School gardens teach children responsibility, a caring for nature, and anunderstanding of agriculture, science, relationships, and life processes.

IxChel tropical Research Centre has launched a new program, The Growto Learn Garden, at the Santa Elena Primary School here in the CayoDistrict.

We’re starting this program with an 18 x 10 plot of land to grow herbs andvegetables. This “garden classroom”, will give students an understandingof how the local food system works and serves as a link to local farmers, and others involved in agriculture. Also growing herbs and vegetables inthe same plot will educate the children about plants that serve as medicineand food. The kids will be in charge of weeding, watering and overallprotecting the plants, of course with the supervision of their class teacherand IxChel’s project coordinator, Ms Salome Oliver.

We will grow lemon grass, oregano, barsley, calalu, aloe vera, rue, mint, tree of life and sorosi. Chives, cilantro, lettuce, cucumbers, chilis andlettuce will fill the vegetable boxes.

Ix Chel continues to find positive ways to encourage our kids to do theright thing in society.

VISION WHILE DRIVINGDURING A HEAVY

DOWNPOUR. We are not sure why it is soeffective; just try this method when itrains heavily. This method was givenme by a Police friend who hadexperienced and confirmed it. It isuseful....even driving at night. Onemethod used by Canadian MilitaryDrivers for years. Most of the motorists would turnon HIGH or FASTEST SPEED ofthe wipers during heavy downpour, yet the visibility in front of thewindshield is still bad. In the event you face such a situa-tion, just try your SUN GLASSES(any model will do), and miracle! All of a sudden, your visibility in frontof your windshield is perfectly clear,as if there is no rain. Make sure you always have a pairof SUN GLASSES in your car, as

you are not only helping yourself todrive safely with good vision, but alsomight save your friend's life by givinghim this idea.. Try it yourself and share it with yourfriends! Amazing, you still see thedrops on the windshield, but not thesheet of rain falling. You can see where the rain bouncesoff the road. It works to eliminatethe "blindness" from passing semi'sspraying you too. Or the "kick-up" if you are fol-lowing a semi or car in the rain. Theyought to teach that little tip in driver'straining. It really does work.NEVER DRIVE IN THE RAIN

WITH YOUR CRUISECONTROL ON

This next warning is a another goodone! I wonder how many peopleknow about this: A 36 year old female had anaccident several weeks ago andtotaled her car. It was raining, thoughnot excessively, when her carsuddenly began to hydro-plane andliterally flew through the air.. She was

not seriously injured but very stunnedat the sudden occurrence! When she explained to the PoliceOfficer what had happened he toldher something that every driver shouldknow - NEVER DRIVE IN THERAIN WITH YOUR CRUISECONTROL ON. She thought shewas being cautious by setting thecruise control and maintaining a safeconsistent speed in the rain. But theOfficer told her that if the cruisecontrol is on when your car begins tohydro-plane and your tires losecontact with the pavement, your carwill accelerate to a higher rate ofspeed making you take off like anairplane She told the OPP Officer thatwas exactly what had occurred. The Officer said this warning shouldbe listed, on the driver's seatSun-visor - NEVER USE THECRUISE CONTROL WHEN THEPAVEMENT IS WET OR ICY,along with the airbag warning. We tell our teenagers to set thecruise control and drive a safe speed- but we don't tell them to use thecruise control only when the pavementis dry. Some vehicles (like the ToyotaSienna Limited XLE) will not allowyou to set the cruise control whenthe windshield wipers are on. The onlyperson the accident victim found, who knew this (besides the officer),was a man who had a similaraccident, totaled his car andsustained severe injuries.

The Donkey In The Well One day a farmer's donkey felldown into a well. The animal criedpiteously for hours as the farmer triedto figure out what to do. Finally, he decided the animal wasold, and the well needed to becovered up anyway; it just wasn'tworth it to retrieve the donkey. He invited all his neighbors to comeover and help him. They all grabbeda shovel and began to shovel dirt intothe well. At first, the donkey realized whatwas happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone's amazement hequieted down. A few shovel loads later, the farmerfinally looked down the well. He wasastonished at what he saw. With each

shovel of dirt that hit his back, thedonkey was doing somethingamazing. He would shake it off andtake a step up. As the farmer's neighbors continuedto shovel dirt on top of the animal, hewould shake it off and take a stepup. Pretty soon, everyone wasamazed as the donkey stepped upover the edge of the well and happilytrotted off! Life is going to shovel dirt on you,all kinds of dirt. The trick to gettingout of the well is to shake it off andtake a step up. Each of our troublesis a steppingstone. We can get out ofthe deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and takea step up.

