COVID-19 Symptoms?
COLUMBIA TOWNSHIP RESIDENTS As residents of Columbia Township were complying with Michigan Governor Whitmer’s COVID-19 pandemic ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ executive order, concerned about their continued employment and the possibility of local food shortages, Columbia Township Board members ( Supervisor Linda Norton, Clerk Christy Case, Treasurer Rhonda Collins ) were busy lin-ing their pockets with obsessive wage increases! Their wage increases and the wage increases they approved for the Township Deputy Clerk and Deputy Treasurer were outrageous and an abuse of the public trust placed in these elected Township officials! The Board has taken extreme advantage of the hard-working taxpayers of Columbia Township to line their own pockets with your hard-earned tax dollars. Equally inexcusable, instead of following the Governor’s ‘Stay Home, Stay Safe’ executive order, the Board violated the executive order by hiring a contractor to modify the entrance to the Township hall to restrict public access to the office area. Our tax money paid for the Township hall and we are being restricted from access. They are acting like dictators! Board members can no longer be trusted! _________________ Kenneth Speicher Grand Junction [email protected]

Dear Bangor Viking Families:On April 2nd, Governor Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-35, which ordered all K-12 school buildings closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year for in person instruction for pupils in grades K-12. The order also ensures Continuity of Learning setting guidelines for “Remote Learning”. The Administration and Staff of Bangor Public Schools have been working on the Learning Plan, which was

OK Google, let’s LEARN…In order to offer our Bangor Middle and High School students access to their materials and individual help from teachers, we will be using Google Classroom. Many of our teachers and students are already familiar with this software and were already using it earlier this year in the classroom.
Google Classroom is a free and secure learning network for teachers, students and schools. It provides a safe way for us to connect, share content, access homework, participate in discussions and receive class information.
Using Google Classroom allows you and your child to have access to course work at any time through the Internet and is accessible online and through any mobile devices with Internet capabilities—including iPhone, iPad and Android devices. Additionally, the use of Classroom will help keep students and parents informed of due dates, assignments and grades. Classroom is also useful to check on work missed when absent and toaskquestionsaboutassignments.
Google Classroom is used as an educational tool will be used strictly for educational purposes.
Guidelines for using Google Classroom are as follows:
• Studentswillberequiredtouseappropriategrammar instead of texting language.
• The site will be used to discuss school-related content only.
The teachers have created accounts that have been assigned to your students’ classes. You will be able to see copies of all resources.
Thank you so much for being a part of our implementation of technology into our curriculum. Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. We look forward torenewing our connections with the students (who we ALL miss a LOT!) and giving them the opportunitytofinishtheyearstrong!
So NOW What?!...We wanted to make a list of fun alternatives to “couch surfing”whilewe are staying hometogether. Here are some of the ideas that topped our list (in no particular order);
1. Make a fort – messes are temporary; mem-ories are forever (at my house it may be the other way around)
2. Set up a treasure hunt – Doesn’t have to be actual Pirate booty; just “treasures” from around your house.
3. Bake together – One of my favorites, chal-lenge yourself by dusting off a cookbook or creating your own recipe (as long you are will-ingtoeatitfirst).
4. Have an indoor picnic – use a blanket and setup whatever you can to make it feel like you are outside (you could even play outdoor sounds on a phone or make your own)
5. Listen to Josh Gad’s story readings on Twit-ter – Olaf has his own Twitter account where he reads childrens’ stories
6. Make a space for learning – decorate a sec-tion of the house to get you ‘feeling all aca-demic” and what not…
7. Play cards – you would be surprised at what games the other members of your family may be able to teach you.
8. Play charades – this is great for building vo-cabulary and for bringing out those acting
skills. You could also draw clues.9. Set up outdoor gym class create an obstacle
course or a variety of exercises that need to be completed and time yourself and others.
10. Make your own board game – Not feelingANOTHER game ofmonopoly?Make yourown board and rules; maybe you will create the next great… um, game.
11. Create pasta jewelry – if you have any rotini, ziti, macaroni or other pasta with holes laying around, you can use your imagination to cre-ate lots of items; even besides jewelry.
12. Make a vision board – draw pictures or clip them from magazines that represent what you want for your life. Make sure to display it somewhere you will see it often to motivate you.
13. Do an at-home dance class – Make sure to give everyone the opportunity to “teach” at least once (some of us are obviously more qualifiedthanothers).
14. Write a Journal –Thisisaprettysignificanttimeinhistorywithalotof“firsts”.Somedayother kids will want to know what it was like; tell them all about it now in your own words.
15. Check out the Cincinnati Zoo or the Geor-gia Aquarium Beluga whales Live webcam Online
Stay Healthy!During this time of concern for our Bangor families’ health and safety, we wanted to share out detailed information from our Health Center.
The Health Center will be open limited hours during school closure. We do not have COVID-19 tests (see below for more information). We will be checking our messages on a regular basis so please do not hesitate to contact us at 427-6810. If you have urgent mental health concerns, please call 1-800-922-1418 or text HAND to 741741.
Information about Covid-19 (Coronavirus)Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has developed a COVID-19 website located at michigan.gov/coronavirus. It is updated regularly with the most current available information. MDHHS hotline for COVID-19: 888-535-6136.
Recommendations for Individuals and Families at Home1. Learn about the signs and symptoms of
COVID-19. Symptoms include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing.
2. If you have respiratory symptoms, STAY HOME WHEN YOU ARE SICK. Call your health care provider’s office in advance of your visit.
3. Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, like doorknobs, keyboards, cell phones, and light switches.
4. Communicate and reinforce best practices for washing hands and covering coughs and sneezes.
5. Be prepared if there is COVID-19 in your household or a disruption of daily activities in your community. For example, maintain a supply of medications, food, and other essentials in your house.
6. Access services as much as possible online or by phone.
Packet Pickup
Work packets will be ready for pick up on Tuesday, May 5th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the main entrance of the building. We want to remind everyone of “safe distancing” during pick up time. Only one parent can enter the building. Please do not bring any children as they will not be allowed in.
1. Keep routines in place: The experts all agree that setting and sticking to a regular schedule is key, even when you’re all at home all day. Kids should get up, eat and go to bed at their normal times. Consistency and structure are calming during times of stress. Kids, especially younger ones or those who are anxious, benefitfromknowingwhat’sgoingtohappenandwhen.
2. Be creative about new activities and exercise: Incorporate new activities into your routine, like doing a puzzle or having family game time in the evening. Build in activities that help everyone get some exercise (without contact with other kids or things) Take a daily family walk or bike ride or do yoga- get your child outside and ollow them to burn off energy!
3. Manage your own anxiety: It’s completely understandable to be anxious right now (how could we not be?) but how we manage that anxiety has a big impact on our kids. Keeping your worries in check will help your whole family navigate this uncertain situation as easily as possible.
4. Keep it Positive: Though adults are feeling apprehensive, to most children the words “School’s closed” are cause for celebration. Let kids know that you’re glad they’re excited, but make sure they understand that though it may feel like vacations they’ve had in the past, things will be different this time. For example, Dr. Busman suggests, “It’s so cool to have everyone home together. We’re going to have good time! Remember, though, we’ll still be doing work and sticking to a regular schedule.”

