President’s Report

Hi all,

Well once again we had a very successful show with a good number of beautiful Birmans’ entered. I

saw many smiling faces and cage tops laden with great prizes ranging from delicious fudge, yummy

chocolates, cat tunnels, heaps of cat biscuits and a lot more that this tired mind just can't remember

off hand.

Many thanks to all who donated prizes and the tireless committee that worked so hard to keep our

show up to the standard that our members are used to.

This year we tried something different and combined with Taranaki and although it seemed to work

well, we found that we were a bit rushed at the end due to our committee helping out with both

shows, so next year we will be back to having our own specialised show. Once again this will be in

July.

Good luck for the breeding season and I look forward to seeing more beautiful babies on the bench.

I know of some breeders who will be having (hopefully) their first litter of kittens, they will be

nervous as I was with my first but you have plenty of support out there ladies so don't be scared to

use it. Good luck and we want photos.

Judges Report – Maree Roy

TOP TEN ENTIRE CATS: BIS: #138 [Moonson Princess Grace] – Blue Tabbypoint. A lovely girl with attitude! I ignored the conversation because of her excellent balance and nice Birman head type. Difficult to achieve the colour contrasts with this colour – but it was evident here.

R/Up: #125 [Candypaws Broadway Diva] – Sealpt. My best Seal from twelve; not easy! Once again, lovely alance and a very good tail. Her head was still to broaden but still looked good.

3rd: #141 [SILVGRCH Sceiron Tori]. This girl was over seven years old; a Blue Tortie Tabbypoint. Her eye colour had faded somewhat and her coat a wee bit woolly. But the look was very ‘correct’ and with a good tail she balanced well. Very placid and sweet-natured so I’m sure she is a great mum.

4th: #132 [CH Sandylands Katie] – one of the four Bluepoints today. A young lady at 15months so lacked tail furnishings and the boning was a bit sparse too. Pleasing gloves and gauntlets; once again, lovely balance and beautifully presented.

5th: #116 – the first Seal on the bench and just nine months. [Concerto Pinball Wizard]. Perhaps a bit well-conditioned but he had the bone development to carry it. His head and especially his chin need time to broaden. He was nicely groomed to set off his correct silky coat.

Page 5: STCC September 2014

6th today was #133 [DBGRCH Moonson All About Grace]. She was the R/Up Blue girl. Good balance though with a ‘summer’ tail. Her main feature was her excellent head type.

7th I gave to GOLDCH Leegrgo Blue Boy in Cage #130 – a close runner to #133. At over eight, he’s been around for a while and had lots of male condition. I was pleased with his coat and tail length to balance his big body. Lovely placid nature which is so important for a stud.

8th: #122 [Belzicatz Sinhfully Sweet] – a Sealpoint lass just nine months old. Her coat was a bit patchy, and her head shape somewhat babyish yet. Best bits: a very good chin and colour contrasts with great gloves and gauntlets.

9th: #137 [CH Birpur Cute As] – a two year old Seal Tabby female. She had good balance but marred by a slightly small head which gave her close-set eyes. A lovely coat and good gloves and gauntlets set off the tabby points. Often the tabbies have too much coat shading and thus the colour contrasts are spoiled – but not in this case.

10th today - #121 [GOLDCH Leegrgo Fire Stone]. A mature Seal chap coming up six. He was my R/Up male in this colour. “All boy” but with a great personality. His coat let him down a bit in texture and grooming; however he had very good balance, gloves and gauntlets, a correct head and a great chin.

BAM awarded to breeder of exhibit 141 – for her great balance and ‘correctness’. A classic Birman with the personality ideal for a breeding queen.

TOP TEN ENTIRE KITTENS: BIS: #214 [Adorabella Code Blue] – Bluepoint boy at 5months. Very slightly long in the body today but overall very good balance. He was a gorgeous colour and the contrasts with his great gloves and gauntlets set him off.

R/Up: #213 [Moonson Florentine] – she was the best of five Sealpts. At eight months, she had an advantage, and well-balanced already. Her beautiful coat was set off by excellent grooming.

3rd: #217 [Starpaws Starstruck]. – a Lilacpoint; not many of them around yet. She was well conditioned for eight months and developing good bone. A lovely feel. Her colour a tad disappointing – slightly cold and with a brownish hue.

4th: #215 [Belzicats Coco Bliss] She was the better of the two Choccie girls. Once again, good balance. A lovely coat and presentation, with contrasts coming in well.

5th: #220 – another girl; Blue Tabbypoint and just four months.. [Leegrgo On Cloud Nine]. Very nicely presented and growing well. What a super temperament – I think she is enjoying this show business! 6th today was #202 [Leegrgo Louis The Fourteen]. A five months Seal chappie. A delightful package, full of mischief and friendly as. His other main feature was his lovely colour contrasts. A wee bit out of balance today … but he’s only a baby.

7th [Sceiron Katara] in cage #222. SBI F/E at five months, also slightly out of proportion. She showed very good development in bone and substance. An attractive lass, with potential. Good placid temperament too.

8th: #218 [Birpur Miss Pixie Bee] – a Seal Tabbypoint six months today. Well balanced – that extra month seems to help. Special mention – lovely points with the tabby very evident. Great eye colour as well. I would have ranked her higher but her coat showing too much shading especially at such a young age.

