Hy verwelkom ook ons gas Herma Horn. Verskoning word aangeteken vir Kallie Buys, André Oosthuizen, Willem Lubbe, Emil Bührmann en Ds Scheepers. Lid Peter Jolie word gelukgewense met sy verjaardag op 29 Jun, wat hy in Nederland sal vier, dus maak hy iik sommer verskoning vir die volende byeenkoms. Pns neem met spyt kennis dat Willem Lubbe in die hospitaal opgeneem is en in ICU versorg word. Lede word gevra om vir hom te bid. In sy verwelkoming bedank die Voorsitter die lede vir hulle gereelde deelname aan die programme van ons klub, wat ons byeenkomste ʼn groot plesier maak, en wat vir almal ook baie leersaam is. Dat die byeenkomste gewild is word ook deur die bywoning onderskryf, waar meer as 15 lede gereeld bywoon.

Hierna word klubsake bespreek. a. Lid Henk Geertsema word geluk gewens met sy deelname aan die bekendstelling van die nuwe

vlinderseëls by Butterfly World, waar hy ook sy uitstalling van vlinders vertoon het. Vir die doel moes hy ʼn addisionele raam maak, wat hy aan die klub skenk. Die voorsitter bedank hom namens die klub.

b. Lid Emil Bührmann word geluk gewens met sy sukses by die Australiese Internasionale uitstalling, waar sy uitstalling van die reghoek Kaapse seëls ʼn Groot Goud verwerf het. Die Grand Prix is ook aan hom toegeken.

c. LS rapporteer dat die reëlings vir die bekendstelling van die Kirstenbosch seël op 1 Jul 2013 nie die vereiste resultaat opgelewer het nie, en dat dit gestaak is.

d. Die inskrywing vir GAUTHEME is deur die Sekretaris behartig, die gelde betaal en die vervoer van Gunter Wossler se uitstalling per hand is gereël.

e. Daar word baie steun ondervind van die lede vir die Klub se eerste veiling op 2 Julie, en tot dusver is reeds 30 lotte ontvang. Peter Jolie maak verskoning vir die byeenkoms omdat hy in Nederland toer. Dit word vasgestel dat die verkoper die kommissie van 10% sal betaal. Die Voorsitter onderneem om die lys op te stel en David Wolpe bied aan om as veilingmeester op te tree.

f. Die lede word herinner aan ons klubaand van 1 Okt 2013. Die instelling van kompetisies en die toekenning van die bekers word die aand bespreek en gefinaliseer.

g. Die Voorsitter maak weereens JOMAPEX 2013 bekend. Hy het sy Vierde Vaste reeks uitstalling reeds ingeskryf. Hy nooi die ander lede om ook hul uitstallings in te skryf, veral omdat daar ʼn versoek ontvang is vir meer inskrywings. Die sluitingsdatum vir inskrywings is tot 31 Jul 2013 uitgestel.

h. Die Voorsitter bevestig dat Nasionale Seëldag by die Soneike Poskantoor gehou sal word. Die Klub sal 100 spesiale koeverte vanaf Federasie aanvra op die grondslag dat onverkoopte koeverte teruggestuur sal word. Ons moet ook vasstel of daar ʼn spesiale aanplakbiljet beskikbaar gaan wees.

i. Daar is nou vordering vir ons deelname aan die Interklub in Sep 2013, waar ons klub as gasheer optree. David Wolpe sal ʼn drie-raam uitstalling, Siv Borgin ʼn twee-raam uitstalling en Gunter Wossler ʼn een-raam uitstalling inskryf. Rame sal om 17:00 opgerig word, en lede word versoek om reeds daardie tyd beskikbaar te wees om te help.

j. Die Voorsitter herinner die lede aan die Uitstalling Werkswinkel op 8 Jun 2013 by die Bellville biblioteek. Dit begin om 08:45 vir 09:15 en kos R100 per persoon. Lede Leon Smith, Henk Geertsema, Hugh Mulder, David Wolpe, Robert Harm en Ida Potgieter is ingeskryf, en Laurette van Tonder oorweeg nog om dit by te woon.

