Research Planning/Exploration
About FacebookFounded in February 2004Develop technology that helps their users
communicate more efficiently with friends and family
Issues Does the major of a college student influence
the amount of time he/she spends on Facebook?
Does Facebook have an effect on amount of time spent studying?
Research Planning/Exploration
Past ResearchOne study found that students who use
Facebook while studying get grades that are 20 percent lower than those who do not.
The meaning of the word “friend” is changing
Another study found that the average student spends 3 hours per day either on their account, or someone else’s account.
Research Planning/Exploration
Research QuestionsWhat is the average time spent on Facebook
by a college student per day?Do female students spend more time on
Facebook than male students?Does the major of a college student influence
the amount of time spend on Facebook? Is there a relationship between time spent on
Facebook and time spent studying? Why do students use Facebook?
Hypothesis
Regardless of major or course load, college students spend similar amounts of time on Facebook or other social networks.
Data Collection and Preparation
Steps used:Target audienceSampling planSummary of respondentsMethod of survey administration
Target Audience
College students Various majors Various Universities Reason: to see how different majors and
how much time they spend on Facebook affects their GPA
Sampling Plan Devise the proper questions to ask our
target audience that would answer our hypothesis questions
Step 1, Came up with a lot of questions initially
Step 2, filter through the questions and get rid of the questions that would not help
Step 3, make a survey with the questions we thought were most beneficial to the hypothesis questions
Sampling Plan (cont)
Step 4, distribute the survey to our target audience
Step 5, wait for the responses Step 6, analyze and summarize the
responses
Summary of Respondents 79 surveys were completed 93.7% of the surveys we sent out were
filled out completely; high success rate Some numbers to highlight:
There were about 12 different kinds of majors that completed the survey
51.9% of the subjects are currently taking 13 – 16 credits this semester
Summary of Respondents (cont)
Numbers (cont)41.8% study 1 – 2 hours per day36.7% spend 1 – 2 hours per day on
Facebook56.4% strongly agree that they use
Facebook to check their news feedIn the written response, which was “list your
top 3 reasons for using Facebook”, a common answer was “creepin”
Method of Survey Administration Used surveymonkey.com to create the
questions electronically Used Facebook to distribute the survey
to the target audience Surveymonkey.com helped us collect all
the data We put our findings in an excel
spreadsheet to conduct the hypothesis tests

per day than Science Majors.Business Students do not study as much
per day as Science Majors. What is interfering with Business
