About the CoverBy Daniel Greeson

Denver couple Nicole Moyle and Zach Harmon knew they wanted their wedding

photos to be exceptional. The result was even better than they, or wedding photographers Andy and Emily Barnhart, could have expected. In the breathtaking image that is the cover of the 2016 Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide, the couple shares a romantic moment together at the top of the gondola. Nicole clutches a bouquet of pink and red flowers, and her veil swells up behind her in the wind as dark clouds loom dramatically in the distance. “The vintage look of her wedding dress and veil, and the clouds, wind and light we got at the top of the gondola made the perfect combination,” says Andy. “Nicole and Zach were very at ease in front of the camera and giving them direction was easy.” Among the most striking elements of the picture is Nicole’s timelessly elegant wedding dress which Nicole’s mother wore it at her own wedding. “I knew I wanted a dress that was flowy, a little bohemian, long-sleeved and had a low back,” Nicole says. “And it only needed a few modifications. The dress originally had a high neck, so we removed the neck, added a sheer panel on the front and a deep ‘V’ in the back. We reused her veil as well. We created a cap that gathered at the back of my head and added lace details on the edge of the tulle. The dress and veil turned out perfectly! It was so special to wear my mom’s dress and also add a little bit of my own style.” Andy and Emily Barnhart knew they had captured an enchanting, while unanticipated, moment when they photographed Nicole and Zach at the top of the gondola. “I was not expecting the dark clouds,” Andy says. “My plan was to shoot towards the northwest with Sleeping Giant in the background, but once we got outside, I saw the dark clouds to the south that looked so dramatic and had them stand there. Nicole was the perfect bride for the dramatic look. The wind was blowing, which can be hard for a bride, but Nicole’s hair was down and she was game for getting good photos.” The Barnharts began photographing weddings together in 2010, and shoot almost all of their weddings as a team. “With our two daughters at home, it’s our date night,” Andy says. As a result of darkroom classes that he took in Denver and a film photography workshop that he attended in Mexico, Andy fell in love with the “soft, romantic process of film” and strives to capture its timeless quality in each of his wedding pictures. “Looking through the lens and knowing that we’ve captured moments that make us tear up, smile, or laugh out loud is a constant reminder that love is precious and that family and friends are priceless,” Andy says. Embracing with dramatic clouds in the distance, Nicole and Zach got a lot more than a wonderful wedding picture. They found a token of their love to last them a lifetime. l

Heidi Keenan & Ryan Scheid

“Magical” is the word Heidi Keenan uses to describe her wedding to Ryan Scheid at

the Orton Ranch, just south of Steamboat Springs on U.S. 40. Heidi, who was born and raised in Steamboat, had zero doubt that she would be married in her hometown. But the question was, where? She turned to family friend Bill Hamel of Steamboat Meat & Seafood Company for advice.

“We knew we should go to him first,” she recalls. “He’s like a second dad to me.” Bill suggested the Priest Creek Chapel at the Orton Ranch, which was especially appropriate because Heidi’s family has been longtime friends with ranch owners Lambert and Robyn Orton. “The ranch is rich with history,” Heidi says. Antique tractors, an old ambulance (Lambert is a physician), Steamboat memorabilia and a carriage house contribute to the ambience.

Wedding stories

Page 20: Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2016

18 | Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide 2016

“It was gorgeous,” Heidi recalls. Spring was exceptionally wet last year in Steamboat, which resulted in electric green trees, laden with chlorophyll in the early summer foliage. Although the venue feels remote, it’s actually only a few minutes from Steamboat’s mountain community, where many of the couple’s 250 guests were staying. The fun began with a rehearsal dinner at Ghost Ranch Saloon, a private venue in downtown Steamboat that can accommodate up to 400 people. Its 1893 Brunswick bar added a classic Western feel that set the tone for the weekend. The wedding itself took place at the Priest Creek Chapel. Both of Heidi’s parents walked her down the aisle, accompanied by “Just Once in My Life,” by the Beach Boys.

The bride wore a strapless, tiered lace gown that made people wonder if it was from 1905 or 2015. She carried white flowers – primarily peonies, her favorite – with pops of pink. The reception was held in a nearby party tent. Wedding planner Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day Productions suggested draping the ceiling of the tent. “It added an ethereal, magical feeling,” Heidi says. Dinner featured a plated salad, followed by a buffet that included Rocky Mountain trout and beef tenderloin. The combination of buffet and table service, which Bill suggested, kept dinner moving smoothly.

