Elizabeth Carnegie, Principal

Here is one of the beautiful prayers from

the GSE community last weekend:

As sons and daughters who

listen and long for life O God

we pray for the desire to

engage in holy dialogue

the faith to believe in you

beyond all systems and

institutions

the wisdom to celebrate and

honour the presence of each

other

the courage to speak out

the strength to persevere

so that your face on earth

may be seen in all its beauty

so that women and men

become whole

so that the world and the

Church may be transformed

into the fullness of Christ

who fills all things

now and forever.

AMEN

Dear Stella Community, Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the triennial Good Samaritan Education (GSE) Conference at St Scholastica’s College, Glebe, with several staff, board members and members of GSE. The theme was ‘Holy Conversation’ and Stella Maris was strongly represented in the dialogue with alumna Krystal Barter (a preventative cancer treatment activist) talking about her work with women through her organization – Pink Hope. This week @ Stella This week we had our first Taste of High Day for our incoming Year 7 (2017) students. Thank you to Catherine McKew for her great management of the girls and to the staff who make the day a memorable one for the girls.

HSC Changes for 2020As some parents may be aware the Board of Studies, Teaching & Educational Standards, NSW (BOSTES), announced last week that “The NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) will undergo wide reaching reform to support all students achieving a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy, to reduce excessive student stress, to remove opportunities for plagiarism and pre - prepared responses, and to motivate and challenge students to achieve at their highest possible levels”.

The first cohort to be affected by these changes will be our current Year 8 students who will graduate in 2020. So what are the changes and what are the ramifications for the College?

1. Minimum Standard for Numeracy and Literacy. All Year 12 students must reach a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive the HSC from 2020. The standard is set at the Australian Core Skills Framework(ACSF) Level 3, a nationally agreed standard of functional literacy and numeracy. Any student who wishes to receive the HSC from 2020 will be required to meet the minimum standard.

Students have until the end of Year 12 (or actually until 5 years after leaving school) to meet this standard. It can be achieved in one of 2 ways;

(a) a Band 8 in each of their Year 9 NAPLAN reading, writing and numeracy tests; or

(b) a Pass in the online literacy and numeracy test in Years 10, 11 or 12.

Those students who do not reach the standard in Year 9 will have sufficient time with their teachers, parents and schools to work on strategies and measures to improve their performance. It is fair to provide students with multiple opportunities to reach the standard. Students mature at different stages, and may master essential literacy and numeracy concepts at different times.

2. New Syllabuses. BOSTES will release draft new syllabuses for public consultation in English, Maths, Science and History for Years 11 and 12. The draft syllabuses focus on students developing mastery of skills and understanding, rather than a broad overview of content.

3. Assessment. School-based assessment will be capped at four tasks per course, including the HSC trial exam, to reduce excessive student stress from over-assessment and allow a greater focus on teaching and learning. HSC exam questions will be redesigned to reduce the opportunity for formulaic responses and cheating. Stricter guidelines will be issued to assure the authorship of take-home assessments and projects. BOSTES will cap school-based assessment to:

• a maximum of three assessments per course in Year 11

• a maximum of four assessments per course in Year 12, including the HSC trial exam.

The final HSC exams held in October and November each year will continue. These exams form 50% of a student’s final HSC mark.

Parents can be assured that the College was well aware of these changes and has been preparing for them for some time. Appropriate policies and practices are being developed to ensure that the College meets the standards for the new HSC and that all students are catered for within these new parameters. Stella Maris always has and will continue to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed and graduate achieving the best possible outcomes.

We will work with both the students and parents currently in Years 7 and 8 as we move towards the new HSC in 2020.

Information from the Catholic Education Commission about the CensusPlease find attached a link to a flyer and also a Facebook post that have been produced by the Diocese of Wollongong in the lead up to the National Census to be held on Tuesday, 9 August 2016. These provide you with reasons as to why it is important for individuals to identify with their religious belief, to the question on religion in the census. They have been designed for use by any faith tradition.

