumental process, the Bibles once again exhibited their intended dignity and opulence befitting our rule and guide of faith.

Barger and Clinton presented these restored Bibles to the lodge during their 2010 Installation of Officers ceremony. In fact, the oldest of the Bibles was open upon the altar as the 2010 officers swore their obligations. M.W.B. James Brown accepted these historical volumes on behalf of Lancaster Lodge in his capacity as 2010 Chaplain. They are now stored in a secure, fireproof location laid up in the archives of the lodge as a memorial to all those who came before us.

MARSHAL JOSH MIETz ASSuMES DuTIES AS LODGE HISTORIAN

Josh Mietz, recently installed as Marshal, assumed his duties as Lodge Historian on Jan. 15. Mietz, a doctoral student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was appointed to the un-official post by Worshipful Master Patrick Barger for 2010. “The Bylaws of 54 do not provide for an official Historian, so Josh and I agreed that his expertise in the area of archival preservation should fall under the category of performing ‘such other duties as the Worshipful Master shall direct’ as officially featured in the Grand Lodge of Nebraska Ceremonies Manual in describing the Marshal’s position.” While sifting through numerous photographs and documents in the archives, Mietz said, “I have always enjoyed historical research and the preservation of documents critical to the legacy of an organization.” He went on to say, “With the rich history of Lancaster Lodge and the volumes of information laid up in the archives, I am looking forward to cataloging, preserving, and securing

these important records of 54’s Masonic endeavors.” No doubt the thousands of Brethren who served as Masons in Lancaster Lodge since 1874 join all of us in thanking Josh for sharing his unmatched archival skills with the lodge.

MASTER’S PLANS

Our newly installed Master Ken Koop outlined his plans for 2010: First, to improve our degree work. Second, to expand our Lodge functions and make them enjoyable and fun. Finally, to expand our membership by at least five and keep them involved. “None of these will I do alone, but with you and your help,” he said.

TREMENDOuS HISTORY

“Lincoln lodge 19 has a tremendous history,” Worshipful Master Koop said. “It is a very historic membership………..”

“This is a time of change for Lincoln Lodge 19 and the Fraternity as a whole. Dan Brown’s ‘The Lost Symbol,” a bestseller on the New York Times list, pushes us back out to the forefront…….If you walk through a bookstore, you will see many books about eh Masons. Here is one called “secrets of Freemasons.” Here is another and another. So we are out there. But are WE OUT THERE?

“NO, we aren’t. How so we reach more men and share what we have? This is our challenge today and tomorrow. For if not, we are dead…… This year I have a few ideas, but I will need more from you, and your help,” he said.

GEORGE WASHINGTON DINNER TuE., FEB. 16

Plan now to attend our first social event of the new year, our traditional George Washington Dinner, on Tue., Feb. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in our Temple dining room, 1635 L St. The cost is $8.00.

We’ll receive a clear understanding of the formidable challenges Washington faced as president and why he enjoyed his final years at Mt. Vernon.

NO FEAR

A few minutes before the church services started, the congregation was sitting in their pews and talking. Suddenly, Satan appeared at the front of the church. Everyone started screaming and running for the back entrance, trampling each other in a frantic effort to get away from evil incarnate. Soon the church was empty except for one elderly gentleman who sat calmly in his pew without moving, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God’s ultimate enemy was in his presence. So Satan walked up to the man and said, ‘Do you know who I am?’ The man replied, ‘Yep, sure do.’ ‘Aren’t you afraid of me?’ Satan asked. ‘Nope, sure ain’t.’ said the man. Don’t you realize I can kill you with one word?’ asked Satan. ‘Don’t doubt it for a minute,’ returned the old man, in an even tone. ‘Did you know that I can cause you profound, horrifying agony for all eternity?’ persisted Satan. ‘Yep,’ was the calm reply. ‘And you’re still not afraid?’ asked Satan. ‘Nope,’ said the old man. More than a little perturbed, Satan asked, ‘ Why aren’t you afraid of me?’ The man calmly replied, ‘Been married to your sister for 48 years...

It took her a few minutes of being speechless to answer him!!! That has to be a first for a Chapter. Our Chapter is thrilled and happy for them, as I know many of you are also.

There was even a photo of Bro. Herschel at a DeMolay meeting in Heidelberg, Germany.

BuSINESS MEETING

Bennett Lodge opened with all but the Senior Steward’s seat filled. I noticed W.M. Fred Liebers smile as he surveyed the lodge room from the East. It is good to see this happening. I know from where I was in West, it was pleasing and brought a good feeling to all in the lodge.

After W.M. Fred made the same statement he has been saying all year...”Never again. Twice around is enough.” If you see Fred give a hearty addaboy for a job well done in Bennett this year. To all the Worshipful Masters elect. Bennett wishes to congratulate you and hopes your lodges have a prosperous year.

THANK YOu’S

Bennett Lodge has depended on Bethel 60 to help with affairs, and quite often we would call them at the last minute. These young ladies have cheerfully showed up and performed whatever function

was required of them. Good job ladies and we at Bennett Lodge wish you to know that we appreciate everything you do for us. Another group of young people that has been most helpful over the course of years have been the sons and daughters of Bennett in assisting in our booth at the Nebraska Football Home games. All these young people are to be commended for all they do for Masonry. Thank you, with young people like you, I know our future will be well handled. At a date in the near future, we at Bennett have decided to give them a pizza party.

JANuARY MEETING

Yes, we had a January meeting even though the cold, snow, ice, and blowing winds were everywhere. No potluck, but the few men who were there cleared the sidewalks and then went inside for warmth and hot pizza; thanks to the brave men of 210. The meeting was brief but bills were read and allowed. We are pleased to report that Tim Dalrymple and John Stotts were elected to receive the degrees of Masonry, and petitions for reinstatement were read for Gerald Green and James Koehn.

INSTALLATION

On Monday evening, Jan. 18, W.B. Scott Dodge was installed as the Worshipful Master. W.B. Robert Pratt as Sr. Warden, Kevin Pratt as Jr. Warden, and Jeff Wunder as Secretary.

HE WILL BE MISSED

We were saddened to hear of the passing on Jan. 11 of

W.B. Stanley D. Cohen who was Worshipful Master in 1978. Memorial services were held Sat., Jan. 16. Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to his family.

A BIT OF HuMOR

The Rev. Billy Graham tells of a time early in his career when he arrived in a small town to preach a sermon Wanting to mail a letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, “If you’ll come to the Baptist church this evening, you can hear me telling everyone how to get to heaven.” I don’t think I’ll be there,” the boy said. “You don’t even know your way to the post office.”

AND A PHILOSOPHICAL THOuGHT

Past, Present, Future—The past is behind us, the present is upon us, and the future is yet to come. These are beautiful thoughts, if we will take time to contemplate their meaning.

INSTALLATION

Bethel 5 had to postpone their Installation of Officers due to bad weather on Jan. 9. The Installation was moved to Jan. 23. Installation details to follow in the next issue of The Masonic News.
