ALMOST HERE If you plan to participate in TASCA’s ‘42’ tournament this month and just haven’t gotten
around to turning in your entry form and fee, now is the time to do so. The tournament will

BALLROOM DANCE NEWS The Roaring 20s Ballroom dance was great fun
last month. Have a look at the pictures on pages two and three to see what we mean!
And then, get ready for the next ballroom dance
which will be on September 4! Though we were unable to schedule the dance on the 11th, the Red,
White & Blue theme for the evening honors the memory of who and what was lost to us on that
fateful day 14 years ago. Come dressed in the colors of our flag and plan to
have a super time. Music for the evening will be provided by Steven Smitha, and as always, a back
drop will be available for picture-taking.
Admission is $20 for TASCA members, $25 for guests. Please call the TASCA office—(903) 871-
3217—and RSVP by September 1. Whole tables can be reserved for parties of 8 or more. Doors open at
6:30 and the dance is from 7:00-10:00. Snacks will be available all evening.
"The best way to garden is to put on a
wide-brimmed straw hat and some old
clothes. And with a hoe in one hand
and a cold drink in the other, tell
somebody else where to dig."

NEW EXHIBITION OPENS AT
TYLER MUSEUM OF ART The Tyler Museum of Art (TMA) invites all to view a new exhibition of painting and photography called Reflections of East Texas. The exhibit—which opened on July 26 and will continue until September 27—features the works of five artists who are either East Texas natives or who live in the area. Exhibition organizers say that artists “Keith Carter, Ted Ellis, Diane Frossard, Mike Perry and Franklin Demetrius Willis all have been profoundly influenced by their experiences in the area and continue to evoke those memories in their work.” Remember that all exhibits can be viewed free on the first Friday of each month. The mu-seum opens Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. TMA is supported by its Members, Tyler Junior College and the City of Tyler. The museum is located on the TJC cam-pus at 1300 S. Mahon. For more information, call (903) 595- 1001.
REMINDERS TASCA Potluck Dinners are on the second
Tuesday of each month at 4:30 PM. Always good food, good friends and a special speaker!
Lone Star Singles dinners out will resume this month. Meet new people and enjoy a meal
at Daniel Boone’s on Thursday September 17 at 5:45. For more information, call Wanda Barber
at (903) 566-4211.
Dance Lessons. Due to other commitments
on both the first and the third Saturday of September, our wonderful dance instructor
Hugh Wallace will be unable to teach the 5:30-6:30 C & W dance lessons.
But the good news is that Tuesday evening
ballroom dance lessons will continue at their usual time this month.
The cost of the ballroom lessons are $5 per person. For more information or to let us know
you’d like to take the lessons, call the TASCA
office at (903) 871-3217.
AN INVITATION TO DISCUSS
THE SERENITY PRAYER As many of you may know, Joyful Beginnings Church has regular Sunday services
here at TASCA. They have asked that we
extend an invitation to all who have a special place in their hearts for the Serenity Prayer.
Discussion of the prayer will take place on Sunday September 20 from 9:15 until 10:15
AM during the church’s regularly-scheduled
Adult Sunday School Hour here at TASCA.
MEDICARE SEMINARS COMING
TO TASCA During the months of October, November and December, UnitedHealthcare Medicare and
Retirement representatives will make presentations here at TASCA. The seminars will
cover general Medicare information and specific
UnitedHealthcare product information. Mark your calendars for October 15,
November 12 or for December 3 from 10 until 11:30 AM. Refreshments will be served at the
meetings, and everyone is welcome to attend. After each seminar, the UnitedHealthcare

IN THEIR OWN WORDS Everyone has countless tales to tell about their
life experiences, little slice-of-life events that we share with others. Some of us keep journals or
write our own short stories. This column is some-
thing new and experimental for the TASCA Tally. We want to give our members opportunities to
share their stories—fictional or true—with others, so this column is an invitation and an outlet for
writers here at TASCA. Got a story you want to
tell? Write it up and send it to us by mail, email or drop it by the office, and we’ll share it for you.
Two such slice-of-life stories follow. Enjoy! “The doorbell rang and as I was making my
way to the door, I looked through the glass and I could see the handsome new student from my
school. My heart started beating so fast I thought
I might faint. I saw my Mother step upon the porch and introduce herself to the young man. I
heard him tell her about himself, and that he had come to ask her permission to take me out
sometime. My Mother laughed, and gave her
permission but told the young man it might be better for him to get my permission also! They
shook hands and he left. I had to sit down and I began to wonder how long before he would call.”
Betty Moore
“One year the weather was so dry, the grass sparse and the trees dry. A fire broke out on the
other side of the mountain and was moving fast toward us. I had cut my hand to the bone and
the doctor advised me not to use it. My son and I were alone and he was only six years old. We
called the cows to the fenced-in lot and stalls by
the house and I gave him a burlap sack soaked in water. I had a big bucket of water and a rake
that I fit into the crook of my elbow. I raked as the fire came down the gully and my son
dragged the wet sack after to cover any I
missed. We kept it away from the barn, the milking lot and the house until the fire depart-
ment finally arrived and was able to keep the fire away from my neighbor’s house.” Inez Williams