Only one day short of summer solstice, daylight lingered almost until 10 p.m., with the prolonged sunset adding a warm glow as guests danced to DJ Jerry Sorenson. Even though the sun eventually set on their wedding day, the magical experience continued when the couple honeymooned in the Dominican Republic.

Jennifer Whitney & Connor Walsh

A mystical mountain wedding: that’s how bride Jennifer Whitney describes her wedding to Connor

Walsh near the top of the Steamboat Ski Area. Colorado wildflowers, deep green aspen trees and panoramic vistas of Storm Peak formed the backdrop for the outdoor ceremony on the deck of Four Points Lodge. The wedding took place on the exact spot where Connor had proposed to Jennifer the previous winter during a ski trip. “We were up for the holidays. Jen didn’t expect it at all,” Connor recalls. Even a subtle hint that she might want to fix her hat hair didn’t spoil the surprise.

Connor, who was born and raised in Steamboat Springs, had one request: that the wedding be in his hometown, where his parents still live. At least half of the couple’s 110 guests live in Steamboat; many of the others were from the Front Range, where Connor and Jennifer live now. The family made a week of the event, tubing on the Yampa River, hiking on Buffalo Pass, savoring a rehearsal dinner at Catamount Ranch and Club, and gathering for a post-wedding Sunday brunch prepared by Connor’s mom. The midsummer wedding date had a special significance for Jennifer and Connor, who are Broncos fans. John Elway’s number was 7, and Peyton Manning’s is 18: hence July 18.

The couple also shares affection for craft beers, which translated into labeling the dinner tables at Four Points with the names of their favorite microbreweries. The ski area setting enhanced the wedding experience. Among the memorable moments was the rehearsal at Four Points. The venue is accessed via gondola and shuttle, which meant that immediate family and close friends had a quiet respite from the fast-paced wedding week.

For some of their pre-wedding photos, the couple continued past Four Points to the summit of Storm Peak, where they stood in the midst of wildflowers. Aspen branches and greenery formed an arch over bride and groom’s heads during the ceremony. Rain started falling as the guests moved indoors, where the building had been transformed from a ski lodge to a formal dining room. After coming up the gondola the previous spring to sample

their entrée options, the couple chose peppercorn beef, glazed salmon and royal chicken. Following dinner, everyone migrated to the dance floor, which was set up near the fireplace. The ski area’s newest wedding venue, Four Points Lodge proved to be the ideal spot for Jennifer and Connor to begin their life together.

Wedding stories

For life’s special moments to be complete, Beth Largey Sexton’s family must be there.

Even when Mike Sexton asked Beth to marry him, her family was nearby. Almost exactly one year prior to their wedding, Mike proposed while family and friends waited to celebrate at a New York City restaurant. “He knows I’m so close to my family,” Beth says. One of five sisters, she grew up skiing in Steamboat Springs, where

her parents made their part-time home. Beth and Mike decided to be married in Steamboat, not only because they knew family and friends would enjoy visiting the Yampa Valley, but also because they consider Steamboat a second home. Two of her sisters still live here and her parents are here often. Many of the couple’s out-of-town guests arrived in Steamboat on the Wednesday prior to the wedding. Her sister hosted a pre-wedding barbecue for

100 people on Thursday. Following dinner, a group headed out for a cruiser/pub tour of Old Town. Friday night, 60 people gathered at Hazie’s, atop the gondola, for the rehearsal dinner. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the valley at sunset, the setting was memorable, as was working with the ski area’s special event planner, Lindsey Yochem. “She was super accommodating,” Beth exclaims. Guests gathered Friday night at Bear River Bar & Grill in Gondola Square for drinks and dessert, and guitarist/singer Todd Musselman played for the welcome party, which Lindsey also arranged. For the ceremony itself, Beth chose Holy Name Catholic Church, which she attended with her family as a child. When she returned to Steamboat prior to the wedding, she was stunned by the impressive building that replaced the older church she remembered. The timing seemed perfect; the new Holy Name opened a few months prior to Beth and Mike’s wedding.

Following what the bride describes as “a very traditional Catholic ceremony,” the reception was held at Catamount Ranch and Club, south of Steamboat. Beth and Mike chose a duet entrée of beef tenderloin and halibut. After dinner, Denver’s Diamond Orchestra got the crowd on its feet. “They were really, really great,” Beth says. “Everyone danced all night.” The wedding was “everything we dreamed of,” Beth says, attributing its success to wedding planner Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day Productions. “Lindsey made it a thousand times easier. She was able to take my vision and make it happen – and more.” “It was definitely a dream wedding,” Beth says, proving that in Steamboat, dreams come true.