"Students, if you need technical support for your Chromebook or mobile hotspot, complete our online technical support form. The form can be found on our district website under the "Closure and Remote Learning" link, "Technical Support" button. Or, students may also call 269-427-6800 extension 1205 between 2-8 pm."
Students Anxious to LearnDespite closure for the remainder of the school year, many Bangor Career Academy students have continued to work in their virtual classes. Because instruction for our students has always been online using the Kickstand learning platform, Career Academy students have had continued access to their coursework. While our primary concern at this time is for the wellbeing of our students, we are excited to see so many of them seeking the stability that learning provides during these challenging times. Keep up the great work students!
New Processes Developed to Support Remote LearningThe shift to full-time remote learning has created an opportunity for the Bangor Career Academy staff to add some new processes to support our students and help them to be successful while working at home. One new support feature is remote tutoring. Previously, tutoring was done in-person at school or through email communication. Studentscannowcompleteatutoringrequestformtohaveavideochattutoringsessionlive with their teacher through Google Hangouts Meet. This technology allows the teacher and the student to share their computer screen as needed to work out practice problems and clarify misunderstandings. Career Academy students are now able to take unit tests and exams remotely while being monitored by a test proctor to ensure testingintegrity.Similartothetutoringrequestprocess,studentssimplysubmitatestproctoringrequestformonlinetogettheirassessmentscheduled.Duringthetestingsession, the student shares their computer screen for their testing proctor to view their test attempt. Testing sessions and tutoring sessions are recorded to protect staff and student safety. Please note that parental permission is provided through responses in the Distance Learning Survey that was conducted by the district in mid-April. Parents andstudentswhohaveanyquestionsorconcernsabouttheprocess, shouldcontacttheschool director, Mrs. Reilly, at [email protected].
We Care About Our Students!Career Academy staff were excited to reach out to their students and families last week! Forsomestudents, itwasthefirsttimethey’dtalkedtostaffsincetheschoolclosurewasinitiated.Thefirstpriorityforstaffistomakesurethatourstudentsaresafeandthatthey have what they need such as food, emotional support and the technology needed to successfully complete schoolwork. Phone calls were attempted for every student during the week of April 13-17. These wellness contacts will continue weekly for Career Academy students. If you have recently had a phone number change which prevented staff from contacting you, please reach out to your student’s mentor as soon as possible or email Mrs. Reilly at [email protected].

Bangor Township, as well as Hartford, Lawrence and Arlington Township are rural farming communities, a perfect place for the Amish to settle. Many of you may have noticed the horse and buggy signs on some of our country roads. The horse and buggy is the main transportation for the Amish. Buggies are required by state law to have a “slow moving vehicle” placard on the backs of the vehicles. Many buggies are equipped with red LED flashing lights on the back and amber lights on the front.