The next agenda item is the regular “Show, Tell and Ask”, as well as Alphabet letter Q. Dennis shows us the “golden” RSA stamps of 1971, as well as a Protea cover. Günter shows us Promotion on the selvage of the 4c and 15 c Sheep stamps of 1972. Ida Potgieter shows Paasseëls she received from Connie Liebenberg and tells that the issue started in 1944 to finance charity when a donation of £10 000. Whether stamps or labels, they are collectable. Hugh Mulder shows us Postmarks and datemarks of the Rhodesia Post Office. Laurette van Tonder produces a number of pages in her Quest of the letter Q. Some examples are Quakers, Quarter, Questa paper, Qudrangular, Quadrennially, Quatruplet, Quinnennial, Queens, Quichote, Quadriga and Quotations. David Wolpe shows us Pigeonpost, Paper dated 10 Dec 1949, Postal bag used to carry mail between Cape Town and Somerset West in 1938, Post cards of Denmark, a Papua New Guinea specimen, Pink, Samoa stamps overprinted Provisional, Poland stamp material, stamps from Pakistan, imprints of Papua, Palestine stamp in three languages, Postage due, Plate flaws of the Netherlands, Presidential mail, Prime Minister mail and Parliamentary mail. Peter Jolie shows the cover in which he received his copy of the SA Philatelist, but the stamps have been destroyed by very heavy Postal marks. Leon Smith shows us a number of pages celebrating Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Padvinders-beweging. He found the research very interesting, and reports that the local Padvinders would like to borrow the exhibit. Na die kort verdaging kom Ida aan die beurt. Sy verduidelik dat sy baie bont versamel, bv Holland, België, Amerika, maar dat sy ’n groot voorliefde vir die vaste reekse het. Sy vertoon die Sesde vaste reeks en die nuut getekende reeks wat sy as die beste vaste reeks ooit beskou. Sy spandeer so goed as 80% van die dag aan haar seëls, en help ook graag ander met hulle uitstallings. Die Sesde vaste reeks of Dierereeks hert baie variasies, en die 1c en 2c is op twee verskillende soorte papier gedruk. Dit is ook die eerste reeks wat weer van boekieseëls gebruik maak. Die reeks het ook seëls wat van die SA eilande herdenk. Sy wys ook ’n plakker met die woord indicium, wat blykbaar versteekte prente op die seëls het om die verskillende jaaruitgifte ui te ken. Die woordeboeke gee die betekenis as: an indication, sign or token, specifically the stamp on mail indicating paid postage. (Verwys na die Free Dictionary). Nog ‘n definisie is: a postal marking used rather than a stamp or regular cancellation on each item in a large shipment of prepaid mail, a printed message or instruction, especially one stamped on a package. (Verwys na Dictionary Boss). Die Voorsitter spreek sy waardering uit vir wat Ida gewys het, en vra Dennis Horn om namens die Klub dankie te sê. Dennis lê veral klem op die plesier wat Ida en Laurette uit hulle seëls kry, en dat hulle bereid is om dit met ons te deel. Hy meen ook dat dit ’n goeie belegging in standaard posgeld is.

Die byeenkoms verdaag om 21:45. FACTS AND FEATS: THE POSTAL SERVICES The first international organisation to issue its own stamps was the League of Nations. In 1922 it used Swiss

stamps overprinted SOCIETé DES NATIONS from their Geneva Headquarters. The Swiss subsequently overprinted stamps for use by the International Labour Office (1923), the International Education Office (1944), the World Health Organisation (1948), the International Refugees Organisation (1950), the World Meteorological Organisation (1956), the Universal Postal Union (1957), and the International Telecommunications Union (1958). Distinctive stamps for the Geneva office were issued via the Swiss PTT

from 1950 until; 1969. Distinctive stamps from the New York office have been issued since 1951, and from the Vienna office since 1979. The Netherlands issues stamps for the exclusive use of the Hague Court of Justice since 1934, France for the European Council in Strasbourg since 1958 and UNESCO since 1961. The only country to have had a dual system of stamps issued by two administrations in identical designs, but