Three flower girls attend the bride.

www.naturalightimages.netFun, romantic and a touch outdoorsy. That

was Dr. Heather Gregory’s vision for her wedding to Dr. Matthew Brougham.

A rainbow, roses, twinkling lights and a tipi: Heather and Matt’s wedding had it all. Even the weather cooperated. A day of cloudy skies culminated in a quick thunderclap, just after a moment of silence in memory of the bride’s late father. Then, as the ceremony got under way, the sun came out and a rainbow appeared. “If we could have orchestrated it ourselves, that’s what we’d have planned,” Heather says. The couple met at Western University in California and dated eight years before they were married. In the interim, they finished medical school and completed residencies in Chicago, Illinois and Buffalo, New York, more than 500 miles apart. Once settled in the Denver area, where Heather is a family practitioner and Matt is an emergency room physician, they went to Boulder one night for dinner. As they walked past a jewelry store, Heather suggested – not for the first time, she notes – that perhaps they’d like to drop in to look at engagement rings. “Why do we need a jewelry store?” Matt asked. With an inward groan, Heather turned to face him just as he held out a ring for her. “I’ve already picked out a ring.” That was eight months before they were married. Because Matt’s brother Mike lives in Steamboat, Heather and Matt were familiar with the area. “We’d always talked about getting married in Steamboat. It was a perfect fit for us,” Heather says.

Many of the 140 guests came from Indiana, Florida and Georgia. In Steamboat, they’d have plenty to do, from horseback riding to tubing on the Yampa River. The couple met with wedding planner Lora Reichley of Last Call Floral + Events, who told them about a new local venue, Flying Diamond Ranch Weddings and Events, just 15 minutes from the Steamboat Ski Area. “It was outdoorsy, romantic and easy,” Heather says. She was looking to maximize fun and minimize stress, and the ranch allowed for both. Heather and Matt custom-tailored the ceremony. The brides’ mother and brother walked her down the aisle.

Matt’s close friend officiated, and he and Heather signed their marriage license during the service. It was important to Heather that the wedding dinner wasn’t “cookie-cutter” fare. Caterer Lawrence Jaconetta of Local Flavor suggested a sit-down, family-style meal that featured roasted seasonal vegetables and pork. Once the DJ took the stage, the dance floor quickly filled up, and before they knew what happened, Heather and Matt’s wedding day was drawing to a close. “It goes by so quickly,” Heather says. “People tell you that, but you don’t think it will be that way for you.” Her advice to brides: savor every minute.

A tipi served as a staging area.

Friday is spa day for the bridal party

Wedding Week Itinerary

Sunday/Monday: The bride and close family/maid-of-honor arrive in Steamboat Springs. They visit with their wedding planner, relax by the pool and enjoy a quiet prelude to the flurry of wedding activities.

Wednesday: The groom and his men arrive, and guests begin arriving, too. Everyone gets settled, and the bride and groom get their marriage license.

Thursday: The wedding party may choose to do a group activity such as fishing, mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding or golfing. The bridal party may go shopping and exploring downtown. Night brings a casual “meet and greet,” a gathering of family and friends for appetizers, cocktails or desserts.

Destination weddings can be a weeklong party. While each one is unique, the sequence of events may share some commonalities. Here’s one way a wedding week can go.

Saturday: Bridal party

gets hair and makeup done.

Friday: Guests may attend a meet-and-greet with music by a local band like the Yamp Valley Boys.

Friday nights, guests may attend the rodeo.

Friday: Spa day for the bridal party, as more guests arrive. The wedding party rehearses for the ceremony. Afterwards, the party can go one of two ways: a large rehearsal dinner that includes everybody with music and catering that requires a large venue; or an intimate dinner for the wedding party, with a welcome party later that evening that encompasses guests too. Those guests who aren’t a part of the rehearsal may choose to go to the Friday night rodeo, on a cruiser tour of Old Town or to a concert.

Saturday: The guys are free in the morning, while the bridal party gets hair and makeup done. Taking at least some photos before the ceremony helps to keep the activities on pace.

The ceremony begins late in the afternoon, followed by the reception and a late-night party.

Sunday: Farewell brunch. l