This year's census will have 'no religion' as the first option for the question related to religious affiliation. The document attached provides reasons for those who regularly attend organised religious worship, or who simply believe but attend irregularly, to think carefully about how they respond to the question, as non-engagement with the question potentially has broader impact than might be first considered.

Share the PDF via: http://dow.sh/CensusReligionYes

Flood Facebook: share FB post: http://dow.sh/CensusStandUp

Schools have been asked to include a link to this advice in their school newsletter. Some faith groups will be sending it electronically to worshippers in their faith traditions, to those connected with schools or other services provided by faith groups, so as to encourage a broad range of people to engage with the question appropriately, given that it is not compulsory and that ‘no religion’ is the first choice for this question about religious affiliation.

Pastoral Care

Last week, a large group of students from Year 11 attended the leadership training day to begin the formation process of our College Captains and Prefects for 2017. Our aim at Stella Maris College is to develop leaders who are collaborative, self-motivated and resilient. We aim to form leaders who are motivated by the Benedictine values and are willing to serve others for the benefit of the whole community - at Stella and beyond our gates.

We started off our day in the Chapel listening to Ms Carnegie, Ms Carter and Hayley Jago (College Captain, 2016) who spoke honestly about their past leadership experience and what it means for them to be a leader in a Good Samaritan College. We then continued to listen to inspirational speeches from Stella teachers and also guest speakers from organisations such as Caritas, and Sr Meg, a Good Samaritan Sister. Eva Sweekhorst (Year 11)

Today was a great experience that opened my eyes to becoming a leader of Stella Maris. I was initially a bit intimidated by the idea of a whole day dedicated to understanding the qualities of a great leader. However, Ms Collins & Mrs Silburn organised such a great day that was inviting and so helpful. After many insightful workshops and guest speakers, the experience helped me realise that I want to be a leader and help our Stella community as well as our 'Good Sam' Community. Stephanie Cramer (Year 11)

Students left the day feeling empowered about making a positive impact at the College when the current leadership team passes on the responsibility at the end of the term.

A Visit to Mater Dei CamdenOn Friday, 29 July, Kylie Andrew and I took three Year 9 students to Mater Dei to celebrate their Feast Day. Mater Dei is based in Camden and was established as a special school in 1957. Mater Dei is an organization that provides early intervention therapy services and education for babies, children and young people with an intellectual disability or developmental delay. The underpinning philosophy for all that we do at Mater Dei is “Inclusion for all”. Much of their work is focused on providing opportunities and experiences that will help their students develop the skills and confidence to be fully included as members of their community.

We had a wonderful day with the students. Our Year 9 girls were so caring and helpful and gained a great deal from our time together. Here are some of their words about the day.

Nicole Boyde, Head of Year 9

When we arrived at Mater Dei it was obvious that it was going to be a great day from the start, with the warm welcome that we received on our arrival. I felt so welcome and happy to be in such a loving and caring environment. I was really excited to experience a day in one of our sister schools that teaches disabled students. After their school Mass, we helped children celebrate their special feast day. Lots of activities were organized and we were involved in giving out popcorn and helping the children to dress up in all sorts of exciting costumes. This was made even more special as students got to take a photo in an Instagram frame. They took so much joy from little activities we take for granted. Overall, I am so thankful for going to Mater Dei and learning to be thankful for everything we have. Jasmine Stein Yr9

Mater Dei College is a college for those with an intellectual disability or development delay. Their philosophy for all is, “inclusion for all”.It was a privilege to travel out to Camden to meet the children at Mater Dei College. It was an extremely enlightening experience that I will remember for a long time to come.

Upon arrival, I instantly noticed the beautiful countryside and well - groomed school grounds. We then met with other schools and attended a Mass. The Mater Dei students were impeccably well behaved and patient throughout the service and sang beautiful gospels of hope and charity. After the Mass, we were assigned to a popcorn and 'Instagram' station, at which we handed out packets of popcorn to the children, helped them dress up and took photos. We had an opportunity to meet them all. We finished the day off with a disco in their school hall at which the kids danced away to the latest music.

