DJ/EY seek early approval VIRGIN Blue is calling on theAustralian competition watchdogto grant ‘interim authorisation’for its tie-up with Etihad Airways(TD 26 Aug) by as early as next Fri,“to ensure the new V Australiaservices are able to successfullycommence” by Feb next year,Travel Daily can reveal. The request is part of a 39-pagesubmission that Virgin Blue andEtihad has presented to theAustralian Competition ConsumerCommission, to support the pact. The detailed document providesinformation on a number of otherimportant aspects of the DJ/EYalliance and also spells out VirginBlue’s aim “to challenge Qantas’supremacy” in terms of businessand int’l travel for Aussies. Virgin says it needs as muchtime as possible to begin sellingand marketing the Abu Dhabiroute, and is hopeful of tentativeapproval by next Fri 10 Sep,“given the urgency, and the factthat the alliance will not result inany detriment, but willimmediately create benefits.” The carriers say their alliance is“clearly pro-competitive” andthat Virgin Blue would not be ableto “viably” pull off flights to AbuDhabi in its own right, incompetition against Etihad. The airlines say they will
actually suffer detriment if theinterim authority is notforthcoming, as they need time todevelop a customer base anddistribution channels, and havetheir product featured in tourbrochures and holiday packages. Virgin says it requires at leastsix to nine months lead time “tobuild customer demand” for itsnew long-haul Abu Dhabi route, pointing out the failure of itsMelbourne-Johannesburg routewas due, in part, to notestablishing a brand presence innew markets beforehand. DJ admitted the recent renewalof the Qantas and South AfricanAirways codeshare (TD 19 Aug)meant “there was no chance ofbeing able to effectively compete”and as a result, abandoned itsonly “loss making” Africa route. It‘s not viable for V Australia tocompete on routes againstincumbent carriers with globalnetworks servicing the market, like Qantas, DJ said. Virgin has told the ACCC adecision to grant interimauthorisation “will not prejudgethe final authorisation”, saying itis not necessary for the watchdogto decide whether the Alliance“satisfies the authorisation test.” For a full report on the issuesraised by DJ/EY see pages 4 and 5.

Alliance duration THE Alliance between VirginBlue and Etihad Airways will befor “no earlier than five years”,consistent with the periodgranted for the Qantas/BritishAirways Joint Services Agreementand the V Australia/Delta Air Linesjoint venture. DJ and EY expect to reach anagreement on schedule and faresonce granted interm authorisation(as soon as 10 Sep), at which timethey’ll begin joint marketing andselling the new services. The reciprocal code share willbe initiated from 01 Oct. In the long-term, Virgin Blueand Etihad say there are potentialadditional synergies to be struck, including further productalignment, combined airportprocesses, staff travel reciprocityand joint sales & marketing. There’s also the potential ofbroader cooperation on aircraftmaintenance and ground handlingin five years.
Poly Blue/EY tie up THE Virgin Blue/Etihad AirwaysAlliance will extend beyond DJ’sdomestic, V Australia’s int’l andPacific Blue Tasman and Pacificoperations, to include a codeshare agreement between thePolynesian Blue subsidiary, sometime in the future.
EY SYD time change ETIHAD Airways is likely to re-time a portion of its existing 11weekly Sydney-Abu Dhabi servicesshould the DJ/EY Alliance gainapproval, Virgin says. The time slot change will “beattractive for passengers” andallows the carriers to “optimisebehind and beyond connections”to both airline’s networks, andmeans efficient utilisation of VAustralia’s Boeing 777 aircraft.
New VA destinations AS PART of Virgin Blue’s plannedpact with Etihad, the DJ networkof global destinations will increaseby over 20 cities through codeshare services, effective 01 Oct. New DJ destinations, servicedby Etihad, include Cairo, Doha,Athens, Manchester, Dublin,Munich, Chicago, Toronto, Beijing,Bangkok, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur,Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. The ‘reciprocal freesale codeshare’ agreement under bilateralrights will permit Virgin Blue tooffer passengers services includingfrom Sydney-Moscow, Gold Coast-Abu Dhabi, Uluru-London, Perth-Athens, Brisbane-Manchester,Cairns-Munich or Melbourne-Frankfurt, for example. Under the alliance, DJ can alsoimmediately sell interline serviceson all Etihad destinations.
Alliance to compete with Qantas THE proposed joint venturebetween Virgin Blue and EtihadAirways, combined with plannedalliances with Delta Air Lines andAir New Zealand, will mean Virgincan “genuinely compete withQantas’ international network”,the Australian carrier says. Virgin Blue believes the Alliancewith EY will enhance competitionin international aviation to andfrom Australia, and make DJ asecond Australian internationalnetwork carrier, a move likely to“stimulate a competitive responsefrom Qantas.” DJ says the links with EY, DL andNZ will “present a crediblenetwork offer” to lure corporateand government markets, in whichtenders are commonly negotiatedon a network-wide basis. The combined Alliance wouldgive Virgin Blue access to an int’lnetwork of over 300 destinations. DJ’s objective to increase itsnetwork will enable it to bettercompete for a higher share of thecorporate market, which will seeVirgin Blue “challenge Qantas’supremacy in terms of int’l andcorporate travel for Australiansand promoting furthercompetitive response fromQantas.” Virgin says its JV with Etihadwill enhance domesticcompetition between itself and
Etihad dissatisfiedwith Qantas pact ETIHAD Airways believes VirginBlue will be “a better strategicpartner going forward”, comparedto its previous code shareagreement with Qantas. In its submission, the Alliancesays there was a significant overlapbetween Qantas and Etihad, andthat the UAE carrier “has notbeen satisfied” with QF’s level ofsupport and investment in theirpartnership.

the Qantas-Jetstar Group, “as itwill give Virgin Blue theopportunity to better matchQantas’ network, feeder trafficand distribution strength.” Virgin has said there are noother airlines which have acomparable network of domesticand international services as QF,and as such other airlines cannotfulfil a significant portion of acompany’s travel needs. It also highlighted that Qantas’method of contracting andbundling services for corportatetravellers, “allows it to leveragetheir domestic and internationalnetwork in such a way that othercarriers find it difficult tocompete.” DJ says Australian consumerswill benefit from the improvedcompetition, which will increaseconsumer choice and stimulateadditional competition in bothdomestic and int’l passenger airservices markets.