A cowboy rode into town andstopped at a saloon for a drink.Unfortunately, the locals always hada habit of picking on strangers, whichhe was. When he finished his drink,he found his horse had been stolen. He went back into the bar, handilyflipped his gun into the air, caught itabove his head without even lookingand fired a shot into the ceiling."Which one of you sidewindersstole my horse?!?!?" he yelled withsurprising forcefulness. No one answered. "Alright,I'm gonna have another beer, andif my horse ain't back outside by

Say Partnerthe time I finish, I'm gonna dowhat I dun in Texas! And I don'tlike to have to do what I dun inTexas!" Some of the locals shifted restlessly. The man, true to his word, hadanother beer, walked outside, and hishorse has been returned to the post.He saddled up and started to ride outof town. The bartender wandered out of thebar and asked, "Say partner, beforeyou go... what happened inTexas?" The cowboy turned back and said,"I had to walk home."

I Am A Father A little boy got on a bus, sat next toa man reading a book, and noticedhe had his collar on backwards. Thelittle boy asked why he wore hiscollar that way. The man, who was a priest, said,"I am a Father." The little boy replied, "My Daddydoesn't wear his collar like that." The priest looked up from his bookand said, "I am the Father ofmany." The boy said, "My Dad hasfour boys, four girls and twograndchildren and he doesn't wearhis collar that way." The priest, getting impatient, said"I am the Father of hundreds,"and went back to reading his book. The little boy sat quietly... but onleaving the bus, he leaned over andsaid, "Well, maybe you shouldwear your pants backwardsinstead of your collar."

Philippines: Typhoon Bopha Death Toll Rises The death toll from a powerfulstorm battering the southernPhilippines has risen to about 200, asrescue teams arrive in affected areas. At least 156 people are known tohave died in Compostela Valleyprovince alone when Typhoon Bophastruck eastern Mindanao, localofficials mentioned. Rescuers have reached most areas, but have had difficulty getting to someisolated communities. Many were evacuated ahead of thestorm, now over the western islandof Palawan. The typhoon is expected to moveout into the South China Sea onThursday. Compostela Valley province wassaid to be the hardest-hit area.Neighbouring Davao Oriental

province was also badly affected, withreports of about 50 people killed. In Andap village, in CompostelaValley, water and mud rushed downmountainous slopes to engulf aschool and a village hall serving as

evacuation centres. At least 43 people were killed there, with more reported missing andinjured - including soldiers sent to helpwith evacuations. "The waters came so suddenlyand unexpectedly, and the windswere so fierce - that compoundedthe loss of lives and livelihood,"Compostela Valley ProvincialGovernor Arturo Uy told Reutersnews agency. He said water catchment basins forfarms on top of the mountains hadgiven way because of the torrentialrains, sending down large volumes ofwater. He added that the cost of damageto agriculture and infrastructure inCompostela Valley province couldreach at least 4 billion pesos ($98m),with the typhoon destroying 70-80%of plantations - mostly bananas forexport. Julius Rebucas, whose mother

and brother were caught in flash floodsin Compostela Valley, said: "The lastthing my mother said was 'I loveyou'. It's sad because I no longerhave a family." Davao Oriental GovernorCorazon Malanyaon said roads todozens of towns were impassablebecause of fallen trees and collapsedbridges, and getting into them was like"running an obstacle course". She said initial reports indicated thatin one town, Cateel, 95% ofthe buildings had been damaged.Twenty-three people had drowned orwere buried under fallen trees orbuildings there, she said. Across the affected provinces, rescuers have also pulled out dozensof people from the mud, many ofwhom are now being treated inevacuation centres and hospitals. Most suffered facial wounds or limbinjuries. Dozens of domestic flights and ferryservices in the central and south of thecountry were suspended, and schoolsand businesses were closed while thestorm passed. Bopha comes a year after TyphoonWashi killed more than 1,300 peoplein the southern Philippines. The storm devastated the cities ofCagayan de Oro and Iligan on theisland's north coast. Many of those who died weresleeping as Typhoon Washi causedrivers to burst their banks, leading tolandslides. Entire villages werewashed away.