9th was #216 [Florencia Miss Coco Chanel] ; an eight month Chocolatepoint lass. Best features – a lovely coat and very good gloves and gauntlets. Tabby markings on her head will hopefully fade. Slightly too straight in the profile.

10th #211 [Adorabella Wet Candy Kisses]. Quite well grown at eight months. Balance all correct. She had a lovely Birman profile but head a little narrow which marred her eyeshape and set: hopefully will mature with age.

BAM #209 – as much for personality as anything! Hopefully he’ll make a great dad!!

Page 6: STCC September 2014

N/S CATS and KITTENS: BIS: #315 [DBGRPR Birpur Iza Stunning Choccie] – actually a Chocolate Tabbypoint. This chap was the last in today’s lineup – but a great show fella and enjoying himself. Very well built and balanced. His head needed extra breadth to help eye and earset, and his tail with a bit of brindling but he’s a winner.

R/Up: #307 [BRZPR Moonson Paddington Bear] – a 2 ½ year old Seal Neuter. Also a lovely boy with with great balance, contrasts and eye colour.

3rd: #314 [GRPR Moonson Rupert Bear]. – a Blue Tabbypoint not yet two years old. His tabby pattern rather diffuse, but lovely bone and a strong head. Pale eye colour – but often the way with blues. I liked his temperament.

#312 was 4th. [Sandylands I’m Just A Diva]. The first girl in the ranking and just a teenager at nine months. Very pretty Lilacpoint with not much to fault her. The colour contrasts developing well and with very good gloves and gauntlets.

5th: #309– another girl; [Candypaws Belle Of The Ball]. A two year old Sealpoint and R/Up Seal to #307. Well conditioned! Nice warm tones and good eyecolour with a well-groomed coat.

6th: #311 – another Lilacpoint, a boy this time. [DBGRPR Belzicats Velvet Zephyr] – nearly five, so mature. His balance was good though he needed more substance to his tail. His colour and contrasts were well developed though the Lilac colour was somewhat sandy.

7th #313 [DBGRCH/DBGRPR Birpur Melting Moments] – a mature Tabby lady at 7 ½; well used to shows! Main talking point – very good contrasts and pleasing to see she still had a pale coat. Pretty tabby markings on her points too.

Next 8th - #310. Bluepoints I’m partial to. This chap [SILVGRPR Sandylands Charley] was coming up five. He was a bit ‘vocal’ but I could still admire his lovely head type. Another skinny tail, but the length and balance OK.

9th BIS #308 – a 6 ½ year old Seal Neuter boy and bringing up the rear today. [GLDPR Yadillah Royal Rascal]. He was a solid lad, perhaps a little too heavy to show himself to advantage, and slightly out of balance. His placid personality was a bonus.

Three N/S Kittens – all Bluepoints and a tough choice from lovely babies in a row.

BIS #407, finally. [Florencia Miss Sapphire]. R/Up to her [Birpur Iza Blues Fan] and then the boy in Cage 405 [Moonson Lord Michael] third.

The BAM – very happy to award to breeder of #406. Six months old but a very good head for such a youngster and already showing lovely coat contrasts. Well done, Janice and Johnny! I had to resist the temptation to pop this wee doll in my handbag.

I would like to convey my sincere thanks to the Club for giving me the honour of judging all those lovely cats and kittens. The quality was generally very high and altogether I was provided with a great weekend.

Why Cats Rule and Dogs Drool! (excerpt from Stuff.co.nz, Ben Blackwell 31/7/14)

We've asked our readers if cats are better than dogs, or vice versa. Where does your fur loyalty lie?

Cats or dogs is a strange kind of rivalry, considering they are vastly different pets to have.

We always grew up with a couple cats in the house and adored them. It's safe to say the

family would experience a period of mourning if any of them died.

My parents firmly believed that it was important for children to grow up with pets, whether

it be a cat or dog.

But what really sets my firm belief that cats are the superior pet is my recent experience

having a dog. I agreed to look after my friend's dog for a few weeks while she was in

Thailand. I thought this would be good practice as I was planning on buying a dog in the not-

too-distant future. As endearing as the dog was she was a lot of work. It was like having a

toddler to look after. They are very dependent pets.

I enjoyed taking her for a walk each evening in the Melbourne summer but it took a lot of

time out of my day. She needed regular cleaning and brushing; she smelled and would piddle

everywhere.

The worst - and maybe it's because I've grown up with cats - was the smelly, sloppy licks. I

just can't bear it.

I really have to admit my friend couldn't have come back sooner. I was kind of glad to see

the back of the dog after some very long weeks. It was a good experience to have her

because it saved me a lot of time and money as I changed my mind on getting a dog and I

opted for a kitten instead.

The differences could not have been starker. On the first day we had the kitten she

elegantly tip-toed over to her litter tray to do her business and buried it appropriately.

Just a few weeks old and she was already showing better toilet training then the 2-year-old

dog and even a lot of adults I've come across.

Page 9: STCC September 2014

The idea that cats are boring compared to dogs is really not true. While I felt the dog we

had constantly needed attention and would look at you with sad eyes until you played with it,

that really becomes quite dull.

I've had hours of enjoyment watching the cat race around the house, attacking and pouncing

on even just a littlest piece of dust on the floor as if she was a lion in Africa pouncing on

her prey.
