Prize-winners’ concerts Prizes for Visual Arts & Design will be awarded at the opening of the art exhibition on Tuesday, 23 May 2017 at PJ Olivier Art Centre. Drama prizes will be awarded on Friday, 9 June 2017 at Eikestad Primary School Hall. The prize-winners’ concerts for Music will take place on Sunday, 11 June 2017 in the Endler Hall of the US Conservatory, Neethling Street, Stellenbosch:

General information and rules 1. The closing date for entries is Friday, 17 February 2017. Late entries and corrections or changes
to names and/or categories will be accepted until Sunday, 19 February 2017. 2. Entry forms will be available on the website as of 23 January 2017. Only the 2017 electronic
entry forms may be used. No entry form on paper will be accepted. All questions with regard to the new electronic entry system must be addressed via e-mail to [email protected].
3. Only electronic or bank payments will be accepted. No cash or cheques will be accepted. The deposit slip or proof of payment must accompany the entry. Use the reference number which the online entry system issues as reference when making payment.
4. Please read the information for the section carefully and make sure that participants are registered correctly. See number 7.
5. Participants’ names and surnames must be spelled accurately to ensure that they are printed correctly on the certificates.
6. Each section’s timetable with information regarding adjudication times, venues, participant numbers, etc. will be published on the website. Each teacher/coach must verify their information.
7. Age means the age of the participant as on 1 January 2017, regardless of the grade of the participant.
8. No person may enter for the same category more than once. 9. A specific piece, prescribed or own choice, may not be presented in more than one category. 10. No candidate may present a piece for which he/she has previously received a prize from the
Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd. 11. Timing (that includes set-up) must be as accurate as possible. If the timing is not on the entry
form, 4 (four) minutes per item are allowed, unless stated otherwise. Exceeding the time limit will be penalised.
12. No provision can be made for a candidate to practise beforehand in the relevant venue. Exceptions are made for organ candidates. No warm-up rooms are available, except for choirs and orchestras.
13. Participants must provide their own requisites, music stands and instruments, except for organ and piano candidates. Chairs are provided.
14. Management reserves the right, without prior notice, to change dates, venues and/or adjudicators.
15. Entrance fees for non-participants are charged at the Endler Hall. Voluntary donations may be made at the other venues.
16. Prize winners and invitations for participation in prize-winners concerts will be published on the website after the completion of the Kunswedstryd.
17. Participation in the prize-winners’ concerts is determined by the highest percentages (as awarded by the adjudicators) in the various sections. The management of the Kunswedstryd aims to compile a balanced programme.
18. Participants who were invited to participate in the prize-winners’ concert and who are absent without an excuse, lose their prizes. Suitable concert dress is required.
19. All the participants and their school/institution/private teacher should abide by the rules of the Kunswedstryd.

Adjudication 1. The adjudication of all categories will take place during April and May 2017. 2. Information regarding the place and date appears on the calendar and at each section on the
webpage. 3. Only in exceptional cases will participants be adjudicated outside their categories. 4. The adjudicator’s decision is final. 5. No communication with the adjudicator(s) will be allowed. 6. If there is interference with the adjudicating process, a participant may be disqualified. 7. No recordings may be made of the adjudicators’ feed back. 8. Copies of the specific piece(s) presented, must be handed to the adjudicator before the
performance. The adjudicator may write comments on these copies. Copies are destroyed directly after the performance. The Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd does not condone the unlawful copying of sheet music or any other published material.
Prizes 1. In addition to the trophies, medals or money prizes that are presented to special achievements
in certain categories of each section, certificates are presented to each participant as follow:
90% and higher Cum laude 85% - 89% Gold Plus A+ 80% - 84% Gold A 75% - 79% Silver Plus B+ 70% - 74% Silver B 60% - 69% Certificate of Participation
2. A list of trophies, medals or money prizes is available at each section. 3. Only participants that took part in two or more categories will be considered for trophies or
prizes. 4. Trophies remain the property of the Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd. 5. Trophies will be returned directly after the prize-giving function. Prize-winners will receive a
medal which they can take home. 6. The awarding of prizes is decided solely by the Kunswedstryd Committee in consultation with
the adjudicators. No enquiries in this respect will be accepted. 7. Trophies do not have to be awarded. 8. Engraving on the trophies will be done by the Kunswedstryd Committee.

1. No participant will be adjudicated outside his or her category.
2. Only participants in two or more categories will be eligible for prizes.
3. Exceeding maximum duration will be penalised.
4. Singers must preferably be accompanied on the piano. No backing tracks, electronic instruments, microphones or sound amplification will be allowed.

General information What is the difference between Visual Art and Design? For the purposes of the Eisteddfod, a visual artwork can be seen as a unique creation by a person to express his/her experience of the world. This implies that only one totally unique artwork is created, for example a painting, drawing or sculpture.
Printmaking is also seen as a Visual Art because the original artwork on a printing plate is prepared as a unique work of art. From this printing plate a printed edition can be produced, where each individual copy is numbered. No two printed copies are identical as a result of the printing process, where the physical inking of the plate is done by hand and allows for interesting variations in tone and texture. The work is printed on special printing paper. We look here at etching, linocut, et cetera.
Design, as in Visual Art, also involves the creativity and artistic ideas of an artist, but here the emphasis of the work of art shifts to that of an aesthetically functional object or idea. There is usually more than one identical object. These are manufactured with a view to the commercial market. There can sometimes be confusion between ceramics and ceramic sculpture. In both cases clay is used as raw material and fired in a kiln. The only question one can ask is whether this is a Visual Artwork (a three dimensional sculpture portraying/expressing some idea or narrative) or whether it is a functional Designed Artwork (a three dimensional object which is actually, for example, a bowl from which you can drink, possibly one of a small set of six).
Textile Design sometimes involves printing, but the design is printed on fabric that immediately adds value to functional artwork. Textile Design is anything to do with textiles such as patchwork, potato printing, appliqué, fabric painting, weaving, felting, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, et cetera.
Although there is a functional element in design, it should be borne in mind that each designer will have his/her unique distinctive design: something new and exciting and not a copy of something that already exists, for example, a cup can have many different forms, a knitted object can be texturally very interesting if you explore different alternative materials with which to knit. Thus, it is not the actual object, but the design of it or on it that determines its success. Section information (please also refer to general information and rules):
1. Participant’s age as on 1 January 2017 and not the age at which the artwork was created. 2. Candidates may participate in more than one category. 3. Only one entry per participant per category will be allowed.

4. Only five entries per school/institution per age category will be allowed. 5. Artwork must be the candidate’s own work. 6. Artwork must depict the theme. 7. Any medium can be used. 8. Artwork may not be older than 9 months. 9. Two dimensional artworks must not be mounted. 10. Three dimensional artworks (Sculpture and Ceramics) must be able to stand independently. 11. Maximum size of two dimensional artworks is A1 format (841 x 594mm). 12. Maximum size of three dimensional artworks is 1m in height. 13. Description form and declaration of authenticity must be completed and signed by participant
and attached to the back of the artwork. 14. The Stellenbosch Kunswedstryd may not be held responsible for any damage to the artwork as