different languages, was the New Hebrides, under the terms of the Anglo-French Condominium established in 1906. The first stamps used in 1908 were Fijian stamps overprinted in English and stamps of New Caledonia overprinted in French. From 1911 until 1980 every stamp

issued by the British Postal Administration (except the Coronation commemorative of 1953) were matched by stamps issued by the French. Although identical in design the inscriptions and positioning of the English and French emblems differed. The practice continued with the early of Vanuatu, the independent New Hebrides, but since 1981 they are inscribed in English and French. The only country with two entirely separate postal administrations is Andorra, ruled jointly by France and Spain since 1288 (or more correctly, by the Count of Foix and the Bishop of Urgel respectively). Today it has two titular

Heads of State – the President of the French Republic and the Bishop of Urgel. French and Spanish stamps are believed to have first been used in Andorra in 1877. The UPU assigned responsibility for Andorra’s external mail to Spain, but France arranged a courier service across the Pyrenees from Andorra between 1877 and 1931. The Spanish Post Office was established in Andorra la Vieja on 1 Jan 1928, issuing distinctive stamps from Mar 1929 (values expressed in pesetas). A French Post Office was

established in Andorra la Vella (same place) on 16 Jun 1931, issuing its own distinctive stamps (values in francs). This situation continues, although is limited to external mail. The only countries to grant their citizens free postage have been Andorra and Greenland. All internal mail in Andorra is transmitted through the post free of charge. Before all mail within Greenland and between Greenland and Denmark were sent free of charge. Only parcels required to be prepaid, and Greenland issued parcel stamps between 1905 and 1938. The vast majority of these stamps were cancelled on arrival in Copenhagen, and examples with Greenland postmarks are worth considerably more. Stamps with numeral cancellations were, in fact, used as savings stamps. Facts and feats come from: Mackay, James, The Guinness book of Stamps, Guinness Publishing Ltd, Enfield, 1988 NUWE KLEURE VIR MACHINS Die Machins word reeds sedert 1967 deur die Royal Mail uitgegee. Dit is egter by verre nie die langslopende vaste reeks nie, ʼn eer wat die Noorse Poshoring seëls wat reeds meer as ʼn eeu gelede vir die eerste keer die lig gesien het. Om dieselfde reeks vir solank uit te gee het ʼn posadministrasie wel iets meer nodig as net die ontwerp. Een van die fasette wat Royal Mail gehelp het was desimalisering in 1972. Dieselfde seëls kon uitgereik word, maar die 1d seël het ʼn 1p seël geword. Van die begin van die sewentiger jare het inflasie ook ʼn rol begin speel, en was op gereelde grondslag Machins met ʼn hoër waarde uitgegee. Die sekuriteitsperforasie het ook gehelp om dieselfde seëls verskillende seëls te maak. Maar die belangrikste verandering was klaarblyklik deur kleur te weeg gebring. Dit het dan ook byna ʼn jaarlikse instelling geword dat kleure verander is. In 2013 was dit ʼn kleurverandering vir die mees gebruikte seël in die vaste reeks, die Eerste Klas sonder waarde aangedui (die NVI – Non Value Indicator). Dit was die besondere se seël se sewende kleurverandering sedert 1989, en elke kleurverandering was om ʼn besondere rede gedoen. Die eerste NVI was in swart gedruk omdat die 150 jarige herdenking van die Penny Black in 1990 gevier sou word. Omdat swart nie ʼn kleur is wat ʼn posmerk goed wys nie, was dit slegs tydelik van aard. Reeds in 1990 het die NVI se kleur na ʼn skakering van rooi-oranje (met die naam “flame”) verander. Dit was een van die 30 kleure wat Jeffrey Matthews in die 1980’s vir die vaste reeks ontwerp het, en wat tussen 1988 en 1993 deur Royal Mail gebruik is. Die rede vir die rooi het te doen met die UPU se aanbeveling dat ledelande rooi as die kleur vir seëls gebruik wat die primêre tarief vir binnelandse pos is. Tussen April en November 1997 is die kleur van die seël na goud verander ter ere van Koningin Elizabeth se Goue (50) huweliksherdenking. Teen die einde van die betrokke jaar het die rooi-oranje kleur weer verskyn, en is dit gebruik tot 2002 toe goud sy terugkeer gemaak het. Hierdie keer was dit ter ere van die Koningin se Goue herdenking van haar troonbestyging. Die Royal Mail het aangekondig dat hierdie kleur behou sou word. Drukkers vind dit egter moeilik om met metaal-gebaseerde ink te werk, en die verskil is duidelik sigbaar tussen uitgawes van 1997 en 2002. Eers in 2012 is die kleur weer gewysig, en weer ter ere vir hulle Koningin. Die kleur het verander na diamant-blou (ʼn skakering van ligblou) ter ere van die Koningin se Diamant (60) herdenking van haar troonbestyging. Die jaar 2013 sien ʼn verdere kleurverandering, en hierdie keer na ʼn skakering van rooi (genoem “Royal Mail Red”). Hierdie seël het die nou normale sekuriteit ingebou (in gebruik sedert 2009), nl. die elliptiese tanding, die u-vormige spleet in die onderste hoeke van die seël en onoplosbare gom (om afweking en hergebruik te voorkom) en die nou standaard golwende ROYAL MAIL gedruk in wisselkleurige ink. THE DEATH CENTENARY OF EDWARD STANLEY GIBBONS (continued from June 2013). Stanley Gibbons himself never ran a stamp shop per sé. In 1891 Charles Philips opened a stamp shop in 435 Strand, which moved to 391 Strand and would be the home of the most famous stamp shop in the world for the next 90 years. It moved to 399 Strand in the early 1980s. Stanley’s first wife Matilda already passed away in 1877, and he married Margaret Casey in 1887. She had been resident with him at Gower Street