JNB/HKT losses VIRGIN Blue says “urgency” onan interim authorisation for itsAlliance with Etihad Airways (pageone) is also necessary so it canavoid loosing more money on itsother “loss making” Africa andThailand routes. DJ says it needs an OK on itsAbu Dhabi service immediately“so that it can recoup lost salesfrom ceasing to offer these otherservices.” Virgin said in its submission tothe competition watchdog that itsBoeing 777 aircraft is not suitedto the Phuket market, which is an“outbound leisure” sector.
Metal neutrality VIRGIN Blue and Etihad say theyneed to jointly set schedules andfares “in order to achieve metalneutrality”. DJ said there’s no other possiblescenario under which it would beable to commence viable servicesto Europe via any other mid-point.

DJ/EY pact to stimulate tourism
QR still keen on SYD QATAR Airways is still hopeful oflaunching direct Doha-Sydneyservices this year, according tothe joint Virgin Blue/EtihadAirways submission to the ACCClodged this week. Virgin says as part of QR’sgrowing presence in Australia, theairline is planning to launch dailynon-stop flights to Sydney using aBoeing 777-200LR in 2010. The allegation is made despiteQatar Airways remaining tight-lipped about its entry into theNSW capital any time soon, withSydney appearing to have fallenoff QR’s radar for the immediatefuture, as flagged earlier this yearby Travel Daily.

VA/DL decision? VIRGIN Blue’s desire to have theACCC grant ‘interim authorisation’for its Alliance with Etihad by 10Sep (page one) could be an earlysign that Virgin is expecting agreen light from US authorities onits tie-up with Delta Air Lines. It’s been expected for monthsthat the V Australia/Delta jointventure would gain approval inthe month of Sep.
JQ’s reaction THE mooted Etihad-V Australiaflights to Singapore (page one)would see a second low costAustralian carrier operating to theAsian hub, alongside Jetstar, which plans its own long-haulSingapore services from 16 Dec. Jetstar spokesman SimonWestaway, told TD yesterday thecarrier’s “strategic decision toconsolidate its Asian hub inSingapore is paying real dividendsfor our Pan Asian Strategy.” Singapore currently supportsover 20 direct Jetstar flightmarkets, expanding its hub by 46%in the past financial year, and willsupport future daily MEL-SIN A330services later this year in its nextphase of growth, Westaway said.
AUS vital to Etihad ETIHAD Airways will look to usethe proposed Alliance with VirginBlue to improve its brandpresence and services in and outof Australia, a destination thataccounts for over 10% of EY’savailable seat kilometres. EY says it considers Australia tobe of “great strategic importance”because of its location, andbelieves the Alliance will enhanceits position here for the corporatesector, and will enable it to targetdomestic Australian destinationsthat are not serviced by Etihad. The carrier also says the pactwill offer a more competitiveproduct in order to compete moreeffectively with rivals, Emiratesand Qantas.
THE Australian tourism industryas well as potential and existingVirgin Blue and Etihad Airwayspassengers will directly benefitfrom the proposed Alliance, thecarriers say in their submission tothe ACCC. The airlines claim that theAlliance will stimulate tourism toAustralia, particularly to citiesbeyond the main internationalgateways of Sydney, Brisbane andMelbourne. They say that V Australia’s newSydney-Abu Dhabi service, to debutin Feb next year, will provideAustralian travellers with morechoices flying to the UAE andonwards to Europe, the Middle
East, South Asia and Africa, andvice versa. It will also provide passengerswith access to improved onlineconnections and a broaderschedule or air services, be it onVirgin Blue or Etihad aircraft. “Increased passenger numberson these services will have adirect benefit for tourism toAustralia,” the submission says. The Alliance will give Etihad thechance to promote its combinedVirgin Blue services to newdestinations, which “werepreviously unavailable without theinconvenience and costsassociated with switchingairlines.” “The combination of the creationof a new service and intensivemarketing of the destination canactually generate tourism from asource population to a particulardestination”, which would benefitregional economies arounddestinations served under theAlliance, Virgin Blue says.

What is the highlight of your career?Happened last Sunday. Won DancingWith The Stars. What is your favourite holiday spot andwhy?Oh geez tough. For a proper holiday theCook Islands. It’s as far away fromanything that anything can be and whenyou’re there you’re really on holidays. What is one thing you cannot leavehome without? My blood sugar machine, my insulin, everything. My little bum bag with all mydiabetes stuff. What is the most common thing youleave home without?Oh gee, um, I don’t know. I don’t reallyleave home without anything. Oh - myphone charger!Do you have an embarrassing travelstory you can share with us?I was in Las Vegas with four mates, we’dbeen out. We’d had a big night. We’d gothome very late, packed the car in a rushand I left my bum bag with all mydiabetes medicine on the bumper bar ofthe car and then we drove off on ourway to LA. An hour and a half into the
trip I started looking through all ourstuff and the boys realized that I’dforgotten something and without sayinga word the driver’s turned around andlooked at me. I nodded, he nodded. Hestopped, turned around and we drovean hour and a half back to Vegaslooking for something we didn’t evenknow was going to be there.