This day helped me learn of the strength and independence of these children, as well patience and manners. It’s extremely reassuring to know these students are in caring hands and a safe environment with a quality education.

CurriculumJAPANESE NEWSJapanese school visit and cultural day Nanzan Girls High School from Nagoya visited Stella Maris College from 27 July to 3 August. Years 8, 9 and 10 Stella Maris Japanese students spent recess, lunch and Period 5 with Nanzan students everyday during their stay. We had a Japanese cultural day on the last day and it was a huge success. We had five activities: Origami, Shodo (calligraphy), wearing Kimono, Ayatori (cat's cradle) and Kendama (cup and ball). Both Nanzan students and Stella students had a great time and we are looking forward to having them again next year.

SPORT NEWSSoccer Last year Stella Maris won the under 15 girls BBSSSA soccer which gave the school the chance to represent Broken Bay against other winning Diocese schools. Last week Stella 7-9 soccer team travelled to Adamstown to play the Newcastle/Maitland Diocese winner which was St Pius College.

The girls played incredibly well, scoring early and taking the lead, but within moments this was equalised by St Pius. This happened again but then the Stella girls warmed up and went on a scoring frenzy winning 7-3. It was a great team effort.

The team will now move to the next round of the NSW CCC knockout and play the winner of Archdiocese (Southern).

Team Members: Braede Cox (Captain) Kirra Bullman, Charlie Gilbert, Annabelle Gilbert, Sophie Wickham, Heidi Schmatloch, Sophie Tetley, Zoe Pearson, Daisy Young, Charlotte Mola, Charlotte Beatham, Hayley Hopkins, Nellie Scarboletti, April Griffiths, Ella McIndoe.

Basketball The new basketball season commenced this week and there were a number of changes to the draws and playing days. All girls should now have the correct draw in their emails. If in doubt you can find the draw on the Manly basketball website below- then go to competitions on the left hand side and click ‘juniors’.

http://www.manlybasketball.com.au

A reminder that training is on unless it is raining and all players are expected to attend.

At the end of last term we had three teams make it through to the grand finals of the Manly competition.

Years 7/8 Division 1: Riley Valentine, Millie Prior, Brooke Smith, Jade Taylor, Emily Smith, Taylor Silverthorne, Kayla Kimball and Beth Moran. These girls played incredibly well and the score was tight all game but in the end Oxford Falls won despite a fantastic match from our girls.

Year 7 Division 2: Sophia Thomas, Juliette Nankervis, Abbey Andresson, Annabel Gallacher, Amelia Ford, Tiarna Moss, Lily Greneger. This team was on the top of the ladder all season and played a very hard final. The managed to show its dominance in the end taking out the win by 2 points.

Year 9 Division 1: Sydney Kania, April Griffiths, Caitlin Yeates, Skye Cselko, Audrey Tan, Molly Dignan, Bridget Smith.

These girls unfortunately lost the grand final to a St Lukes team they beat in the last round. As the match was played in Stella school holidays the team were down a player as 2 were overseas. The girls played incredibly well and had fun.

Stella DancersThe Stella Dancers have continued their winning streak with some outstanding performances and results over the past two weekends.

On 24 July the dancers competed in the Dance Spec Challenge at St Ignatius College and received fantastic results:

2nd – Company Lyrical 2nd – Company Jazz 3rd – Years 7-10 Jazz Ensemble

This weekend just past the girls competed in our hardest competition of the year – The Sydney Eisteddfod. Schools came from all over Australia as well as New Zealand. It was a very tough competition with 45 entrants in each category.

The Stella girls danced the best I have seen them dance and placed above all other schools on the Northern Beaches including Brigidine College, Oxford Falls Grammar and Mackellar Girls High. It was an outstanding achievement especially considering we only have one hour per week to rehearse each routine. The winning schools have their own Dance school as part of their schooling and students are required to attend classes most afternoons and all day Saturday so we have done extremely well considering our rehearsal times. Congratulations girls!

3rd Place – Company Jazz Highly Commended – Company Lyrical