since 1881 at the age of 23. The couple moved to Twickenham (eventually in Cambridge Park) in 1891, and in the census of that year he described himself as Retired Publisher and his wife. Also living with them was his nephew, a “visitor” (probably a lodger), a cook and a housemaid. It was a well-to-do neighbourhood shared by at least three clergymen and a colonel. The Gibbons lived in the “villa” until 1911, and photographs are available showing Stanley, his wife and friends enjoying garden parties. The house was eventually demolished in 1960 to make way for new housing. In the Cambridge Gardens nearby Stanley Gibbons Ltd in 1976 planted some 300 bushes of the Stanley Gibbons rose. Pin roulette (known in French as percé en pointes) is a form of roulette consisting of a series of holes pricked in the paper. Some Mexican stamps are known with a roulette produced by square pins. Most examples of pin roulette are produced by a sewing machine in times of emergency. This form of roulette is one of five different types of roulette. The others are line roulette (percé de lignes) (used for the SA’s Bantam stamps), percé en arc (using small half circles), serrate roulette (percé en scie) and serpentine roulette (percé en serpentin).

Plagiarism (plagiarisme) Plagiarism in a philatelic context is artistic theft of the forms of designs originating in one country being used by another country, showing only minor modifications such as inscriptions and denominations. A good example in 1910 is shown to the right, and others include the 1856 stamps of Corrientes, based on the French Ceres example of 1849, the 1898 Uruguayan stamps based on the Newfoundland’s 3 c stamp of 1890, and the German local posts of the late 19th century. The worst form of plagiarism was the Lubeck 3 pf of 1888, which was a blatant copy of the 13c stamp of Newfoundland of 1865. Plate (plaat) The plate is the flat piece of engraved steel or copper, or lithographed stone, or forme or stereotype from which stamps are printed. A plate is generally made by transferring the design of an original die several times, so that a number of identical designs may be printed in one operation. Plate flaw (plaatfout)

A plate flaw is a blemish on a stamp caused by damage to a printing plate. Good examples may be found on stamps of Queensland. The 2d Daniel O’Connell stamp of Ireland (1929) exhibits the famous Screwdriver flaw on the 12th stamp of the 15th row, caused by a workman dropping a screwdriver on to the plate. The damage was repaired but shows as a thickening of lines in the affected part. Flaws on the British Wilding definitives, such as the numeral on the 2d and the Butterfly flaw, may be found before and after repair, the latter being known as a retouch.

Plate number (plaatnommer) Most of the stamp printers in the world assign a number or numbers to every plate required to print stamps. In some cases a letter suffix was used as well. The number with or without a letter suffix is usually inscribed on the sheet margins to denote the plate from which the stamp was printed. Some plates are divided into two or more panes and the latter are usually denoted by the suffix letters. Many British stamps from 1858 to 1880 bore the plate numbers within the framework of the stamps themselves, as well as in the sheet margins. The collection of blocks of stamps with selvage attached showing the plate numbers was once a very popular philatelic sideline. The plate number also assisted collectors who liked to reconstruct full sheets. Plate proof (plaatproef) A plate proof is an impression removed by the plate maker or printer from the plate, lithographic stone or etched cylinder prior to printing. This is done to ensure that there are no flaws or errors. A careful examination of the proof will reveal whether any retouching, re-engraving or other corrections are necessary. Pneumatic post (buisposseël of lugdrukpospypseël) The idea of shooting mail through tubes using air pressure was developed during the mid-1880s. In 1863 a service

was started in London to bypass traffic congestion as a special delivery mail. Services were also available in Berlin, Marseilles, Paris and Vienna. In Italy pneumatic mail services operated in Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Genoa. Special stamps were issued for the Italian services beginning in 1913, and they were inscribed Posta Pneumatica.

Plebiscite stamps (volkstemmingseël) In the aftermath of WW1 the political map of Europe changed drastically, and populations found themselves to be living in another country. In highly contested areas and with the principle of self-determination, plebiscites were held to allow populations to decide in which countries they wanted to live. These took time to arrange plebiscite stamps were issued in contested areas such as Allenstein, Carinthia, Eastern and Upper Silesia, Marienwerder, Memel, the Saar, Schleswig and Holstein. An almost equal poll in Upper Silesia resulted in the territory divided between Germany and Poland. Plug (inlas) A plug literally refers to a part of the printing plate plugged into the main design. A good example is provided by the early stamps of Haïti which were all produced from the same plate, the various figures of value being plugged in as required. A similar technique is sometimes used to repair damaged plates. The term is also used by collectors to denote the loose type (more correctly “slugs”) used in date-stamps. Poached egg (toetsseël)

Poached egg is the collectors’ nickname for a green testing label (because of its appearance) used by the British Post Office in the early 1930s to check the efficiency of vending machines. Examples came into the possession of the public in 1936/7 in mysterious circumstances, and there are even examples known to have been used postally without detection and surcharge, although such usage was never sanctioned officially. The British Post office inscribed further examples later for test purposes only, a practice also followed by the US Post Office.

Polyvinyl alcohol gum (poliviniel gom) Polyvinyl alcohol gum, better known by its abbreviation PVA, is an adhesive substance which is virtually invisible and non-curling, and has been employed on many stamps and labels since the late 1960s. It was introduced by Harrison & Sons on British stamps in 1968. It is a synthetic gum and invisible, causing producers to introduce colouring agents to show that the stamps are gummed. The greatest advantage was that it was less prone for sheets to stick together in conditions of heat and humidity. De la Rue made the same gum but called it polyvinyl hydroxyl (PVOH). In 1973 dextrin was added to the mix and was then called PVAD. Adding a bluish green colouring agent helped to distinguish these stamps from the earlier PVA gummed stamps. Porous paper (poreuse papier) Porous paper is a very soft, absorbent paper, usually unglazed. Porte de mar

Porte de mar is a Spanish term meaning “carries by sea”. This was denoted on Mexican stamps of the period 1875-79 for use on seaborne European mail to indicate the fees to be paid to the owners of the British and French mail ships employed on this service. These stamps were withdrawn from use when Mexico joined the Universal Postal Union.

Post Office forms with stamps printed on These are a type of postal stationary in which fees are denoted by means of stamps embossed or impressed on forms. This applies not only to many issues of telegram forms, but also to vaccination certificates, and the earliest certificates of posting for unregistered packets.
